{"id":37828,"date":"2019-11-07T21:48:11","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T13:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/a-tale-of-two-cygnuses-ng-11-and-ng-12\/"},"modified":"2019-11-07T21:48:11","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T13:48:11","slug":"a-tale-of-two-cygnuses-ng-11-and-ng-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/a-tale-of-two-cygnuses-ng-11-and-ng-12\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tale of Two Cygnuses: NG-11 and NG-12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the main focus last weekend was on the successful launch of the Cygnus NG-12 mission with a fresh set of science experiments and supplies for the Expedition 61 crew of the International Space Station, Northrop Grumman was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to test a critical new capability for Cygnus.<\/p>\n<p>That new effort was the ability for two Cygnus spacecraft to fly in space at the same time \u2013 with the team able to properly command each spacecraft individually.<\/p>\n<p>This testing is crucial for Northrop Grumman\u2019s plan to offer Cygnus as a free-flying science platform for NASA, government, and commercial companies after its primary Station mission is complete.<\/p>\n<p>This effort was only possible because Northrop Grumman used their NG-11 Cygnus \u2013 launched 17 April 2019 \u2013 to test some of the long-duration Cygnus systems after that craft left the Station in August.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, NG-11 has spent the last three months free flying in Low Earth Orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, Cygnus vehicles depart the International Space Station, deploy a few CubeSats, and then re-enter Earth\u2019s atmosphere within a couple of weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60361\" class=\"wp-image-60361 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Cygnus_Night_Flyer_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5040\" height=\"2533\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-60361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cygnus in orbital free-flight. (Credit: Nathan Koga for NSF\/L2)<\/p>\n<p>For NG-11, the last three months have seen the craft test out the new Cygnus long-duration systems and equipment \u2013 most notably the Control Moment Gyroscopes, or CMGs.<\/p>\n<p>The new CMGs on Cygnus provide attitude adjustments and orientation changes of the craft without having to use the precious and limited onboard supply of fuel for the vehicle\u2019s thrusters and engine.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>NG-11 Mission UPDATES<\/li>\n<li>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle <\/li>\n<li>NG-12 Mission LIVE Updates<\/li>\n<li>NGIS Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 Antares\/Cygnus Special<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Frank DeMauro, Vice President and General Manager of Space Systems Division at Northrop Grumman, those CMG tests have gone extremely well.<\/p>\n<p>And that success laid the groundwork for the most crucial test that could only be performed once the NG-12 Cygnus was on the launch pad and in orbit: commanding two separate Cygnus spacecraft at the same time with the same control teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo control and monitor two Cygnus vehicles at the same time, we have never had the need to do that,\u201d said Mr. DeMauro in a one-on-one interview with NASASpaceflight a few days before the NG-12 Cygnus launch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we wanted to do it as efficiently and safely and effectively as possible.&nbsp; So we have the same Mission Ops team monitoring both vehicles. We have the telemetry from both spacecraft piped into our mission control center.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo any of the spacecraft operators can view the telemetry in their particular area by simply clicking a button to move between NG-11 and NG-12 telemetry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To make this operation as seamless as possible for the control teams, Northrop Grumman implemented a series of changes to their consoles to increase situational awareness of which Cygnus vehicle each operator is currently working with.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Antares launches Cygnus NG-12 to the Space Station\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dk8lNKVw-Xo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In terms of human-computer interfaces, each Cygnus is color coded.&nbsp; For example, if NG-11\u2019s telemetry is displayed against a blue background, NG-12\u2019s data would have a purple background \u2013 enabling controllers to instantly recognize which vehicle\u2019s data they are looking at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key with the software upgrades is that if we have a single controller and we have two vehicles that we\u2019re controlling, how do we make sure that the commands are going to the correct spacecraft?&nbsp; And then also how do we make sure that the controller, and not only the controller but all of the members of the team for monitoring the two spacecraft, are looking at the right telemetry for each particular spacecraft,\u201d noted Mr. DeMauro.<\/p>\n<p>This situational awareness is quite important because the console operators had to monitor both craft at the same time with a near-constantly stream of telemetry coming in from both NG-11 and NG-12.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did put safeguards in place so that we don\u2019t accidentally send the wrong command to the wrong spacecraft.&nbsp; And so all of that has been tested and simulated on the ground. All the rehearsals have taken place. So for us, it\u2019s an exciting capability to be able to demonstrate,\u201d said Mr. DeMauro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we are constantly recording both sets of telemetry so the team can downlink both sets and review it offline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an update to this effort provided to NASASpaceflight today, Northrop Grumman said, All testing has gone well in regards to both spacecraft in orbit at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"\" style=\"position: static; \u201cOnce we demonstrate the two Cygnus spacecraft flying at the same time, and as long as the team feels that we\u2019ve gathered enough data on our free-flying demonstration, then we\u2019ll start the process of planning for it to be brought in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t picked a firm date for that.&nbsp;
