{"id":38428,"date":"2018-06-02T01:19:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T17:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/orbital-atk-looks-ahead-to-crs2-cygnus-flights-antares-on-the-commercial-market\/"},"modified":"2018-06-02T01:19:14","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T17:19:14","slug":"orbital-atk-looks-ahead-to-crs2-cygnus-flights-antares-on-the-commercial-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/orbital-atk-looks-ahead-to-crs2-cygnus-flights-antares-on-the-commercial-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Orbital ATK looks ahead to CRS2 Cygnus flights, Antares on the commercial market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Orbital ATK\u2019s OA-9E Cygnus mission continues its to-date flawless mission at the ISS, the company is looking ahead toward the commencement of the CRS2 contract flights of Cygnus beginning in 2019 as well as the first flights of an enhanced version of its Antares rocket. &nbsp;Orbital ATK also plans to offer Antares on the commercial market and as part of NASA\u2019s Launch Services II program.<\/p>\n<p><b>CRS2 contract flights of Cygnus:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>With just two flights \u2013 not including the in-progress OA-9E mission \u2013 left as part of NASA\u2019s extended CRS1 (Commercial Resupply Services 1) contract with Orbital ATK for Cygnus flights to the International Space Station, Orbital ATK is deep into planning for the first two CRS2 contract missions, OA-12 and -13, which are scheduled to launch in late-2019 and the first part of 2020, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor CRS2, we\u2019ll get a minimum of six missions on that contract,\u201d said Frank DeMauro, Vice President &amp; General Manager, Advanced Programs Division for Orbital ATK, in an exclusive interview with NASASpaceflight\u2019s Chris Gebhardt. &nbsp;\u201cObviously we hope it\u2019ll be more, but there\u2019s a minimum of six. So far we\u2019ve received authorization to proceed, which essentially starts the schedule clock for each of the missions, on two of the missions \u2014 OA-12 and OA-13. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they\u2019ve actually put us on contract and given us a task order for the third mission which is OA-14. &nbsp;We don\u2019t have authorization to proceed [on that mission] yet, so the schedule clock hasn\u2019t started. (Credit: Orbital ATK)<\/p>\n<p>Part of the upgrade Orbital ATK is offering NASA as part of the CRS2 contract doesn\u2019t just relate to three variants of the Cygnus craft but also to the Antares rocket itself, specifically to how cargo is stowed in Cygnus prior to lift off. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor CRS2, we\u2019re actually modifying the way and location where we\u2019re going to do the final cargo load,\u201d related Mr. DeMauro. &nbsp;\u201cRight now, we do the final cargo load in the HIF (Horizontal Integration Facility) prior to encapsulation about three or so days before launch. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut starting on OA-11, which is actually the final flight of the CRS1 contract, the Antares team is making modifications to the top of the fairing so we can actually pop off part of the fairing to give the team access to the cargo module. &nbsp;So we can open the hatch, through that popped fairing top, load the late-load cargo, close up the hatch, and then re-install the top cone of the fairing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we\u2019ll do that out by the pad. &nbsp;So the time from when we actually load that late cargo, close the hatch, do the final checks, put the fairing top back on, and then roll the rest of the way to the pad will be a much shorter time frame. &nbsp;Our plan is to be able to load that cargo and launch within 24 hours,\u201d concluded Mr. DeMauro.<\/p>\n<p><b>Antares upgrades for CRS2:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Cygnus team isn\u2019t the only division within Orbital ATK looking ahead to the CRS2 contract flights to the International Space Station. &nbsp;The Flight Vehicle Division is also working through anticipated upgrades to the Antares rocket that will allow for greater cargo upmass and performance from the rocket as well.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UCZ28hyGvK0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CRS1 contract has a certain level of cargo delivery, and in CRS2 we crank that up significantly,\u201d noted Kurt Eberly, Vice President and Antares Program Manager for Orbital ATK, related in the same interview with Chris Gebhardt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo our part of that on Antares is to lift more mass into orbit. &nbsp;And there\u2019s a number of upgrades that we\u2019ve implemented up and down the vehicle.\u201d &nbsp;The upgrades will not, as previously thought, be referred to as Antares 300 but instead as an upgrade to the currently flying Antares 230 variant. &nbsp;To this end, the upgraded Antares will be referred to as Antares 230+.