Credit: GAO\/NASA<\/p>\n<p>At this moment, Northrop Grumman\u2019s work on JWST remains the project\u2019s critical path toward being able to launch at the end of the newly aligned window in June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, given the amount of integration and testing work remaining for a project of JWST\u2019s magnitude, the GAO has concluded that \u201cthe rescheduled launch window is likely unachievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contributing to this conclusion is the fact that 8 of 16 of the spacecraft\u2019s propulsion system thruster modules were found to be leaking in May 2017 due to a solvent used for cleaning. &nbsp;The thruster modules were returned to the vendor for investigation and refurbishment and now must be installed in a manner different than originally intended so as not to damage critical electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in October 2017 while Northrop Grumman was conducting folding and deployment tests on JWST\u2019s sunshield, the contractor discovered \u201cseveral tears in the sunshield membrane layers \u2026 [caused by] workmanship error\u201d as well as a snag in the sunshield six membrane tensioning systems \u2013 both of which needed to be understood and corrected before sunshield testing could continue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55236\" class=\"wp-image-55236 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/JWST-sunshield-folding-test.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1792\" height=\"1004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/JWST-sunshield-folding-test.jpg 1792w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/JWST-sunshield-folding-test-350x196.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/JWST-sunshield-folding-test-625x350.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/JWST-sunshield-folding-test-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/JWST-sunshield-folding-test-1170x656.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1792px) 100vw, 1792px\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-55236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northrop Grumman performs folding test on James Webb Space Telescope\u2019s sunshield.
