The component is within one of the spacecraft\u2019s eight power and data units, or PDUs. The PDUs are the \u201cmain power\/data boxes,\u201d for Orion according to the email, responsible for activating key systems that Orion needs during flight.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are fully committed to seeing Orion launch next year on its historic Artemis I mission to the Moon,\u201d a Lockheed Martin representative told <em>The Verge<\/em>. Lockheed Martin adds that the power and data unit is \u201cfully functional\u201d without the failed channel, but the report outlines the difficulty of actually fixing the failed power component. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>To get to the PDU, Lockheed Martin could remove the Orion crew capsule from its service module, but it\u2019s a lengthy process that could take up to a year. As many as nine months would be needed to take the vehicle apart and put it back together again, in addition to<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>three months for subsequent testing, according to the presentation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA published its own summary of Orion\u2019s issue shortly after <em>The Verge <\/em>broke the story:<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-7429',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>While powering up the spacecraft to prepare for the pressurization of the crew module uprighting system, which ensures the capsule is oriented upward after splashdown, engineers identified an issue with a redundant channel in a power and data unit (PDU) on Orion\u2019s crew module adapter. The team is continuing with other closeout activities while troubleshooting the issue, including installation of temporary covers to ensure components are protected during ground processing and fit checks for bonded tile on the crew module side hatch.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency has heavily highlighted progress toward finalizing Orion for flight including installation of the forward bay cover used to protect the spacecraft when re-entering Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for NASA\u2019s rocket that will send Orion to the Moon, Stennis Space Center in South Mississippi is on track to complete final testing of Space Launch System\u2019s core stage this month. <\/p>\n<p><ins data-ad-format=\"auto\" class=\"adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506057612223327\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\" style=\"display: block;
