Mitigation may include extra shifts to find margin in the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\nWorking a Path \u2013 Stepping on the Gas:<\/p>\n<p>ESD\u2019s \u201cbuild-to-sync\u201d review, which will continue into the Fall, is currently looking at how Orion, SLS, and Ground Systems and Development and Operations (GSDO) work will fit together for EM-1.<\/p>\n<p>The Orion, SLS, and GSDO programs have been working on parallel development paths to complete work to get ready for EM-1, and ESD will be in charge of final integration of that work as it comes together at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>SLS Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 SLS Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The three programs have gone through their critical design reviews, and now ESD is reviewing how the work and the schedules fit together now and in the future, including the challenges of integration in both areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of the programs went through the typical systems engineering approach \u2013 you do a systems requirements review (SRR), and then a preliminary design review (PDR) and then a critical design review (CDR),\u201d Mr. Hill explained in an interview with NASASpaceFlight.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the integration \u2018stuff\u2019, we did a systems requirements review, but our \u2018parallel\u2019 to the preliminary design review was what we call a \u2018design-to-sync.\u2019&nbsp; So we reviewed all of our design products there.&nbsp; And then this past spring and summer we did what we call \u2018build-to-sync,\u2019 which is kind of a parallel to the critical design review that each of the programs did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(That involved) pulling together the 170-plus products that we, under the Exploration Systems Development portfolio, have developed from an integrated standpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX<path d=\"M7.59009 18.59L9.00009 20L17.0001 12L9.00009 4L7.59009 5.41L14.1701 12\" style=\"animation: initial !important; transform: initial !important; vertical-align: initial !important; visibility: inherit !important;\"><\/path>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-46565\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-170449-350x238.jpg\" alt=\"2016-08-24-170449\" width=\"350\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-170449-350x238.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-170449-515x350.jpg 515w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-170449.jpg 562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Recent schedule forecasts have the integrated EM-1 Orion spacecraft and the SLS Core Stage arriving at KSC a few months later than earlier predictions, which were used to derive the current September-November, 2018 launch readiness period, and Hill noted that they are looking at different ways of adjusting the work at KSC to try to meet that window of time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a team right now taking a look at if we get Core Stage (to KSC) at the end of March (and) get Orion at the end of April, early May of \u201918, can we still make the September-November timeframe (for launch),\u201d he explained.&nbsp; \u201cWe believe we can.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil recently, everybody assumed that there was a hard nine-month schedule (at KSC). We\u2019re interrogating that; we don\u2019t think it\u2019s nine months \u2013 it was based on a one shift, five days a week schedule.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-46566\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172257-350x239.jpg\" alt=\"2016-08-24-172257\" width=\"350\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172257-350x239.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172257-513x350.jpg 513w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172257.jpg 614w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">\u201cSo we\u2019re looking at \u2018what if we introduce a three-shift, six days a week or a three-shift, seven days a week [schedule]?\u2019 We\u2019ll probably go to six days a week, just to give us a little margin. &nbsp;(We\u2019re looking at) if we do that, how much do we shrink down the schedule from nine months?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(A) \u2018back of the envelope\u2019 look (says) we can get (the schedule) down to seven months and still keep thirty days of margin in there. (And we\u2019re also looking at) how do we shrink it down even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to looking at adding work shifts to the KSC schedule, ESD and the three programs are looking at the work itself to see if time could be saved there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2016-07-21-194046-350x250.jpg\" alt=\"2016-07-21-194046\" width=\"350\" height=\"250\">\u201cWe\u2019re also looking at the integrated tests that are going to be done at Kennedy,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe had planned to do a Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR), a full up (launch countdown) rehearsal.&nbsp; We may be able to do a tanking test, get that behind us, and not have to do a full up wet dress, because Orion really doesn\u2019t get a lot of fueling or anything like that (in a WDR).