(Credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p>Ground-based treatment of such a condition involves a heavy reliance on gravity, but Dr. Cuttino\u2019s work seeks to eliminate that reliance and develop a technology that will be capable of treating a collapsed lung \u2013 technology that could later be flown aboard the International Space Station and on deep space missions, including flights of human settlement on the Moon and Mars. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the device will demonstrate its ability to collect blood in microgravity and store that blood prior to its eventual transfusion \u2013 both potentially life-saving procedures as humanity expands beyond Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Joining the Evolved Medical Microgravity Suction Device on New Shepard flight will be BioChip SubOrbitalLab. &nbsp;This biomedical experiment seeks to allow scientist\u2019s the ability to observe cell responses to microgravity and spaceflight exposure in real-time, something that is not presently able to occur aboard the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>According to the experiment\u2019s Objective listed on NASA\u2019s Flight Opportunities Program\u2019s page, \u201cIn order to fully understand the effects of microgravity on cell function, researchers need the ability to monitor subcellular processes in real-time to identify, characterize and quantify the transient, yet significant cellular responses to microgravity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining these two biomedical experiments is NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center-led Suborbital Flight Experiment Monitor-2, a package that will help evaluate variable G-force conditions on various life support system components.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Flow Boiling in Microgap Coolers experiment will, according to NASA, gather data on the \u201climitations of current cooling methods for miniaturized devices and electronics needed for technology payloads on space-bound missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61224\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/182-main-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/182-main-image.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/182-main-image-350x250.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/182-main-image-490x350.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-61224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Strata-S1 experiment.
