Returning Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley home safely in a few months is top priority for the team working for NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Program.<\/p>\n<p>For the rest of SpaceX, CEO Elon Musk wants as many hands on deck working on the next big rocket: Starship.&nbsp;CNBC first reported on a companywide email Musk fired off on Saturday night. In the memo, the SpaceX founder pushed employees to \u201cdramatically and immediately\u201d speed up Starship development.<\/p>\n<p>The Starship system is SpaceX\u2019s next-generation rocket and spacecraft designed to be a \u201cfully reusable transportation system.\u201d Starship will send crew and cargo to Earth orbit and the Moon. SpaceX also intends for Starship reach Mars and other planets.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-2113\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t<span class=\"outbrain-ad-label\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<script type=\"text\/plain\">\n\t\t\twindow.adSlotsConfig = window.adSlotsConfig || [];<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tadSlotsConfig.push( {\n\t\t\t\tslotID: '\/1049447\/Outbrain',\n\t\t\t\tslotName: 'div-gpt-ad-outbrain-ad-2113',\n\t\t\t\tsizes: [300, 250],\n\t\t\t\tslotPosition: 'mid_article'\n\t\t\t} );\n\t\t<\/script><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SpaceX currently flies Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets with Dragon spacecrafts<\/li>\n<li>Starship will carry up to 100 passengers compared to four on Crew Dragon<\/li>\n<li>Starship is still in development with prototype versions tested regularly in Boca Chica, Texas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rocket goes boom<\/h2>\n<p>One day before flying humans onboard the Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon system for the first crewed flight test, SpaceX unexpectedly blew up a development prototype version of Starship called SN4 during a static fire test.<\/p>\n<p>The fiery explosion occurred minutes after what appeared to be a successful static fire test proceeded by other successes for SN4.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7RPyDPpmDAk?version=3&amp;rel=0&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Test hardware catching on fire and exploding at evacuated test sites is part of rocket development. SpaceX has about 8,000 employees, most of whom are at the company\u2019s Los Angeles area headquarters or its facilities at Cape Canaveral, Florida, or near Austin, Texas. Although SpaceX has some land under lease in the Port of Los Angeles for Starship development, Musk\u2019s email implied that the company is seeking to incentivize employees to move to Texas from California and Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For those considering moving, we will always offer a dedicated SpaceX aircraft to shuttle people,\u2019 Musk wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>NASA and Starship<\/h2>\n<p>SpaceX has good reason to feel pressure over graduating Starship from a concept to a flight proven rocket and spacecraft sooner than later.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1186\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/2020\/06\/07\/spacex-starship-top-priority\/starship_moon_astronauts\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" data-orig-size=\"985,554\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"starship_moon_astronauts\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png?w=985\" data-url=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1186 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceexplored.com\/wp-content\/themes\/ninetofive\/dist\/images\/default-spaceexplored-related-guide.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"985\" height=\"554\"><\/p>\n<p>A version of the Starship system is one of three Human Landing System proposals chosen by NASA for future lunar missions under the Artemis Program.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX is receiving $135 million to develop a fleet of Starships that can be used by NASA, as <em>Space Explored<\/em> reported in April:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NASA says each Starship would have a distinct purpose from propellant storage in low Earth orbit to tanker Starships and human-rated Starships in lunar orbit<\/li>\n<li>SpaceX will launch Starship from its Super Heavy rocket booster from Earth<\/li>\n<li>SpaceX has also been selected by NASA for missions to send cargo to Gateway, a lunar orbiting docking station that will be deployed in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Starship system will first have to complete an orbital flight. When might we expect the first flight of Starship?
