The capsule hardware was constructed at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans ahead of a trip on a NASA Super Guppy aircraft to the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF).<\/p>\n<p>Orion to KSC:<\/p>\n<p>EM-1\u2019s Orion is following a similar path to that enjoyed by the Exploration Flight Test -1 (EFT-1) Orion, where the bare bones of the spacecraft were constructed at the former home of the Shuttle External Tank production, ahead of months of outfitting work at KSC.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-09-000932-350x254.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-09-000932\" width=\"350\" height=\"254\">Work to construct the hardware officially began in September of last year, although processing information cited May 1 was the initial target for the historic milestone for the EM-1 Crew Module shell \u201cfirst weld\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A large amount of pathfinder work also took place earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the short slip to the start date for welding operations, the construction appears to have benefitted from the EFT-1 and Pathfinder paths, with two sections of the Orion spacecraft\u2019s primary structure were welded together on September 5, prior to the joining of all&nbsp;seven large aluminum pieces \u2013 via the friction weld process \u2013 without any further delays.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Orion Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 Orion Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe team at Michoud has worked incredibly hard produce a lightweight, yet incredibly durable Orion structure ready for its mission thousands of miles beyond the moon,\u201d noted Mark Kirasich, Orion program manager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work to get us to this point has been essential. transform: initial !important; vertical-align: initial !important; visibility: inherit !important;\"><\/path>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>With its processing at MAF complete, it was then packed inside a protective container and loaded onboard NASA\u2019s Super Guppy aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the unique-looking aircraft touched down on KSC\u2019s famous Shuttle Landing Facility.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers will unload it into a fixture in the Armstrong Operations &amp; Checkout (O&amp;C) Building where it will undergo testing on its subsystems.<\/p>\n<p>Those tests will ensure the structure is sound before being integrated with other elements of the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>*Click here for more Orion News Articles*<\/p>\n<p>It will then begin a long process of outfitting \u2013 following the path of EFT-1\u2019s preparations for launch \u2013 with additional elements of the spacecraft set to arrive at KSC over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Z61.jpg\" alt=\"Z6\" width=\"348\" height=\"248\">The outfitting work \u2013 which was scheduled for a run of 17 months for EFT-1 \u2013 will involve a lengthy process ranging from&nbsp;the addition of secondary structures, through to the wiring that will allow Orion to come to life.<\/p>\n<p>That latter milestone will be marked by the first power up of the EM-1 Orion inside the O&amp;C Building&nbsp;and the checkout of the spacecraft\u2019s avionics.<\/p>\n<p>Once Orion has completed its O&amp;C processing path, it will be transported out of the building to be mated atop the Space Launch System (SLS) inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) for what is currently a mid-2018 test flight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-43728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-033931-350x266.jpg\" alt=\"2016-02-02-033931\" width=\"350\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-033931-350x266.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-033931-460x350.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-033931.jpg 471w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">EM-1 involves&nbsp;an unmanned mission that will send Orion 70,000 kilometers past the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>It will allow for a major test of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket \u2013 although the Delta Cryogenic Second Stage (DCSS) will be immediately changed to the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) following this initial mission.<\/p>\n<p>Orion will also sport the&nbsp;European Service Module (ESM), with a structural test version of the hardware currently onsite at the Space Power Facility (SPF) at NASA Glenn for testing.<\/p>\n<p>The historic debut launch of SLS and Orion will be led by veteran spaceflight engineer Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, following her selection this week as the launch director for EM-1.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-43730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-035632-350x239.jpg\" alt=\"2016-02-02-035632\" width=\"350\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-035632-350x239.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-035632-512x350.jpg 512w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2016-02-02-035632.jpg 706w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The selection of the former Space Shuttle firing room controller also makes her the first woman to oversee a NASA liftoff and launch team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember when I walked into Firing Room 1 during a tour before I was hired many years ago, and one of the guys said if you take this job you will sit here at this console,\u201d Ms. Blackwell-Thompson noted. \u201cI was amazed at even being in the firing room, and the thought of being on the launch team then was unbelievable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo take that feeling and fast forward to getting the opportunity to walk into Firing Room 1 as the launch director for the SLS\/Orion vehicle;
