Capt. Cassidy amassed 182 days in space, conducted six EVAs and flew on both Shuttle Endeavour and the Russian Soyuz \u2013 the latter transporting him during his a long-duration ISS mission during Expedition 35\/36.<\/p>\n<p>Chris \u201cThe Most Awesome Astronaut\u201d Cassidy:<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Cassidy is an all-American hero of the highest order, serving his country both on the battlefield and in space.<\/p>\n<p>Born January 4, 1970, in Salem, Massachusetts (but considers York, Maine, to be his hometown) Capt. Cassidy earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the US Naval Academy in 1993 and a Master of Science in ocean engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-40815\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-030846-350x211.jpg\" alt=\"2015-07-09-030846\" width=\"350\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-030846-350x211.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-030846-581x350.jpg 581w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-030846-180x110.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-030846.jpg 623w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">Capt. Cassidy completed four six-month deployments, including two tours of Afghanistan, during his ten years as a member of the US Navy SEALs team.<\/p>\n<p>He was awarded the Bronze Star with combat \u2018V\u2019 and Presidential Unit Citation for leading a nine-day operation at the Zharwar Kili cave complex \u2013 an operation that was classed as a national priority objective directly on the Afghanistan\/Pakistan border. He was also awarded a second Bronze Star for combat leadership service in Afghanistan, 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Cassidy was selected as an astronaut by NASA in May 2004 before completing his Astronaut Candidate Training. Cassidy became the 500th person to fly into space. His mission also saw a record 13 people working on the ISS during Endeavour\u2019s docked mission.<\/p>\n<p>STS-127 marked the last time that five EVAs were carried out on a Space Shuttle mission, with Capt. Cassidy conducting three of them, totalling 18 hours and five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>During the mission, Capt. However, Capt. Cassidy received special treatment for his mission.<\/p>\n<p>Cited as Flight Rule 2J\/A_B30-1 \u201cChris \u2018Most Awesome Astronaut\u2019 Cassidy\u201d,&nbsp;the document (L2) claimed Capt. Cassidy could solve most issues faced by the Station, ranging from the use of his \u201cdazzling smile\u201d as an alternative light source in the event of an electrical failure, through to ground testing confirming \u201chis thundering roar\u201d was more powerful than the S-Band communication.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-40824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-130757-350x248.jpg\" alt=\"2015-07-09-130757\" width=\"350\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-130757-350x248.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-130757.jpg 461w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">A failure of the KU-band (video) would result in Capt. Cassidy being provided with a pencil and paper \u201cto accurately record everything, as he sees at 400 frames per second.\u201d Attitude control back-up would be provided by \u201cCassidy on an exercise bike\u201d while he could also provide an alternative MMOD shield \u201cby forcefully scowling\u201d at the space debris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngineering judgment: Chris will fix it \u2013 probably with fists and explosions. Chris Cassidy is basically Chuck Norris minus the restrictions of gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Captain Cassidy would return to the Station in 2013, flying with Russian cosmonauts Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin&nbsp;on Soyuz TMA-08M (US designation of 34S). Cassidy\u2019s&nbsp;Expedition 35\/36 tour that lasted from March 28, 2013 through September 11, 2013 \u2013 which saw the arrival of&nbsp;arrival of the European ATV-4 cargo spacecraft, the Japanese HTV-4 cargo spacecraft and two Russian Progress resupply spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>On May 11, 2013, Cassidy and Thomas Marshburn performed an unplanned spacewalk. The spacewalkers ventured outside of the Quest Airlock in search of the source of an ammonia leak.<\/p>\n<p>The duo investigated the cooling loop of power channel 2B on the P6 Truss of the Station and installed a new Pump Flow Control Subassembly (PFCS). This work was deemed to be a success.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-40821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124217-350x260.jpg\" alt=\"2015-07-09-124217\" width=\"350\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124217-350x260.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124217-470x350.jpg 470w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124217.jpg 711w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">On July 9, 2013, Capt. Cassidy&nbsp;Cassidy and ESA\u2019s Luca Parmitano&nbsp;completed EVA-22 \u2013 laying the foundations for the arrival of the Russian Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM).<\/p>\n<p>Part of their EVA tasks included combining forces to remove two Radiator Grapple Bars (RGBs) that had arrived on the CRS-2\/SpX-2 Dragon, allowing them to install one on the port side truss and the other on the starboard side.<\/p>\n<p>The duo returned to spacewalk action a week later. However, once Cassidy had completed the Z1 Y-bypass jumper task, and Parmitano had completed the FGB PDGF 1553 cable task and was deep into the MLM Ethernet cable task, Parmitano&nbsp;reported a rising amount of water in his helmet, from an unknown source.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-40820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124026-350x255.jpg\" alt=\"2015-07-09-124026\" width=\"350\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124026-350x255.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124026-480x350.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-124026.jpg 547w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The significant quantity of water quickly became a concern as it was entering Parmitano\u2019s eyes, nose, and mouth, and as such ISS flight controllers made the decision to terminate the EVA early.<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Cassidy calmly assisted&nbsp;Parmitano \u2013 who by this time was struggling to see \u2013 back to Quest, resulting in a safe conclusion to the terminated EVA.<\/p>\n<p>EVA-23 was to be Capt. Cassidy\u2019s final EVA, resulting in a total of six spacewalks, with a duration of 31 hours, 14 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Previously in charge of the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) branch within the Astronaut Office, Capt. Cassidy then became the Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-40825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-131746-350x273.jpg\" alt=\"2015-07-09-131746\" width=\"350\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-131746-350x273.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-131746-449x350.jpg 449w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/2015-07-09-131746.jpg 541w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">He now replaces Air Force Col. Robert Behnken, who has held the top position since August 2012 and is also a veteran spacewalker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBob has provided outstanding leadership of our astronaut corps during the last three years,\u201d noted NASA\u2019s Director of Flight Operations Brian Kelly in a NASA release issued for the change of command.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis selfless dedication and sound guidance has been top-notch as NASA ramped up research aboard the International Space Station and began laying the groundwork for human exploration missions beyond Earth orbit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Col. Behnken was, on Thursday, selected as one of four veteran astronauts that will train to fly on Commercial Crew vehicles.