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe might be able to do that independently of Orion, so we might go out to the pad without Orion and do those tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other examples of refining the path to EM-1 includes the additional pre-mate, pre-launch testing involved with the Mobile Launcher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/2016-03-03-151331-350x253.jpg\" alt=\"2016-03-03-151331\" width=\"350\" height=\"253\">\u201cWe had planned to do a full-up Mobile Launcher test at the park site and then take it into the Vehicle Assembly Building and basically repeat all of those tests,\u201d Mr. Hill added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The) Vehicle Assembly Building looks like it\u2019s going to come in a little bit ahead of where we thought it was, so we might be able to just bring in the Mobile Launcher in and just do that test once \u2013 that takes a few weeks (of work) out of the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019re looking at other options \u2013 that\u2019s what they pay us to do, they pay us to try to deliver on time and on budget and we going to continue to do that on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The build-to-sync effort that started earlier this year will continue into the Fall of this year. Mitigation of schedule concerns over two years ahead of launch will provide the program with options.<\/p>\n<p>*Click here for 100s of SLS News Articles*<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ll do is work our way through whether we choose a specific launch date or maintain the two-month window,\u201d Mr. Hill added. \u201cWe\u2019ll see how we come out in the end.&nbsp; That will culminate with an agency review sometime in the late October timeframe, early November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-46567\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172513-350x235.jpg\" alt=\"2016-08-24-172513\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172513-350x235.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172513-522x350.jpg 522w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/2016-08-24-172513.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">In the interview at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the first SLS Core Stage is being manufactured and assembled, Mr. Hill added also talked about recent adjustments to the Core Stage schedule for EM-1 that has impacted on the schedule discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just went through a renegotiation with Boeing and rebaselined the entire (Core Stage) schedule; we\u2019re sticking to that schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that we can ship out of here (MAF) with the engines integrated to get to Stennis in the September&nbsp;(2017) time-frame, get it on the B-2 test stand \u2013 where we\u2019re going to do a full-up Core Stage hot-fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/2016-01-27-133641-350x258.jpg\" alt=\"2016-01-27-133641\" width=\"350\" height=\"258\">Although the schedule is still targeting shipment of the Core Stage from MAF to Stennis in late September, 2017, the rebaseline does lengthen the time spent at Stennis for the \u201cGreen Run\u201d test campaign before the Core Stage is put back on the Pegasus barge and shipped to KSC, which moved from January to March, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the renegotiation was to extend the time at Stennis \u2013 one of the things we did that we hadn\u2019t planned on (earlier) was to repair the Core Stage if we damaged it somehow during the hot-fire,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That renegotiation had a ripple effect on the EM-1 flow, with Mr. Hill explaining the Program will have to step on the gas to counter such changes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/2016-07-07-144728-350x251.jpg\" alt=\"2016-07-07-144728\" width=\"350\" height=\"251\">\u201cWe\u2019ve added in about thirty days for that in that schedule.&nbsp;There\u2019re some other areas where we were really assuming \u2013 you\u2019ve heard of \u2018green-light\u2019 schedules?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call the next step above that a \u2018motorcade\u2019 kind of a schedule where you don\u2019t worry about green lights or red lights, you just blow through everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were kind of not as conservative on our first go-round and I think we\u2019ve got a more realistic schedule today and that\u2019s why it\u2019s where it\u2019s at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Images: NASA and L2 \u2013 including photos from Philip Sloss and SLS renders from L2 artist Nathan Koga \u2013 The full gallery of Nathan\u2019s (SpaceX Dragon to MCT, SLS, Commercial Crew and more) L2 images can be *found here*)<\/p>\n<p>(To join L2, click here:&nbsp;\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/l2\/)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exploration Systems Development (ESD) Deputy Associate Administrator Bill Hill explained plans to mitigate flow concerns \u2013 such as recent adjustments to the Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage delivery schedule \u2013 to keep the program on a path to launch Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1) in late 2018.