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the first stage [of Antares 230+], the most significant upgrade is that we\u2019re going to add some structural capability to the intertank bay, which is between the LO2 (Liquid Oxygen) and RP-1 (rocket-grade kerosene) tanks, and the forward bay forward of the LO2 tank,\u201d noted Mr. Eberly. <\/p>\n<p>By reinforcing these structures, Mr. Eberly related that the rocket can take more bending loads through first stage flight \u2013 allowing Antares 230+ to maintain full 100% engine throttles as it passes through Max-Q, the moment of maximum mechanical stress on the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"\" style=\"position: absolute; We are on track for launch on Monday with the 5-minute window opening at 4:39 a.m. EDT\/8:39 a.m. UTC! pic.twitter.com\/EOGlI1by51<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Orbital ATK (@OrbitalATK) May 19, 2018<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Almost all other rockets have to throttle back their engines in preparation for Max-Q to reduce the stresses on the vehicle and ensure flight integrity is maintained. &nbsp;But this throttle back translates to a performance hit against the total cargo upmass those rockets can carry.<\/p>\n<p>And Antares has had this throttle back on all flights to date. &nbsp;\u201cRight now on the 230, we throttle down at Max-Q because we don\u2019t want to overload the airframe,\u201d said Mr. Eberly. &nbsp;\u201cSo that\u2019s really significant and really the biggest improvement. As you can imagine, keeping your pedal to the metal throughout the first stage burn gives us a good pick up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the solid motor Castor 30XL upper stage for Antares is also being optimized. &nbsp;\u201cSomething [the solid folks] typically do on a solid rocket motor is that they build the first one kind of conservatively. &nbsp;And [the Castor XL30 initial design] turned out to be quite conservative, so much so that they\u2019ve determined they can take some of that conservatism out. &nbsp;And so we\u2019re going to basically lighten up the inert part, the structural part, of the motor case and be able to fly that a little lighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That removal of mass from the second stage directly translates to an increase in payload upmass.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56582\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56582\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Castor-XL30.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2880\" height=\"1628\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-56582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Castor XL30 upper stage of Antares during second stage flight on the OA-9E launch in May 2018. (Credit: NASA\/Orbital ATK)<\/p>\n<p>This conservative design and removal of weight was confirmed via static fires of Castor XL30 motors in Utah. &nbsp;\u201cThe way they found this is that when they run a static fire test they quench the stage after it burns out. They basically flood it with water, and then they can measure the thickness of the insulation on the inside of the cast and the nozzle erosion. &nbsp;It\u2019s basically frozen in time at burnout because they quench it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On top of those improvements, Mr. Eberly noted that the team is also working on trajectory improvements with a load release autopilot that allows them to \u201csteer into the wind\u201d and be a little bit more aggressive \u2013 all of which together give Antares 230+ and the CRS2 contract flights increased mass to orbit capability.<\/p>\n<p><b>Antares on the commercial market:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While Antares has thus far only exclusively launched Cygnus crafts to the International Space Station, Orbital ATK will offer the vehicle on the commercial market and notes that Antares has been on-ramp is part of NASA\u2019s Launch Services II contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re on-ramped to the NASA Launch Services II contract, and that basically puts us on an approved bidders list and enables us to bid on launches that NASA has in the future. &nbsp;And so we are planning to look at opportunities that may come along and bid on them,\u201d noted Mr. Eberly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55705\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-222603.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-222603.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-222603-350x209.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-222603-586x350.jpg 586w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-222603-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-222603-1170x698.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-55705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Orbital ATK OmegA rocket soars into the sky over Florida on a launch in the 2020s. (Credit: Orbital ATK)<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Orbital ATK sees no overlap or competition between the types of missions suited for Antares and those for the upcoming OmegA rocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOmegA is an EELV-class rocket, an intermediate to heavy lift vehicle. &nbsp;It\u2019s for an Air Force customer, and while they are looking to enter the commercial market as well and NASA civil certainly, primarily OmegA is an EELV-sized and classed rocket,\u201d said Mr. Eberly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAntares is a medium-class rocket, and we have our niche here on CRS. &nbsp;And so, in the near term, we\u2019re focused on doing Antares launches and trying to win new business while OmegA is trying to get developed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Mr. Eberly sees the creation of OmegA as a mark of the synergy within the Launch Vehicles division of Orbital ATK. &nbsp;\u201cWe share personnel and resources, and it\u2019s exciting to see the work [the OmegA team] has gotten to already, and it\u2019s exciting to see the capability within the Flight Systems group and the Propulsion Systems group with the solid rocket motors. &nbsp;It\u2019s really a world-class solid rocket motor capability.
