{"id":37994,"date":"2019-06-24T18:30:56","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T10:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/spacex-completes-most-challenging-flight-with-falcon-heavys-stp-2-mission\/"},"modified":"2019-06-24T18:30:56","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T10:30:56","slug":"spacex-completes-most-challenging-flight-with-falcon-heavys-stp-2-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/spacex-completes-most-challenging-flight-with-falcon-heavys-stp-2-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX completes most-challenging flight with Falcon Heavy\u2019s STP-2 mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After years of payload preparation, SpaceX\u2019s Falcon Heavy rocket launched one of the company\u2019s most-challenging missions to date. &nbsp;Space Test Program 2 (STP-2), a U.S. Air Force contracted flight with 24 government and civilian testbed payloads, launch within at 4-hour launch window from LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The launch window opened at 23:30 EDT on Monday, 24 June (03:30 UTC on Tuesday 25 June), although the T-0 moved to 02:30 EDT \u2013 3 hours into the window. &nbsp;After liftoff, the Falcon Heavy\u2019s second stage spent roughly 3.5 hours performing 20 deployments of 24 satellites into various orbits and various orbital inclinations.<\/p>\n<p><b>Falcon Heavy: A unique mission<\/b><\/p>\n<p>STP-2 is a one-of-a-kind mission for SpaceX and the Falcon Heavy rocket. <\/p>\n<p>The triple-booster rocket \u2013 the world\u2019s most powerful currently-operational rocket \u2013 blasted off under 5.1 million lbf of thrust from Pad 39A in Florida and flew due east out over the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Launching a remarkably lightweight payload of just 3,700 kg, the Falcon Heavy \u2013 at a glance \u2013 seemed wildly overpowered for launching a mission of this class into orbit.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/L2-banner@2x.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4500\" height=\"2532\">However, part of the flight required the second stage to re-ignite three times to radically alter the vehicle\u2019s orbit for the various payload deployments.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>LIVE: Falcon Heavy\/STP-2<\/li>\n<li>SpaceX Missions Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 SpaceX Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Space Shuttle<path d=\"M7.59009 18.59L9.00009 20L17.0001 12L9.00009 4L7.59009 5.41L14.1701 12\" style=\"animation: initial !important; transform: initial !important; vertical-align: initial !important; visibility: inherit !important;\"><\/path>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>This required the second stage to enter orbit with a healthy amount of propellant still inside its tanks \u2013 a requirement that therefore drives the need to launch the mission on the Falcon Heavy instead of a regular Falcon 9 because the Falcon Heavy can provide the extra margin to the second stage whereas the regular Falcon 9 \u2013 even in its expendable configuration \u2013 could not.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the Falcon Heavy\u2019s performance, the center booster \u2013 given final mission and performance margin calculations and needs \u2013 had to burn so much of its fuel during first stage flight that it was incapable of performing a Boostback burn and therefore free-flew itself 1,200 km downrange from the launch pad before reigniting its engines for the Entry and Landing Burns.<\/p>\n<p>This was to mark the farthest-ever downrange landing of a SpaceX rocket, with <i>Of Course I Still Love You<\/i> positioned ~1,245 km east of the launch pad. Was a very tough ask. pic.twitter.com\/BizW0Cd4gu<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chris Bergin \u2013 NSF (@NASASpaceflight) June 25, 2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The previous farthest landing was ArabSat-6A\u2019s center booster, which landed ~965 km downrange.<\/p>\n<p>Having flown the previous Falcon Heavy mission \u2013 ArabSat-6A \u2013 back in April, the two side boosters from that flight returned for STP-2, again serving as the side boosters. They both successfully landed at LZ-1 and LZ-2.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"STP-2 Animation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qLEuCn8RT14?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At 74 days between ArabSat-6A and the STP-2 launch, this was not \u2013 by a matter of just 3 days \u2013 the fastest booster turnaround for SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p>That record is still held by the Block 4 booster B1045 \u2013 the last Falcon 9 Block 4 \u2013 which was turned around in just 71 days from its use on TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) to its use on CRS-15 in April and June 2018, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61869\" class=\"wp-image-61869 booster for this mission was brand new.\n<\/p>\n<p>After completing all pre-fueling steps, the Launch Director polled the team at T-53 minutes to verify that all is \u201cgo\u201d to proceed with propellant load.<\/p>\n<p>Once that verification was received, fueling began at T-50 minutes with the start of RP-1 kerosene load into all three first stage boosters.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 1 booster Liquid Oxygen (LOX) load then commenced 5 minutes later at T-45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 2 RP-1 load began at T-35 minutes, followed at T-18 minutes 30 seconds by Stage 2 LOX load.<\/p>\n<p>The command to light all 27 first stage Merlin 1D engines&nbsp;was issued by Falcon Heavy\u2019s onboard computers at T-2 seconds \u2013 with all engines igniting at once and imparting 5.1 million lbf of thrust into stationed farther downrange than <i>Of Course I Still Love You<\/i>, it appears \u2013 as of publication \u2013 that SpaceX was to attempt to recover the payload fairings.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk confirmed the former Mr. Steven had finally caught a fairing half.<\/p>\n<p><b>Payloads \u2013 Lightsail to surf Earth orbit<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In all, 24 payloads were launched on this Falcon Heavy \u2013 a mix of government and private testbed experiments that all seek \u2013 in some way \u2013 to demonstrate potential game-changing technology for future spaceflight endeavours.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" read our past article on some of the experiments flying on the Falcon Heavy today.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these previewed payloads, a particularly interesting experiment on this flight is the Planetary Society\u2019s Lightsail 2 mission.<\/p>\n<p>This tiny \u2013 crowdfunded \u2013 satellite aims to become the first spacecraft propelled entirely by sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>Lightsail 2 is a 5 kg (11 lb) payload contained in a 3U CubeSat measuring 11.3 x 11.3 x 48.7 cm (4.5 x 4.5 x 19.2 inches). &nbsp;For comparison, it is roughly the size of a loaf of bread in its launch configuration.<\/p>\n<p>A couple days after deployment from the Falcon Heavy\u2019s second stage, it will deploy its solar panels, which will pop up from the four sides of the craft.<\/p>\n<p>This will allow Lightsail 2 to begin charging its eight lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Solar Sailing with Bill Nye\" cameras \u2013 two 2-megapixel cameras with fish-eye lenses.<\/p>\n<p>These cameras will allow Planetary Society controllers to image deployment of the solar sail and monitor its health throughout the life of the mission.<\/p>\n<p>This will then be followed by deployment of the solar sail itself \u2013 a 5.6 x 5.6 m (18.4 18.4 ft) sheet of material that is only 4.5 microns thick (less than the thickness of a human hair).<\/p>\n<p>With deployment, Lightsail 2\u2019s sail will cover an area of 32 square meters (344 square feet).<\/p>\n<p>Deployment will occur via four cobalt alloy booms that will each be unwound like a tape measure by an on-board motor.<\/p>\n<p>The sail itself is designed with \u201crip-stop\u201d seams that will prevent large-scale tearing should the sail be hit by
