The combined aircraft climbed to altitude before Unity was released at 11:15 EST (16:15 UTC).<\/p>\n<p>After release, Unity lit its engine but aborted one second into firing.&nbsp; The ship and pilots executed the proper procedures and brought Unity to a successful, unpowered descent and landing.&nbsp; All went smoothly and we are on track ahead of our flight window opening on Friday. pic.twitter.com\/lnXmgrmsNI<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Virgin Galactic (@virgingalactic) December 7, 2020<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While the internationally used definition for the boundary of space is 100 km, a marker known as the Karman line, the U.S. defines the boundary to space at 80 km.&nbsp; As the VSS Unity flies from the U.S. and under the U.S. flag and regulatory processes, its flights above 80 km count for spaceflight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unity\u2019s rigorous test campaign in California included four captive carry flights under VMS Eve (Unity\u2019s WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft) followed by seven glide flights from 2016 to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>On 5 April 2018, VSS Unity fired its engine for the first time, conducting a powered flight up to 25.7 kilometers in altitude. The flight was also the first time VSS Unity went supersonic, reaching a speed of Mach 1.87, or 1.87 times the speed of sound.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequent powered flights on 29 May and 26 July 2018 reached altitudes of 34.9 km and 52 km respectively, as well as increased speeds of Mach 1.9 and Mach 2.47.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth powered flight on 13 December 2018 accomplished the long-awaited goal of Virgin Galactic\u2019s first trip to space. VSS Unity reached an altitude of 82.7 km and a peak speed of Mach 2.9.<\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft\u2019s crew, pilot Mark Stucky and Space Shuttle veteran Frederick \u201cC.J.\u201d Sturckow, became the first people to launch above 80 km from the United States since the final Space Shuttle mission in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>VSS Unity made its second and most-recent spaceflight on 22 February 2019. The vehicle was flown by pilots David Mackay and Michael Masucci and reached an apogee of 89.9 km and a speed of Mach 3.04. (Credit: Jack Beyer for NSF\/L2)<\/p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic had long planned to transfer Unity from California to its operational location at Spaceport America in New Mexico. That move occurred on Thursday, 13 February 2020 \u2014 signaling the end of the primary test flight campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Virgin Galactic teams have conducted two piloted glide tests that reached 15.24 km and 15.54 km, respectively, on 1 May and 25 June 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s flight carried three payloads from NASA\u2019s Flight Opportunities Program.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before the mission, Mike Moses, a former Shuttle official and current President of Space Mission and Safety at Virgin Galactic, said: \u201cOne thing to note about this flight is that once we are in space, we will be flying slightly differently than how we plan to fly with our Future Astronauts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is because we\u2019ll have three NASA payloads in the cabin, flown through NASA\u2019s Flight Opportunities Program. Unlike our Future Astronauts, these payloads aren\u2019t on board for the view, so instead of stopping the vehicle pitch in the inverted position for the best views of Earth, we\u2019ll pitch the vehicle 270 degrees following boost to get to the entry attitude as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis maneuver will maximize time for the payloads to remain in data-collection mode. (Credit: Virgin Galactic)<\/p>\n<p>Another experiment was Collisions into Dust Experiment (COLLIDE) from the University of Central Florida, which first flew aboard the Space Shuttle and has since flown on New Shepard, SpaceShipTwo, and other sounding rockets.<\/p>\n<p>COLLIDE provides information on the behavior of dust and fine particles in response to human and robotic activities in space, something of great importance for future lunar and Martian activities.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the scientific goals, which NASA was eager to take advantage of and Virgin Galactic equally eager to abide, the flight was also to test upgrades to the VSS Unity itself.<\/p>\n<p>Since its last powered flight in California, Virgin Galactic has made upgrades to Unity, most notably with its horizontal stabilizers, known as H-Stabs, as well as flight control system command improvements in response to pilot inputs.<\/p>\n<p>These changes were tested prior to today, both on the ground and during the two glide tests the ship performed since arriving in New Mexico. (Credit: Virgin Galactic)<\/p>\n<p>With Virgin Galactic moving closer to commercial operations in New Mexico, the company continues to build additional SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo vehicles in Mojave. The Spaceship Company has now assembled all of the major structural elements of the next SpaceShipTwo spacecraft.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A series of major build milestones culminated in the \u201cWeight on Wheels,\u201d when the spacecraft deployed its landing gear and supported its own weight for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>This milestone was reached faster than with VSS Unity thanks to more efficient manufacturing and assembly processes as well as experience from building previous spacecraft. The newest vehicle, yet unnamed, is the third SpaceShipTwo built, after the ill-fated VSS Enterprise and the space-flown VSS Unity.<\/p>\n<p>The new spacecraft will now undergo final structural closeouts and the connection of its flight control systems. These steps are a precursor to integrated ground testing and eventual flight tests, to be conducted in Mojave.<\/p>\n<p>A third member of the fleet, and the fourth SpaceShipTwo, is also under construction.
