Suspicion is currently falling on an element of the&nbsp;sublimator&nbsp;in the EMU 3011 suit, which may have become contaminated during storage aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This suit will be returned to Earth at the conclusion of the next SpaceX Dragon mission.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Water Leak:<\/p>\n<p>US EVA-35 successfully replaced a failed electrical component, called the Sequential Shunt Unit (SSU), in order to restore the station to its full power generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-43736\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-03-115704-350x247.jpg\" alt=\"2016-02-03-115704\" width=\"350\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-03-115704-350x247.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-03-115704-496x350.jpg 496w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-03-115704.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The spacewalk was the first ever to be conducted by a British astronaut, Tim Peake. A leak was observed at the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG) to water processing jumper connector, at the time potentially pointing to a root cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs of the leak were taken and the area dried. (However,) an attempt to recreate the leak during iodination was unsuccessful,\u201d noted L2 ISS notes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Z3142.jpg\" alt=\"Luca drinking water from helmet during EVA-23\" width=\"351\" height=\"237\">Troubleshooting also looked into the Fan\/Pump\/Separator \u2013 which was the cause of the EVA-23 anomaly where four times as much water entered Luca Parmitano\u2019s helmet in what was a far more serious incident.<\/p>\n<p>However, for Kopra\u2019s EMU, this device was deemed to be performing nominally during troubleshooting. The tests also indicated that other parts of the EVA system were not leaking.<\/p>\n<p>While an intermittent failure which could have occurred \u2013 and then cleared \u2013 during EVA 35, the investigation continued to look at all elements of the suit for a \u201csmoking gun\u201d. This effort continued via regular Anomaly Resolution Team (ART) meetings at the Johnson Space Center (JSC).<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>LIVE: EVA-35 UPDATES<\/li>\n<li>L2 EVA<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;ISS Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to utilize the vast resource of EMU experience at NASA, a Problem Resolution Team (PRT) was established, allowing for weekly meetings that included reps from all stakeholders, while splinter meetings were scheduled as required for in-depth technical topics and for the results to be briefed to the PRT.<\/p>\n<p>Fault tree closures and status briefing were then elevated to the Space Station Program Control Board (SSPCB).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation is tasked with the review of ground and on-orbit EMU performance data for trending.\u202f Data for all suits will be reviewed again in an effort to identify any early indicators of degraded performance and the provision of fault tree analysis,\u201d noted recent status.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Z78.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"320\">The latest theory, as presented by NASA management \u2013 including Bill Gerstenmaier and the director of the ISS at NASA HQ, Sam Scimemi, during the recent NASA Advisory Council (NAC) meeting \u2013 noted suspicion is falling on \u201csublimator carry-over\u201d, where excess water from the sublimator overwhelms the pick-up tubes \u2013 known as \u201cslurper tubes\u201d \u2013 that are supposed to return water back to the cooling loop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be a function of how the EVA was done. The crew was very warm to begin with and then they went into a rest period,\u201d noted Mr. Gerstenmaier. \u201c(Then) the body wants to then dump heat and that puts stress on the sublimator&nbsp;\u2013 and that\u2019s when the water started turning up. So we\u2019re pretty sure it\u2019s water carry-over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2015-05-27-003058-350x253.jpg\" alt=\"2015-05-27-003058\" width=\"350\" height=\"253\">It was also noted that contamination of the hydrophilic coating in the sublimator&nbsp;plumbing \u2013 in turn reducing its effectiveness \u2013 is a possible contributing factor, and this may have arisen from the way the EMUs are stored in the Leonardo Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM).<\/p>\n<p>The storage of some \u201chygiene products\u201d in the module may be a possible source of contaminating chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of such chemicals on the&nbsp;hydrophilic coating is already known, which is why there are strict rules on astronauts using items such as after-shave and lotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(I supposed) you\u2019ve got to balance (the risk) out with spending a year on orbit for a year without deodorant,\u201d joked on NAC member on the audio of the presentation (L2).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z52.jpg\" alt=\"SpaceX's Dragon during CRS-2, via L2's huge unreleased photo collection\" width=\"352\" height=\"233\">The investigation will be aided by the return of EMU 3011 to Earth in May on board SpaceX\u2019s CRS-8 Dragon when she unberths from her upcoming mission to the ISS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we need to get this suit back to understand what\u2019s going on,\u201d as Mr. Gerstenmaier noted during the NAC presentation.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s&nbsp;associate administrator for the Human Exploration and Operations Directorate also noted that the hands-on inspection will play into the mitigation of future issues, which, as noted, is currently focusing on how the suits are stored in the PMM on Station between EVAs, along with potential design changes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-44289\" src=\"\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/2016-03-15-185405-350x239.jpg\" alt=\"2016-03-15-185405\" width=\"350\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/2016-03-15-185405-350x239.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/2016-03-15-185405-513x350.jpg 513w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/2016-03-15-185405.jpg 573w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">It\u2019s not the first time since Dragon has come to the aid of an EMU anomaly investigation, with the spacecraft also involved with a suit relay surrounding&nbsp;Luca Parmitano\u2019s faulty suit.<\/p>\n<p>Dragon\u2019s have the ability to host a special EMU rack inside the pressurized section of the capsule for the transfer of space suits to and from the orbital outpost.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the aim is to conclude the EMU 3011 investigation by July.
