The secret military spacecraft is set to launch from Kennedy Space Center\u2019s Pad 39A on the morning of September 7 in what is likely to be \u2013 though not yet confirmed \u2013 the final mission&nbsp;off Pad-A prior to the resumption of flight operations at neighboring SLC-40.<\/p>\n<p>X-37B Launch:<\/p>\n<p>The latest launch campaign from SpaceX follows hot on the heels of the successful lofting of the Formosat-5 satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Formosat-5&nbsp;was the twelfth launch of the year for SpaceX and the Falcon 9 and came less than a fortnight after the rocket\u2019s previous launch from&nbsp;Florida\u2019s Kennedy Space Center.<\/p>\n<p>While SpaceX\u2019s launch cadence continues to show a positive trend, the safe return of first stage&nbsp;boosters is also achieving a run of successes.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-51889\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170828_083354-350x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\">With&nbsp;B1038.1 arriving back in California at the Port of Los Angeles on the deck of the \u201cJust Read The Instructions\u201d drone ship, SpaceX has now returned six boosters to land and 10&nbsp;at sea.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, sea landings on the ASDS (Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship) fleet are deemed to be more challenging than a&nbsp;return to the LZ-1 landing pad \u2013 with SpaceX at first&nbsp;expecting to lose up to a third of the boosters attempting drone ship returns.<\/p>\n<p>For&nbsp;OTV-5, its booster B1040, will target a return to LZ-1, a landing site that is being modified for the simultaneous return of two boosters during the maiden flight of the Falcon Heavy later this year, with FH\u2019s&nbsp;core booster aiming for a drone ship landing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-51893\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-183903-350x257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-183903-350x257.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-183903-476x350.jpg 476w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-183903.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Moreover, the intersection of OTV-5\u2019s launch with SpaceX\u2019s future goals not only include LZ-1 but also LC-39A as well. Currently, OTV-5 may very likely be the final mission to launch from Pad-A before the pad is taken offline for a final round of modifications to the pad and its Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for the aforementioned Falcon Heavy debut.<\/p>\n<p>Whether&nbsp;OTV-5 is indeed the last mission off 39A before these modifications is&nbsp;dependent solely on the readiness of SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral, which is being prepared to host its first Falcon 9 since suffering extensive damage during the loss of a&nbsp;rocket that was conducting a Static Fire test with the Amos-6 satellite almost a year ago to the day.<\/p>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Screen-Shot-2017-04-12-at-11.52.11-350x204.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"204\">The decision on when to switch back to SLC-40 for the&nbsp;immediate future is pending and unlikely to be revealed until after the successful launch of OTV-5 \u2013 although L2 Cape schedules are yet to allocate a pad to the SES-11 flight, which is increasingly likely to be the mission that marks SLC-40\u2019s return. However, a release on Thursday from SpaceX classed the October mission as from 39A.<\/p>\n<p>However, all focus is currently on&nbsp;the OTV-5 mission, with the Falcon 9 rocket rolled out and erected at 39A on Thursday morning for its customary Static Fire. With a test window that opened midday local time, teams required extra time to work through the countdown milestones.<\/p>\n<p>The test fire T-0 was deep into a&nbsp;six hour window that closes at 18:00 EDT.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-51895\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-010121-350x283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-010121-350x283.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-010121-432x350.jpg 432w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017-08-31-010121.jpg 615w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The Static Fire test validates the health of the launch vehicle, allowing SpaceX management to approve the final flow to launch day.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous requirements have to be successfully proven via such a test, including&nbsp;engine ignition and shut down commands \u2013 which have to operate as designed \u2013 and the Merlin 1D engines\u2019 performances during start-up.<\/p>\n<p>The test&nbsp;also serves as a full dress rehearsal for the launch team and provides another test of SpaceX\u2019s recent upgrade to a supercooled propellant pad systems.<\/p>\n<p>Following a successful test and collection of engine and vehicle data,&nbsp;detanking operations follow before the rocket is lowered onto the Transporter Erector (TE) and rolled back to the Horizontal Integration Facility (HIF) hanger.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Falcon 9 X-37B UPDATES<\/li>\n<li>SpaceX&nbsp;Missions Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>X-37B Evolve Special (L2)<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Static Fire\u2019s data review will then be fed into the Launch Readiness Review (LRR) \u2013 a key meeting that will ultimately confirm the launch date, which is currently aiming for a several hour window that opens during the morning of September 7.<\/p>\n<p>A specific window has not yet been released, likely due to the military nature of this mission involving the secretive X-37B spaceplane, which is making its first flight with a Falcon 9.<\/p>\n<p>The award of this mission to SpaceX was quite a surprise to observers given&nbsp;all four previous X-37B missions were taken to space by a United Launch Alliance (ULA)&nbsp;Atlas V rocket.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-07-at-11.38.58-350x237.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"237\">When the fourth flight of&nbsp;the X-37B&nbsp;successfully concluded at KSC\u2019s former Shuttle Landing Facility, the U.S. Air Force issued a statement saying that \u201cThe Air Force&nbsp;is preparing to launch the fifth X-37B mission from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, later in 2017.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unexpected and critical announcement that SpaceX had been awarded that fifth mission came in front of the U.S. Senate Armed Service Committee by Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson in June, when she stated \u201cthis is the model of the X37 which will be going up again \u2026 on top of a SpaceX launcher in August.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The award is seen as a validation of SpaceX\u2019s progress with its Block 4 and Block 5 variants of the Falcon 9.
