A white and gray two-piece flight suit is worn by astronauts who travel to space in a SpaceX vehicle. It\u2019s a bold departure from the orange and blue flight suits traditionally worn by NASA astronauts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a new video published by SpaceX, Space Suits and Crew Equipment Manager Chris Trigg describes how the flight suits are also extensions of the Crew Dragon spacecraft by design.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-3391\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trigg describes the sleek space suits as a \u201csuit-seat system\u201d because of how the flight suits communicate with the ship when an astronaut is seated and connected. A single port engages the suit with the ship to enable communication, cooling, and even pressurization.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-3391',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria Sundeen, Lead Space Suit Specialist at SpaceX, adds that each SpaceX space suit is customized made for each crew member who is assigned to a SpaceX crewed mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key aspects of SpaceX\u2019s suit include both comfort and security, Trigg says, with features like hearing protection and flame resistance..<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4LMwKwcMdIg?version=3&amp;rel=0&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These qualities serve to protect the crew if the Dragon capsule were to depressurize in space during flight \u2014 something no astronaut wants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX\u2019s futuristic space suit also includes the microphone-equipped custom helmet and touch-screen compatible gloves to work with the modern interface of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX sent NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station on May 30. Both astronauts wore the \u201cseat-suit system\u201d while leaving the Earth\u2019s atmosphere. The astronaut duo is set to return from their extended mission as soon as this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behnken and Hurley are part of SpaceX\u2019s Demo-2 mission to certify the company\u2019s Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule for human spaceflight.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, SpaceX will send NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins, and Shannon Walker and JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi to the space station for a six-month mission. Following final data analysis from the so-called Demo-2 crewed flight test mission with Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, SpaceX\u2019s upcoming Crew-1 mission will be its first operational flight. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA is contracting astronaut flights to low Earth orbit out to SpaceX and later Boeing through its Commercial Crew program. The effort allows NASA to not rely on million dollar seats on Russian rockets for sending crew to the ISS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, NASA is setting its sights on the Moon. Under the Artemis program, NASA plans to send the first woman and next man to the Moon as soon as 2024.
