The launch is scheduled to take place on October 30 from Kennedy Space Center\u2019s 39A. The key milestone toward officially setting this launch date was the Static Fire test, which took place near the opening of a long window that opened at midday on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX Static Fire:<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX is returning to launch action following the successful launch of the SES-11 satellite from 39A, as the company pushes forward with its increasing launch cadence.<\/p>\n<p>One of the primary elements to ensure the rocket is ready to go for its upcoming missions is the Static Fire test.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>F9 Koreasat 5A that the pad\u2019s fueling systems \u2013 and the launch vehicle \u2013 function properly in a fully operational environment, with numerous requirements to be successfully proven via such a test, such as the engine ignition and shut down commands, which have to operate as designed,&nbsp;and that the Merlin 1D engines perform properly during start-up.<\/p>\n<p>Tasks also include a full propellant loading sequence, launch countdown operations, engine ignition operations and testing of the pad\u2019s high volume water deluge system.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-52761\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_145018-350x258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The Static Test provides a dress rehearsal for the actual launch, both for the rocket and the launch team, with a series of milestones contained within the test, such as rollout, erection, power on, followed by controllers conducting a poll to allow for the loading of Falcon 9\u2032s RP-1 propellant with liquid oxygen oxidizer.<\/p>\n<p>This is followed by fuel and Thrust Vector Control (TVC) bleeding on the second stage, ahead of entering the final polling to enter the terminal count.<\/p>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>Per the countdown procedures, the tasks then enter the terminal followed by the launch vehicle being transferred to internal power.<\/p>\n<p>The Flight Termination System (FTS), used to destroy the rocket in the event of a problem during an actual launch, is armed three minutes and eleven seconds before launch \u2013 to ensure the system is working ahead of the launch day \u2013 and oxidizer topping is concluded.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-52757\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_144614-350x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"243\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Pressurization of the propellant tanks follows, and while a Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR) \u2013 which is no longer required for the Falcon 9, but will likely return ahead of the first Falcon Heavy flow \u2013 would have concluded the test at around T-5 seconds, the Static Fire continued the count through to ignition.<\/p>\n<p>A short burst of the Merlin 1D engines on the core stage of the F9 \u2013 3.5 seconds for this flow with a new booster \u2013 will then take place, which allows for validation data to be gained on the health of the vehicle and pad systems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-52762\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_145053-350x265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_145053-350x265.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_145053-462x350.jpg 462w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_145053.jpg 567w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The window for the Static Fire ranged from midday Eastern through to 6pm Eastern.<\/p>\n<p>With the required engine and vehicle data collected \u2013 allowing for a \u201cQuick Look\u201d review, SpaceX tweeted a \u201cgood test\u201d&nbsp;confirmation \u2013 detanking operations follow&nbsp;for the rest of the day, followed by the lowering on to the Transporter Erector and rollback to the hanger.<\/p>\n<p>A Launch Readiness Review (LRR) expected to take place in the coming days, which then officially sets the launch date.<\/p>\n<p>The current target is October 30, with a window of&nbsp;15:34 through to 17:58 Eastern.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/2017-09-25-214139-350x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"232\">The mission will be launched by Falcon 9 B1042. The testing of this new booster proceeded without incident after working through its first firing at SpaceX\u2019s McGregor test facility in Texas in September. (L2 McGregor Photos and Updates)<\/p>\n<p>This booster will be tasked with lofting the 3,500 kg satellite into a Geostationary Transfer Orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The Thales Alenia Space-built Koreasat 5A satellite is based on the Spacebus 4000B2 platform and its Ku-band transponders will provide coverage to Korea, Japan, Indochina and the Middle East from its orbital home at 113\u00b0 East.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-52756\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_144148-350x252.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_144148-350x252.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_144148-486x350.jpg 486w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/NSF_20171026_144148.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The booster will be attempting a landing on the SpaceX drone ship \u201cOf Course I Still Love You\u201d, which is nearing the end of repairs following a post-landing incident with the booster that successfully launched the SES-11 satellite.<\/p>\n<p>While the touchdown was nominal, a post-landing incident resulted in a short fire at the aft of the ship, which also damaged the robot that was to be used to secure the booster.
