Undocking from the International Space Station (ISS) occurred at 21:29 UTC, ahead of the trio touching down on the steppe of Kazakhstan at 00:51 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>TMA-16M Return Crew:<\/p>\n<p>The return of the three crew members wrapped up 168 days in space for Padalka since launching from Kazakhstan in March.<\/p>\n<p>His fellow passengers have enjoyed a much shorter ISS tour, with Mogensen and Aimbetov spending 10 days in space, arriving at the station September 4 with Sergey Volkov of Roscosmos.<\/p>\n<p>The trio delivered a new Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft that will return NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko of Roscosmos at the end of their one-year mission next year, along with Volkov. Soyuz TMA-18M will remain docked with the Space Station for 183 days, until 3 March 2016, serving as an emergency escape vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213410-350x236.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-11-213410\" width=\"350\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213410-350x236.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213410-518x350.jpg 518w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213410.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Despite the short duration mission for Aimbetov and&nbsp;Mogensen \u2013 the latter managed to achieve success with an experiment that will become a major part of humanity\u2019s future exploration into deep space.<\/p>\n<p>As part of ESA\u2019s Meteron project, the astronaut drove two rovers on Earth via telerobotics.<\/p>\n<p>The first as the INTERACT Rover (L2 Resources) \u2013 a&nbsp;&nbsp;4\u00d74 wheeled vehicle that combined a camera head on a neck system, a pair of highly advanced arms designed for remote force-feedback operation and a number of proximity and location sensors, including an arm laser to indicate depth close-up \u2013 was successfully controlled from the ISS.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213436-350x221.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-11-213436\" width=\"350\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213436-350x221.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213436-554x350.jpg 554w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-213436.jpg 628w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">A second, car-sized rover was then controlled to repair a mockup lunar base in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomy<path d=\"M7.59009 18.59L9.00009 20L17.0001 12L9.00009 4L7.59009 5.41L14.1701 12\" style=\"animation: initial !important; transform: initial !important; vertical-align: initial !important; visibility: inherit !important;\"><\/path>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>ESA engineers were very pleased with&nbsp;Mogensen\u2019s driving skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had never operated the rover before but its controls turned out to be very intuitive,\u201d noted Andr\u00e9 Schiele, leading the experiment and ESA\u2019s Telerobotics and Haptics Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndreas took 45 minutes to reach the task board and then insert the pin on his first attempt, and less than 10 minutes on his follow-up attempt, showing a very steep learning curve.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Soyuz TMA-16M EOM<\/li>\n<li>ISS Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;ISS Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tasks will aid further understanding into how telerobotics can take routine, highly repetitive, dangerous or long-duration tasks out of human hands, and improve and hasten human space exploration missions to new destinations.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the trip home, the Soyuz TMA-16M crew donned their Sokol launch and entry suits, closed the hatch between the Orbital Module (BO) and Descent Module (SA), and strapped themselves into their Kazbek couches inside the SA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-224143-350x198.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-11-224143\" width=\"350\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-224143-350x198.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-11-224143.jpg 614w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Following undocking, which occurred at 21:29 GMT, the Soyuz enjoyed a few hours of free flight as it departed from the Station\u2019s neighborhood via two separation burns, as the crew completed the final leg of their 84 million mile journey.<\/p>\n<p>The deorbit burn was the next key milestone of the return leg, completed around one hour ahead at around midnight UTC.<\/p>\n<p>The burn took four&nbsp;minutes and 41 seconds to complete, reducing the Soyuz\u2019s velocity just enough for it to begin the plunge back to Earth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41696\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-12-015216-350x251.jpg\" alt=\"2015-09-12-015216\" width=\"350\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-12-015216-350x251.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-12-015216-488x350.jpg 488w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-12-015216-768x551.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-09-12-015216.jpg 908w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The Soyuz then completed the return to terra firma under parachute, landing&nbsp;southeast of Dzhezkazgan.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of touchdown, under soft thruster engine firing, was dependent on a number of factors, finally occurring at 00:51 UTC on Saturday. It was just prior to sunrise on Saturday morning in&nbsp;Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n<p>With landing, Padalka has logged a record 879 days in space on five flights, more than two months longer than cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, the previous record holder.
