The revamp includes a modernization of its inner workings, including the fire suppression system \u2013 a key safety element for the massive building.<\/p>\n<p>VAB Fire Suppression:<\/p>\n<p>Ensuring humans and hardware are safe inside one of the largest buildings in the world is a challenge at the best of times, but the emphasis is increased when considering it is also the home of rockets being put through their final integration tasks ahead of launch.<\/p>\n<p>A large amount of safety protocols have always been in place for the VAB. However, the end of the Shuttle Program marked an opportunity to modernize and transform the building \u2013 and its safety systems \u2013 ahead of its next role.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-40556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-06-16-232028-350x265.jpg\" alt=\"2015-06-16-232028\" width=\"350\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-06-16-232028-350x265.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-06-16-232028-462x350.jpg 462w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/2015-06-16-232028.jpg 516w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The launch vehicle integration facility was built in 1965 to support assembly of Apollo\/Saturn vehicles&nbsp;and modified to support the Space Shuttle Program.<\/p>\n<p>The VAB features four High Bays, each with approximately 27,435 square feet of floor space and an internal height of 456 feet.<\/p>\n<p>The iconic building still has the same appearance from the outside, but within its cavernous expanses work has been ongoing for some time to realign, remove and update its giant platforms, from being able to mate Shuttle hardware to one that can allow for the integration of the huge elements that make up SLS.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>SLS Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 SLS Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Per its \u201cMulti-user\u201d brief, KSC will also be able to host the assembly of commercial rockets, with the utilization of several bays at the same time, should it be required.<\/p>\n<p>At present, only SLS has been confirmed for using the VAB. A 1.4-million-gallon water storage tank also is being refurbished.<\/p>\n<p>Ivey\u2019s Construction was founded in 1973 by Wade Ivey and is now owned by his son, Kevin Ivey. Ivey\u2019s is a small family business that is involved with a number of KSC projects.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Ivey\u2019s performed construction work at KSC from as early as 1975, as NASA began to convert the center\u2019s facilities from the Apollo Program to the Space Shuttle Program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-42537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-020252-350x231.jpg\" alt=\"2015-11-13-020252\" width=\"350\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-020252-350x231.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-020252-530x350.jpg 530w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-020252-263x175.jpg 263w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-020252.jpg 554w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Over the years, the company has performed more than 1,000 new construction and construction renovation projects at Kennedy and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the great honor of transporting and installing space shuttle Atlantis in her new home at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex,\u201d Ivey said. \u201cIt just seems natural for Ivey\u2019s to be involved in NASA\u2019s future exploration missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working for NASA\u2019s Ground Systems Development and Operations Program (GSDO),&nbsp;Ivey\u2019s work in the VAB includes demolition of the existing fire protection systems, and diesel and electric fire pumps in the VAB, LCC (Launch Control Center)&nbsp;and Utility Annex.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-42534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-015256-350x252.jpg\" alt=\"2015-11-13-015256\" width=\"350\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-015256-350x252.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-015256-486x350.jpg 486w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-13-015256.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The company is also replacing more than 20,000 linear feet of fire protection supply piping, installing new diesel- and electric-motor driven fire pumps, controllers, auto-transfer switches, piping, power, and fire alarms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe VAB is a very large and busy place,\u201d Ivey added. \u201cWe\u2019ve come up with some outside-the-box approaches to overcome the daily challenges for access to our work.
