The plan is being led by Roscosmos, which is expected to call for at least two Progress vehicles to push the Station out of orbit for a controlled destructive re-entry.<\/p>\n<p>Although the effort is moving forward, NASA\u2019s safety advisory panel \u2013 a long time advocate of having an \u201cISS Deorbit Strategy and Contingency Action Plan\u201d in place \u2013 noted the finalizing of the evaluations are making progress, but are proceeding slower than desired.<\/p>\n<p>The ISS continues to be a jewel in humanity\u2019s space-faring crown and has many years of operational lifetime remaining. Currently, the expected lifetime will see it continue to be fully utilized by the ISS partners until around 2028, aided by additional commercial entities take advantage of its capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>However, it will \u2013 one day \u2013 come to the end of its life, be it via old age, when it suffers enough critical breakdowns that make it impossible to host humans, or via a major accident resulting in contingency plans being put into effect.<\/p>\n<p>The latter scenario is likely to be the main reason the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP)&nbsp;members have been pressing NASA to come up with a plan that would see the Station safely deorbited \u2013 a challenge in itself as it will be the largest \u201cmanmade\u201d object to be sent to a destructive re-entry.<\/p>\n<p>The nearest comparison to this event was the controlled re-entry of the MIR space station in 2001.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Mir Space Station Re-Entry And Burnup Over The Pacific Ocean\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h902KJb0cfE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>ISS partners \u2013 NASA and Roscosmos \u2013 conducted a&nbsp;bilateral Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) in 2016 to refine procedures&nbsp;relating to the disposal of the Station at the end of its service life, or in the event of an emergency. The aim is to \u2018minimalize\u2019 the potential of surviving debris impacting populated areas.<\/p>\n<p>Additional work was also cited per the requirement on the attitude thrust control estimates, given attitude control will be a key player in the final moments of the ISS\u2019 life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith regard to the ISS Deorbit Strategy and Contingency Action Plan, NASA has received and is continuing to assess information from Roscosmos and is requesting International Partner concurrence with existing documentation through the Cosmos Change Request review system,\u201d noted the ASAP in the annual report that was published this week.<\/p>\n<p>The ASAP panel report added the current status of open work includes: Functional Cargo Block propellant maintenance at vacuum; software updates to enable reentry and burn functionality; ISS guidance, navigation, and control studies; ISS survivability at vacuum; and development of draft operations products for regular and contingency deorbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough progress has been slower than desired, the effort is definitely moving forward, and the Panel is encouraged by the progress being made,\u201d the panel added.<\/p>\n<p>Providing the ISS doesn\u2019t suffer from a critical event requiring a premature deorbit, the ASAP also spoke about the nominal timeline of operation for the Station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, there is considerable debate on what the ISS lifetime should be and how to transition to a different platform to provide a persistent LEO presence. There is general agreement that the U.S. has an ongoing need for capabilities in LEO and that there should not be a \u201cgap\u201d in capabilities after ISS is no longer available. NASA is currently soliciting ideas from industry on what specific capabilities are appropriate post-ISS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This will be a key factor in the Station\u2019s longevity, not least from a funding standpoint, but also in allowing the orbital capability to continue its related role per NASA\u2019s goal of moving more resources into deep space exploration \u2013 including another \u2013 smaller \u2013 \u201cstation\u201d via the \u201cLunar Gateway\u201d&nbsp;proposal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60224\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/201912-190318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1579\" height=\"846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/201912-190318.jpg 1579w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/201912-190318-350x188.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/201912-190318-630x338.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/201912-190318-768x411.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/201912-190318-1170x627.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1579px) 100vw, 1579px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-60224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The proposed Lunar Gateway (latest version) \u2013 envisioned by Nathan Koga for NSF\/L2<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecognizing that there are many different viewpoints on what commercialization of LEO should look like, the Panel sees a continuing need for a NASA presence in LEO to conduct operations that would reduce the risk for future space exploration. The maintenance of appropriate expertise will also be key,\u201d added the panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurning LEO over to the commercial sector would seem to be a reasonable next step, allowing NASA to focus on deep-space exploration. This approach would also provide a marketplace for commercial entities to sell services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntegral to development of that plan will be the need to understand what ISS research needs to be accomplished prior to Moon and Mars operations, both in human health and in system reliability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Moon is increasingly becoming the focal point for NASA\u2019s human missions beyond Low Earth Orbit, both via the Gateway (Lunar Orbital Platform \u2013 Gateway\u201d (LOP-G)) in lunar orbit and the potential of a lunar base facilitated by the additional efforts to add commercial lunar landers into the forward plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International Space Station (ISS) partners are making progress, but are still waiting for a complete deorbit plan for the orbital outpost, to be used in the event of contingency event or during its&nbsp;eventual End Of Life (EOL) scenario.
