It was reviewed and approved by the President’s Office Meeting of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on July 29, 2017.

2

History

The Institute of Electronics was founded in 1956 and is my country’s first comprehensive electronics and information science institute; the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth was established in 2012 on the basis of the original Remote Sensing Application Research Institute and Earth Observation Center. It is a research institution for remote sensing science and comprehensive application technology in my country; the Institute of Optoelectronics was established in 2003. It is a high-tech research unit with both overall management and overall technical functions in three main fields: optoelectronic engineering, aerospace and applied science and technology.

3

Talent team

As of December 2024, the Aerospace Institute has more than 4,500 employees, including 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and more than 100 national high-level talents. It hosts the School of Electronic, Electrical and Communication Engineering of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the School of Optoelectronics of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, with more than 1,900 graduate students.

4

Park distribution

The Aerospace Institute has more than 20 national and academy-level key laboratories and centers. Its headquarters is located in Beijing. It has three R&D bases in Suzhou, Jinan, and Guangzhou, as well as test sites in Miyun, Kashgar, Sanya, Lijiang, Mohe, Haiyang, Siziwang Banner, Yingkou, and Huailai.

At present, the Aerospace Institute has formed a scientific research structure and layout with the Beijing headquarters as the center, three R&D bases and several test sites.

5

Scientific research results

The Academy carries out original theoretical and scientific research in major fields such as core components of space electronics, advanced payload technology and systems, remote sensing and digital earth science, aerospace information processing and applications, aviation/near space observation platforms, and navigation technology, and has made breakthroughs in many core key technologies.

The Gaofen-3 ocean monitoring radar constellation SAR payload is managed by the Aerospace Microwave Remote Sensing System Department team of the Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology. The Gaofen-301 satellite was successfully launched on August 10, 2016. It is my country’s first C-band fully polarized SAR satellite.

6

commercial aerospace applications

The Nuwa constellation is the largest commercial radar remote sensing constellation in the country. As of May 2025, there are 12 satellites in orbit, all equipped with synthetic aperture radar developed by the scientific research team of the Aerospace Academy. At present, Nuwa Constellation has supported various event monitoring for more than 100 times, generated more than 500,000 scenes of standard image data, and its service scope covers the whole country. On December 4, 2024, my country’s first ultra-low orbit commercial SAR remote sensing satellite “Haishao-1” was successfully launched. Its main payload is the X-band multi-polarization SAR, which can achieve multi-polarization, high-resolution, and large-width microwave earth imaging observations. The development of the SAR payload is undertaken by the Qilu Aerospace Information Institute (Jinan Park of the Aerospace Institute).

7

Entering commercial aerospace

On May 7, 2024, the experimental satellite Neptune 01 of the commercial low-cost microwave remote sensing constellation “Neptune” was successfully launched. The satellite is China’s first parabolic commercial radar satellite that successfully performs on-orbit imaging. The high-performance SAR payload it carries is developed by the Aerospace Microwave Remote Sensing System Department of the Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology. As a strategic scientific and technological force in the field of my country’s aerospace information, the Aerospace Academy has given full play to its technological advantages and relied on its profound technological accumulation to deeply participate in the development of commercial aerospace, helping China’s commercial aerospace take a leading position in global competition.

As a strategic scientific and technological force in my country’s aerospace information field, the Aerospace Institute provides key technical support for multiple commercial satellite and constellation projects.
