{"id":38347,"date":"2018-07-27T00:13:54","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T16:13:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/vss-unity-completes-third-powered-flight-achieves-mach-2-47\/"},"modified":"2018-07-27T00:13:54","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T16:13:54","slug":"vss-unity-completes-third-powered-flight-achieves-mach-2-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/vss-unity-completes-third-powered-flight-achieves-mach-2-47\/","title":{"rendered":"VSS Unity completes third powered flight \u2013 achieves Mach 2.47"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Virgin Galatic took another step closer to realizing its long-fought dream of carrying paying customers on a suborbital ride into space with a third powered test flight for the VSS Unity.&nbsp; Thursday\u2019s test was piloted by Dave Mackay and Mike \u2018Sooch\u2019 Masucci and appears to be another successful flight pushing the vehicle to new heights.<\/p>\n<p>Although no date has yet been provided as to when commercial operations will take place, this third powered flight is showing the company is on the final leg to realizing that goal.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been 10 years since&nbsp;Sir Richard Branson initially claimed Virgin Galactic would be ready to launch passengers, gaining deposits from over 500 customers.<\/p>\n<p>Faith in the long-term aim was strong, with a customer base that stood by the company even during its darkest period when the VSS Enterprise was lost during a test flight in 2014, four years into its test program.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Virgin Galactic\/Orbit section<\/li>\n<li>L2 Future Vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Virgin Galactic had to first mourn the loss and then fight back from the tragedy, working with the findings of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation to improve their design and implement them in a new spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>That new ship, called VSS Unity, was eased into service, mindful of the fact any more accidents could be a hammer blow for a company facing competition from the likes of Blue Origin.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the test program to date has proceeded without issue, with April of this year marking the first powered test of the spacecraft since that ill-fated day four years previously. Numerous mated glide tests had taken place during the previous year to prepare for the milestone.<\/p>\n<p>Via what is an incremental test series, the second powered test followed in May, with the&nbsp;focus of the test to learn more about the spaceship\u2019s supersonic handling characteristics and control system\u2019s performance with vehicle parameters that were closer to the ultimate commercial configuration.<\/p>\n<p>For that&nbsp;flight, the motor burned for the planned 31 seconds \u2013 which is less than the full flight duration \u2013 propelling&nbsp; Unity\u2019s rocket motor performed magnificently again and Sooch pulled off a smooth landing,\u201d noted&nbsp;Chief Pilot Dave Mackay. \u201cThis was a new altitude record for both of us in the cockpit, not to mention our mannequin in the back, and the views of Earth from the black sky were magnificent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;mannequin referenced by Mackay will likely be used to collect data on the flight for future passengers, ironically akin to the test data gained by Blue Origin\u2019s Mannequin Skywalker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving been a U2 pilot and done a lot of high altitude work, or what I thought was high altitude work, the view from 170,000 ft was just totally amazing.
