Although it will take decades to fully realize its potential, ULA hardware is set to provide the key elements via its CisLunar 1000 roadmap, allowing numerous commercial companies to come together to create a self-sustaining community of around 1000 people in the space between the Earth and the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>The CisLunar 1000 plans revolve creating an in-space economy that would tap into the vast amount of resources that could be harnessed from objects such as Near Earth Asteroids (NEA) and on the surface of the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the community would become self-sufficient via in situ resource utilization (ISRU), while becoming economically viable via the prospecting of precious materials that are rare on Earth but abundant in space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we understand today is there\u2019s over 17,000 of these (varying range of NEAs) that come in different classes. That\u2019s about a 1000&nbsp;years of the total production we have here on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added there are more of the precious materials \u2013 such as gold, silver and platinum \u2013 in this region that has ever been mined in the history of humankind, while also referencing the large amounts of water \u2013 a key element for ISRU \u2013 that resides on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater\u2019s important because it\u2019s rocket fuel,\u201d added Mr. Bruno.<\/p>\n<p>CisLunar 1000 staging points could also become a base of operations for deep space missions, with the additional benefits of setting sail from a spaceport, with numerous components \u2013 from hardware through to propellant \u2013 having been created, harvested and stored in space, as opposed to the costly and far less efficient process of hauling them uphill from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can have our propellant in space, instead of having to lift it out of Earth\u2019s gravity well, then we have the makings of a transportation system,\u201d Mr. Bruno noted. \u201cOnce you make it to LEO you are two thirds to anywhere else in the Solar System.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55541\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-161431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1502\" height=\"881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-161431.jpg 1502w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-161431-350x205.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-161431-597x350.jpg 597w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-161431-768x450.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-161431-1170x686.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1502px) 100vw, 1502px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-55541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ULA\u2019s CisLunar envisioning<\/p>\n<p>While various proposals have been promoted over recent years, the financial viability of creating such an industry is often out of the reach of the numerous companies that have shown an interest in space prospecting.<\/p>\n<p>ULA is attempting to create the conditions that would allow interested companies to join the CisLunar workforce via a staged buildup of hardware via their primary role of space transportation.<\/p>\n<p>The first stage calls for the utilization of space habitats, allowing for an initial base of operations. ULA is already working closely with Bigelow Aerospace, allowing for obvious synergy in this opening salvo of staged hardware. This first phase would allow for around 20 people to live and work in space.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"ULA Innovation: CisLunar-1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uxftPmpt7aA?start=168&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid0\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This would create the roadmap to increase the population via the addition of more habitats and hardware. However, the company will soon evolve its fleet with the addition of the Vulcan launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>This new rocket will initially launch with the veteran Centaur upper stage before eventually welcoming a new cryogenic stage called ACES (Advanced Common Evolved Stage).<\/p>\n<p>ACES is one of the keys to ULA\u2019s CisLunar 1000 plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlright, so the propellant is there, all you need is the spacecraft\u201d, Mr. Bruno said in opening the overview of ACES. \u201cIt is a revolutionary Upper Stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55540\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-154522.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1462\" height=\"819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-154522.jpg 1462w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-154522-350x196.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-154522-625x350.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-154522-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-22-154522-1170x655.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1462px) 100vw, 1462px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-55540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ULA\u2019s ACES \u2013 via CisLunar presentation provided by ULA<\/p>\n<p>Utilizing Integrated Vehicle Fluids (IVF) technology, ACES has a lightweight internal combustion engine to capture and use the hydrogen and oxygen propellant that is normally boiled off to keep the propellant tanks autogenously pressurized, provide all the electrical power requirements and also allow for the maintaining of attitude control.<\/p>\n<p>As such, no hydrazine or helium is required by the stage, meaning IVF also allows for the stage to be used as propellant depot as only LH2 and LO2 would need be transferred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we have a stage that can live in space for three to five years,\u201d added Mr. Bruno. \u201cIt\u2019s a space truck, it\u2019s a truck in space that can be the backbone of a practical transportation system that unlocks all of those natural resources that are barely out of our reach (today).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dQtQiL_hStE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen=\"\" name=\"fitvid1\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-14=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-21=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>ULA\u2019s CisLunar 1000 plans will require numerous companies and entrepreneurs to join in with the effort to make it work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is (not just) about ULA.
