(Credit: Chris Gebhardt for NSF\/L2)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the corner of the display, we call it a twizzle, is the way you register your way through all the fields you can interact with on the screen. &nbsp;And there are also bezel buttons that enable you to interact with the vehicle as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But unlike SpaceX\u2019s Crew Dragon which relies on very few physical buttons over touchscreen technology, Starliner will include no such touchscreen tech. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo touch screens,\u201d said Ferguson. &nbsp;\u201cBut you can see [there are] a very limited number of switches compared to Shuttle. &nbsp;I think someone counted and there are 40-ish as opposed to the 1,100 that were advertised for Shuttle. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo no touchscreen. &nbsp;We interact in a very Orion-like way. &nbsp;And the switches you do see are really so that if you absolutely have to do something and don\u2019t have time to navigate your way through levels of displays, they\u2019re right there for you,\u201d noted Ferguson.<\/p>\n<p>In relation to the Space Shuttle, Ferguson \u2013 who flew three Space Shuttle missions as Pilot on STS-115\/Atlantis, Commander of STS-126\/Endeavour, and Commander of the final Space Shuttle flight, STS-135\/Atlantis \u2013 stated \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a heck of a lot easier to learn how to fly Starliner than Shuttle.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Full Cockpit Launch + Crew audio Last Space Shuttle \u2666 STS-135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yaVVns_sTGY?start=1002&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it is a double edged sword. &nbsp;Even though you need to monitor the autonomy of Starliner, you have to, at the same time, be ready to take over. &nbsp;So you have to be able to understand what it\u2019s doing in order to be able to understand if it\u2019s doing it right. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I think there\u2019s going to be a pretty steep learning curve, and the initial crews will really have to learn every facet of it. &nbsp;But I\u2019m inclined to think that further down the road it\u2019ll be like Avis Rent-A-Car. You just get in, you don\u2019t have the owner\u2019s manual, and you drive. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d love to get to that point. &nbsp;It will never be that easy. So that\u2019s where we not only put the pilots in manual control, but they can also monitor how the autonomy is progressing according to the script. &nbsp;Is the vehicle doing what it\u2019s supposed to be doing?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd as we get close to the Space Station, our visual relative navigation system begins to pick up the ISS and we get an indication [on the console] and are able to actually see the image that is created [by the nav system] and ensure that the system is performing correctly by seeing the overlays of where we think the ISS is vs. where it actually is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By definition and per the requirements for the Commercial Crew Program, Starliner is perfectly capable of flying itself without any input from a crew up to the International Space Station and docking itself to the lab.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean that Boeing\u2019s Starliner team won\u2019t test some of the crew interface designs and capability for the crew to take manual control of Starliner during the CFT mission next year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54179\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NSF_20180104_190811.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1854\" height=\"885\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NSF_20180104_190811.jpg 1854w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NSF_20180104_190811-350x167.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NSF_20180104_190811-630x301.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NSF_20180104_190811-768x367.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/NSF_20180104_190811-1170x558.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1854px) 100vw, 1854px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-54179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Starliner in space, by Nathan Koga for NSF\/L2<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy definition, we don\u2019t have to do anything for docking, but when a crew is onboard we have a few belt-and-suspenders operations, I call it a backup camera, so that we absolutely make sure the vehicle is performing as intended,\u201d said Ferguson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now we have some flight rules that govern what we can and can\u2019t do on the OFT and CFT flights that really rely on the International Space Station to help confirm that we are where we say we are. &nbsp;But when you put a set of eyes inside the vehicles, we can relax the ISS constraints because we have a pilot and crew that can look and say \u2018Yes, I am where I say I am.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, the Boeing team sees the light at the end of the tunnel as all the small and constituent components of the program begin to come together. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at the point now where we\u2019re putting the icing on the cake. &nbsp;The cake is baked. This is the point where we now learn how humans work with the vehicles. &nbsp;How do we do basic, simple things.
