The launch was on schedule at the opening of a 51 minute launch window at 20:40 GMT \u2013 following a couple of postponements due to poor weather.\n<\/p>\n<p>Ariane 5 Mission:<\/p>\n<p>The Ariane 5 ECA (Cryogenic Evolution type A)&nbsp;\u2013 the most powerful version in the Ariane 5 range \u2013 was used for this flight. The Ariane 5 ECA is an improved Ariane 5 Generic launcher.<\/p>\n<p>Although it has the same general architecture, a number of major changes were made to the basic structure of the Ariane 5 Generic version to increase thrust and enable it to carry heavier payloads into orbit.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>UPDATES Ariane 5 Dual Launch<\/li>\n<li>60 Launch Vehicle Manuals (L2)<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Designed to place payloads weighing up to 9.6 tonnes into GTO, this increased capacity allows the Ariane 5 ECA to handle dual launches of very large satellites.<\/p>\n<p>Given Arianespace now enjoys a full family of launch vehicles \u2013 following the introduction of the Soyuz and Vega rockets at the Spaceport \u2013 the company adopted a new numbering system to identify its missions with these three vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>As such, Ariane 5 flights carry the \u201cVA\u201d designation, followed by the flight number. The \u201cV\u201d stands for \u201cvol\u201d, the French word for \u201cflight\u201d, while the \u201cA\u201d represents the use of an Ariane launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>With the introduction of Soyuz at the Spaceport in 2011, Arianespace missions from South America with the medium-lift workhorse launcher are being designated \u201cVS\u201d,&nbsp;while flights with the lightweight Vega vehicle are referenced as \u201cVV\u201d, following its successful debut in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>The future of the Soyuz with Arianespace is being evaluated, following the issue with the recently launch of two&nbsp;Galileo satellites that were deployed into the wrong orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Arianespace will also be at the center of a new launch vehicle, the Ariane 6, which has been approved by the ESA members.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-38520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2014-12-06-18_53_28-Space-in-Videos-2014-12-Ariane-6-350x214.jpg\" alt=\"2014-12-06 18_53_28-Space in Videos - 2014 - 12 - Ariane 6\" width=\"350\" height=\"214\">The three stage vehicle will be capable of lofting 4.5 ton payloads to polar\/Sun-synchronous orbits missions at 800 km altitude and between three and 10 tons on GTO missions.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle\u2019s main stage utilizes the liquid oxygen and hydrogen Vulcain engine of Ariane 5 ECA and ME, complimented by two \u2013 or four \u2013 P120 solid rocket boosters, which will be common with Vega-C \u2013 an evolution of the current Vega launcher.<\/p>\n<p>It will also sport a cryogenic upper stage (LOX\/LH2) propelled by a Vinci engine, based on the A5ME upper stage, with limited adaptations.<\/p>\n<p>Ariane 6 in its A62 (for two boosters) or A64 (for four boosters) configuration was deemed to be the \u201cbest possible long-term solution to maintain competences in Europe and deliver launch services against competitive costs\u201d according to ESA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-37829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/2014-10-16-20_31_14-LIVE_-Ariane-5ECA-VA220-ISDLA-1-Intelsat-30-and-ARSAT-1-October-16-2014-350x247.jpg\" alt=\"2014-10-16 20_31_14-LIVE_ Ariane-5ECA (VA220) - ISDLA-1 (Intelsat 30) and ARSAT-1 - October 16, 2014\" width=\"350\" height=\"247\">Back with the current workhorse, the Ariane 5, Saturday\u2019s mission came after a couple of delays related to unfavourable weather conditions predicted around the time of launch.<\/p>\n<p>This mission had the designation of Flight VA221 in the company\u2019s numbering system \u2013 and was the six Ariane 5 liftoff from the Spaceport this year and the 77th launch of this heavy-lift workhorse.<\/p>\n<p>Ariane 5 delivered a payload lift performance of more than 10,200 kg. during the mission, which included a combined total of some 9,480 kg. for DIRECTV-14 and GSAT-16, plus the launch vehicle\u2019s dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-38518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2014-12-06-18_52_20-LIVE_-Ariane-5-VA-221-DIRECTV-14-and-GSAT-16-6-December-2014-350x289.jpg\" alt=\"2014-12-06 18_52_20-LIVE_ Ariane 5 VA 221 - DIRECTV-14 and GSAT-16 - 6 December, 2014\" width=\"350\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2014-12-06-18_52_20-LIVE_-Ariane-5-VA-221-DIRECTV-14-and-GSAT-16-6-December-2014-350x289.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2014-12-06-18_52_20-LIVE_-Ariane-5-VA-221-DIRECTV-14-and-GSAT-16-6-December-2014-423x350.jpg 423w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2014-12-06-18_52_20-LIVE_-Ariane-5-VA-221-DIRECTV-14-and-GSAT-16-6-December-2014.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\">The DIRECTV-14 spacecraft \u2013 which was built by SSL (Space Systems\/Loral) for operator DIRECTV \u2013 is based&nbsp;on SSL\u2019s 1300-series platform.
