The spacecraft \u2013 which initially suffered from an ISS-related release failure \u2013 delivered vital supplies both for the crew and the Station itself during its mission, with its final role now involving a cargo of ISS trash that was disposed&nbsp;of during its destructive re-entry on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>HTV-5:<\/p>\n<p>HTV-5 was launched to the ISS in mid-August, lofted by the H-IIB rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in Southern Japan.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-161338-350x242.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-28-161338\" width=\"350\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-161338-350x242.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-161338-505x350.jpg 505w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-161338.jpg 605w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Following a successful arriving at the ISS, HTV-5\u2019s eight rack bays \u2013 all of which were filled with HTV Resupply Racks (HRRs), delivered crucial supplies such as&nbsp;food, water, hygiene items, clothing, spare parts, personal items, and scientific experiments for the ISS crew.<\/p>\n<p>Included in HTV-5\u2019s manifest was 600 liters of potable water as well as food, crew commodities, system components, and science experiments \u2013&nbsp;totaling one ton of unpressurized cargo.<\/p>\n<p>Also aboard were various nanosatellites used for space research, known as CubeSats, including 14 Planet Labs Dove satellites, which will capture images of Earth for use in humanitarian, environmental and commercial applications.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>LIVE UPDATES: HTV-5<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;ISS Section<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;HTV Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HTV-5\u2019s the primary&nbsp;external piece of equipment for this mission is the CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET).<\/p>\n<p>CALET&nbsp;rode on the HTV\u2019s Exposed Pallet (EP) and was transferred by the Kibo\u2019s robotic arm (JEM Remote Manipulator System: JEMRMS) and installed to the Kibo\u2019s Exposed Facility (EF).<\/p>\n<p>With HTV-5\u2019s cargo fully transferred \u2013 and trash items loaded into its place \u2013 the Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) hatches between the vehicle and the ISS were closed, in preparation for HTV-5\u2019s departure from the Station on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Rocket building kits<path d=\"M7.59009 18.59L9.00009 20L17.0001 12L9.00009 4L7.59009 5.41L14.1701 12\" style=\"animation: initial !important; It was believed to be an issue with the Robotic&nbsp;Work Station (RWS) in the Cupola module, resulting in the crew moving to the back up RWS in the Lab part of the Station.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-162739-350x202.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-28-162739\" width=\"350\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-162739-350x202.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-162739-606x350.jpg 606w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-162739.jpg 608w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Cupola then showed it was back to working order, but the rest of the release window was expected to suffer from ratty comm, meaning a decision to move to the next window \u2013 one orbit later \u2013 was the best path forward, which also allowed for further evaluations into the original issue.<\/p>\n<p>Expedition 45 Flight Engineer Kimiya Yui of JAXA, backed up by NASA Flight Engineer Kjell Lindgren, commanded then station\u2019s Canadarm2 robotic arm to allow the spacecraft to bid farewell to the orbital outpost.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-175649-350x255.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-28-175649\" width=\"350\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-175649-350x255.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-175649-480x350.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-175649-768x560.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-28-175649.jpg 925w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">After a period of 90 seconds, the ISS crew sent the retreat command to HTV-5, which initiated the departure sequence burns.
