he served as Pilot of Endeavour during her STS-126 mission in November 2008 to the Space Station and as Pilot of Discovery\u2019s 39th and final mission, STS-133, in February 2011.<\/p>\n<p>He was then selected as one of four astronauts to work closely with Boeing and SpaceX in the development of their Starliner and Dragon crew transportation spacecraft \u2013 working with fellow astronauts Bob Behnken, Doug Hurley, and Sunita Williams.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2018, Boe was officially selected to fly the Boeing Starliner crew test flight.<\/p>\n<p>NASA noted today that Boe\u2019s removal from the flight was due to a medical issue, saying \u201cEric Boe, originally assigned to the mission in August 2018, is unable to fly due to medical reasons; as a rule, NASA does not discuss crew assignments \u2013 or reassignments as the case may be \u2013 and never divulges exactly why certain astronauts are chosen and others are not.<\/p>\n<p>Crew shuffles after assignments are considered official can happen for number of reasons \u2013 including personal medical issues, family medical considerations, disciplinary concerns, or simply for personal reasons on the part of the crewmember. <\/p>\n<p>Recently, almost all reassignments have been for personal medical issues. &nbsp;Timothy Kopra was removed from the crew of Discovery\u2019s final mission in 2011 when he suffered a bicycle accident just over one month before the Shuttle\u2019s eventual launch. &nbsp;Karen Nyberg was removed from Atlantis\u2019 STS-132 mission when she was pregnant with her first child.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most famous medical-related crew shuffle was Apollo 13, when Ken Mattingly was removed from the crew just three days before launch when he was exposed to the German measles \u2013 which he never contracted.<\/p>\n<p>In all three of those above cases, Kopra, Nyberg, and Mattingly went on to fly subsequent missions. &nbsp;Kopra flew as member of Expeditions 46 and 47, Nyberg flew as a member of Expeditions 36 and 37, and Mattingly went on to fly Apollo 16, STS-4 (Columbia) and STS-51C (Discovery).<\/p>\n<p>Replacing Eric Boe on the Starliner test flight will be veteran NASA and ISS astronaut Edward \u201cMike\u201d Fincke.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59988\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-22-at-16.15.11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1012\" height=\"968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-22-at-16.15.11.png 1012w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-22-at-16.15.11-350x335.png 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-22-at-16.15.11-366x350.png 366w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-22-at-16.15.11-768x735.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1012px) 100vw, 1012px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-59988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NASA astronaut Mike Fincke. (Credit: NASA)<\/p>\n<p>Fincke has flown three space missions to date, two long-duration flights aboard the International Space Station and one as a Mission Specialist on the Space Shuttle.<\/p>\n<p>Selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 1996, Fincke was first assigned to the International Space Station Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) arena at the Johnson Space Center and also served as a Crew Test Support Team member in Russia for Expeditions 4 and 6.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to serve as Commander of the NEEMO 2 (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) underwater mission in May 2002 before he was assigned to his first spaceflight as a Flight Engineer for Expedition 9 to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>Fincke launched on the two-person Expedition 9 mission on 18 April 2004 \u2013 when Station operations were restricted to just two crewmembers in the wake of the Space Shuttle Columbia accident.<\/p>\n<p>During Expedition 9, Fincke performed four spacewalks, or EVAs (Extravehicular Activities), in support of future Space Station construction and operations activities.<\/p>\n<p>Four years later, Fincke launched to space for the second time as Commander of Expedition 18. &nbsp;During this flight, Fincke and his three ISS crewmembers welcomed STS-126\/Endeavour and Eric Boe to the Station and also oversaw delivery of the final set of Solar Arrays for the Station on STS-119\/Discovery.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"STS-134 Launch in HD\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ReMd0MNSTwE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fincke was then assigned to his first and only Space Shuttle mission, STS-134. &nbsp;Fincke launched on 16 May 2011 as Mission Specialist #1 for Space Shuttle Endeavour\u2019s 25th and final voyage \u2013 helping achieve what was then considered U.S. construction complete of the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>Fincke has amassed a total of 381 days 15 hours 11 minutes in space and has 48 hours 37 minutes of spacewalk experience to his name.<\/p>\n<p>Fincke will now join Chris Ferguson \u2013 himself a Shuttle legend \u2013 and Nicole Aunapu Mann on the Starliner crew test flight.<\/p>\n<p>Currently available schedules from NASA show this mission launching No Earlier Than (NET) August 2019 \u2013 though it is expected to slip deeper into 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just five months after revealing the NASA astronauts who will fly the crewed test flights for both SpaceX\u2019s Dragon and Boeing\u2019s Starliner missions, NASA announced today that a medical issue will prevent one of those astronauts from flying the Starliner crewed test flight.
