The Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) follows a previous one on Dec. 2 that installed the third iROSA.<\/p>\n<p>The second EVA of the pair was scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 21, but was postponed at the last minute when controllers determined that a piece of Russian rocket debris would pass dangerously close to the ISS, necessitating a Predetermined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM) to move the station safely out of the way and delaying the spacewalk by 24 hours. The PDAM occurred at 13:42 UTC, Dec. 21, using the Progress MS-20 spacecraft\u2019s engines.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Installation of the new arrays marks a continued effort to install at least six iROSAs onto the space station as part of a power augmentation program that began in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The first spacewalk on Dec. 2&nbsp;primarily focused on the installation of an iROSA to the 3A power channel on the starboard truss of the ISS.<\/p>\n<p>However, an unrelated event on Nov. 23 on the 1B electrical channel added an element to this EVA.<\/p>\n<p>According to NASA, on Nov. 23, \u201cSequential Shunt Unit (SSU) 1B experienced two power on resets (POR) and then tripped off. During unfolding after attachment, clearances became an issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we made some minor modifications to the design to elongate a slot that enables the bracket that\u2019s on the mounting structure to have clearance so that we don\u2019t have that interference anymore,\u201d added Mickle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another item noticed during the first two iROSA installations that resulted in a modification to the third and fourth arrays related to their sunshades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother thing that we noticed when we unfurled the solar arrays was that there was some buckling and shuttling of the sunshades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75812\" class=\"wp-image-75812 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IROSA-vs-original-array-325x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IROSA-vs-original-array-325x350.jpg 325w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IROSA-vs-original-array.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-75812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angle showing how the new IROSAs will be deployed over the current arrays. (Credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p>The sunshades shield the original arrays\u2019 longeron masts from the Sun to stop them from undergoing thermal and structural loading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a little bit of buckling in that,\u201d noted Mickle, \u201cso we made a minor modification to the design. We\u2019re using a thinner cable that the sunshades are deployed on, and we\u2019ve tested that on the ground and it looks great. And then we also added an additional hinge to prevent some of the buckling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, a third lesson learned from the first two iROSAs was related to crew handling during the orbital installation process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter [the iROSAs] are removed from the flight support equipment and the crewmember is translating them over to the space station structure to be attached, the handrail locations made it a little bit awkward for the length of time they had to hold on to it,\u201d related Mickle.<\/p>\n<p>An operation change has now been made for the crew, enabling them to use a multi-use tether to attach to handrails to make it more comfortable during the translation process.<\/p>\n<p>Should additional items of interest be seen during the installation of the third and fourth iROSAs, there would be time to make slight alterations to operational procedures and potentially to the arrays themselves given that the next set is not scheduled to launch until June 2023 on the SpaceX CRS-28 mission.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Impact Story: Roll-Out Solar Arrays\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dPKxPKx8VEw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid1\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-22=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While the iROSAs are slated to be launched shortly before their installation, as was the case with the first two sets of arrays and is the plan for the third, there is a way to store the iROSAs outside the ISS if needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things we look at is the thermal environment in which they would be stowed,\u201d noted Mickle. \u201cWe want to make sure that \u2014 because the design of the iROSAs basically is a rolled up array that has potential energy stored in a boom which allows the iROSAs to be deployed without any type of motor \u2014 we want to make sure that that potential energy is still capable for the full deployment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To do that, the arrays \u2014 if they needed to be stored before installation \u2014 would be stored in a thermally benign area outside the station.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Lead image: The first two iROSA arrays seen during Crew-2 flyaround on Nov. 8, 2021.
