Institute 812 is affiliated to the Eighth Institute of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, formerly known as Institute 509. In 2010, the Eighth Institute split the original 509 into Institute 509 (for details about Institute 509, please see our previous article: “Commercial Aerospace “National Team” – Institute 509 of the Eighth Institute of Aerospace Science and Technology”) and 812. The 812 Institute is an important research and development unit in the development of my country’s satellite industry and the largest spacecraft assembly and test (AIT) base in East China. <\/p>\n

Talent team<\/p>\n
812 currently has more than 650 employees, of which more than 50% have a master’s degree or above, more than 150 have senior professional titles, 2 are special technicians, and 4 enjoy special government allowances from the State Council. <\/p>\n

Main business<\/p>\n
The 812 Institute is mainly responsible for satellite assembly integration, spacecraft environmental test technology research and the development of related equipment and products. It has full-chain AIT business capabilities for various types of spacecraft, one-stop supporting capabilities for satellite electromechanical and thermal basic products, and advanced spacecraft development models and processes. It is the most professional commercial satellite production line and ground equipment supporting provider in China. <\/p>\n

Application cases<\/p>\n
The 812 Institute is a system-level integration and testing unit for multiple series of satellites represented by my country’s “Fengyun” series, “Practice” series, “Remote Sensing” series, “Tianwen-1” Mars orbiter, and “Xihe” solar monitoring satellites. Among them, the “Fengyun” series has launched 21 Fengyun meteorological satellites, and 9 are in orbit; the “Shijian” series has launched more than 40 satellites, mainly responsible for technical verification, scientific experiments, space exploration and other tasks. The latest satellite launched is Shijian 25, which was launched on January 7, 2025; and the “Remote Sensing” series has launched more than 160 satellites. <\/p>\n

AIT+ production line<\/p>\n
On March 30, 2023, four Hongtu-1 satellites of Group 01 were successfully launched. It took 812 47 days to complete the final assembly of the four SAR satellites, antenna and solar wing deployment tests, and large-scale experiments. In addition, 812 Institute has relied on its mature satellite manufacturing “one-stop” supporting service capabilities to build four commercial satellite production lines in three years, including Shandong Qilu Satellite International Innovation Center, Hong Kong Aerospace Satellite Intelligent Manufacturing Center, Hunan Zhuzhou Sederite Satellite Factory, Henan Tianzhang Satellite Factory and other four commercial satellite production line projects. <\/p>\n

Entering commercial aerospace<\/p>\n
In 2023, the 812 Institute will cooperate with nearly 20 commercial aerospace companies, undertake the AIT development tasks of more than 30 commercial satellites, and the supporting tasks of nearly 100 commercial satellite structures, thermal control, and cable network products, and enter commercial aerospace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
