The funding is part of the space agency\u2019s Tipping Point initiative which seeks public-private partnerships to foster space commerce and technology at a reduced cost to the government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX is among the highest paid recipients selected by NASA\u2019s Tipping Point solicitation for a future demonstration of transferring rocket fuel in space using Starship.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-5197\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NASA &amp; Starship<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA is investing $53.2 million in SpaceX to complete a propellant transfer demonstration in space. If milestones that are to be determined are met on schedule, NASA describes the upcoming task as this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Large-scale flight demonstration to transfer 10 metric tons of cryogenic propellant, specifically liquid oxygen, between tanks on a Starship vehicle.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX is currently developing the next-generation space system with ambitions for future Mars missions. <\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-5197',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"post-youtube-video-1\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C8JyvzU0CXU?version=3&amp;rel=0&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent&amp;enablejsapi=1\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C8JyvzU0CXU?version=3&amp;rel=0&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent&amp;enablejsapi=1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX cites Starship\u2019s design for \u201crapid reusability\u201d as critical in making the launch system fit for the job of helping astronauts and supplies reach the Moon and Mars in future missions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA is similarly investing in SpaceX Starship on a proposal to develop a modern human landing system for Artemis missions to the Moon.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lockheed &amp; ULA<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin and United Launch Alliance will score the bulk of the Tipping Point funding with $89.7 million and $86.2 million to be awarded, respectively. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin is tasked with handling \u201cliquid hydrogen \u2013 the most challenging of the cryogenic propellants \u2013 to test more than a dozen cryogenic fluid management technologies\u201d that can be used with future space hardware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">United Launch Alliance will use its upcoming Vulcan Centaur upper stage hardware:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Demonstration of a smart propulsion cryogenic system, using liquid oxygen and hydrogen, on a Vulcan Centaur upper stage.
