The Solar Orbiter probe, which was sent into space on February 10, 2020, captured phenomena unprecedented in the Sun. The photos revealed \u201comnipresent miniature solar flames\u201d near the surface of the star at the center of our solar system.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-2991\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Solar Orbiter is equipped with six telescopes that capture images of the Sun, in addition to four instruments that monitor the surroundings of the spacecraft. With these data, scientists are looking to understand more details on how solar winds are generated and how the charged particles from the Sun influences the Solar System.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to ESA\u2019s Solar Orbiter Project Scientist, Daniel M\u00fcller, the results of the studies with Solar Orbiter are exciting and the team expects to learn more about phenomena that weren\u2019t observable in detail before.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>We didn\u2019t really expect such great results right from the start. We can also see how our ten scientific instruments complement each other, providing a holistic picture of the Sun and the surrounding environment.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photos were taken about 77 million kilometers away from the star, which is half the distance between the Sun and Earth. This is the first time a spacecraft has been able to capture images of the Sun\u2019s surface at such distance.<\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-2991',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists still can\u2019t affirm whether the campfires photographed are related to the large flares or if they have \u201cdifferent mechanisms.\u201d However, they believe that these small flares have potential to change the temperature of the outermost layer of the Sun in a phenomenon known as \u201ccoronal heating.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Its temperature is more than a million degrees Celsius, which is orders of magnitude hotter than the surface of the Sun, a \u2018cool\u2019 5500 \u00b0C. After many decades of studies, the physical mechanisms that heat the corona are still not fully understood, but identifying them is considered the \u2018holy grail\u2019 of solar physics.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image wp-block-image--obfuscated\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"Site default logo image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solar Orbiter is expected to bring even more details about the solar atmosphere in the future.
