The company announced the&nbsp;Dream Chaser for Science, or DC4Science, a variant that would offer a&nbsp;free-flying microgravity science laboratory to commercial and international customers.<br \/>\nDream Chaser status:<\/p>\n<p>SNC lost out in&nbsp;NASA\u2019s Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) contract award decision last month, with the Agency opting to press forward with funding for SpaceX\u2019s Dragon V2 (now understood to be known simply as \u201cDragon 2\u201d) and Boeing\u2019s CST-100.<\/p>\n<p>Although SNC has protested the decision, it is unlikely the company will change NASA\u2019s decision. The Agency has already won a legal decision that allows SpaceX and Boeing to proceed with Commercial Crew work while the protest is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Z412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"258\">Prior to the protest, SNC had already noted they would press forward with their plans for the Dream Chaser, a spacecraft that was never exclusively designed for transporting NASA astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSNC has made the decision to continue the development of the Dream Chaser to flight, including a near term bid on NASA\u2019s CRS2 effort,\u201d SNC noted after losing out on CCtCap funding, pointing to a potential cargo role for the vehicle&nbsp;\u2013 which is currently being served by SpaceX and Orbital via the ongoing Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contracts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/2014-10-01-23_00_58-Sierra-Nevada-and-Stratolaunch-Team-Up-on-Dream-Chaser-Space-Plane-NBC-News.co_-350x236.jpg\" alt=\"2014-10-01 23_00_58-Sierra Nevada and Stratolaunch Team Up on Dream Chaser Space Plane - NBC News.co\" width=\"350\" height=\"236\">Following the Commercial Crew blow, SNC announced it is looking to&nbsp;join forces with Stratolaunch System\u2019s air launch architecture.<\/p>\n<p>This would involve a scaled version of the Dream Chaser to fly crewed and automated missions with the air launch carrier. (Another article on this aspiration \u2013 &nbsp;based on new L2 documentation \u2013 will be published next week).<\/p>\n<p>Such a system could also be utilized for un-crewed space missions, including science missions, light cargo transportation or suborbital point-to-point transportation.<\/p>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-37947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/2014-10-24-13_44_46-SNC_DC_D2_1.jpg-Paint-350x228.jpg\" alt=\"2014-10-24 13_44_46-SNC_DC_D2_1.jpg - Paint\" width=\"350\" height=\"228\">Science missions has long been an aspiration for the Dream Chaser, as previously intimated by&nbsp;Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president and head of SNC\u2019s Space Systems.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sirangelo noted that DCSS systems can be tuned to specific applications and requirements, such as extended duration flight and fully autonomous missions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are looking (at Dream Chaser) as a utilitarian vehicle in space.&nbsp;It has the capability of doing many more missions. We\u2019re actively developing new customers,\u201d he said at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Z32.jpg\" alt=\"Z3\" width=\"357\" height=\"229\">The overall goal is to allow the DCSS to play several roles, such as being a space taxi to a private station, payload delivery and retrieval not unlike her Space Shuttle relatives, along with the capability to deploy telescopes or lab experiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose (new customer) markets fall in to three main categories: Working in space, discovering in space and observing from space. That would allow us to contemplate a series of microgravity experiments in configurations that could conduct short, medium and long term missions. We might also be able to do direct observation in space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of the missions, the vehicle has a tremendous amount of capability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now SNC have provided further details per its science mission goals, with a variant of the spacecraft that is called the&nbsp;the&nbsp;Dream Chaser for Science, or DC4Science. This is a change of call sign from the previously mooted \u201cDream Lab\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-37944\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/2014-10-24-12_47_51-SNC-Dream-Chaser-Science-Mission-Mock-Up-PRWeb.jpg-Paint-297x350.jpg\" alt=\"2014-10-24 12_47_51-SNC Dream Chaser Science Mission Mock Up PRWeb.jpg - Paint\" width=\"297\" height=\"350\">The announcement came via the revealing of a Dream Chaser Science Mission Mock-Up at the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) conference in Pasadena, California \u2013 showing the current status of its science mission variant that would provide a free-flying microgravity science laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>A display of the interior volume configuration options for customers \u2013 illustrating one of many integration testing and display \u2013 is being exhibiting by SNC, Teledyne Brown Engineering, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, BioServe Space Technologies and ORBITEC.<\/p>\n<p>The mock-up will eventually return to SNC\u2019s Space Systems based in Louisville, Colorado, for future integration testing.<\/p>\n<p>The DC4Science spacecraft \u2013 SNC note \u2013 is designed to fly independently for short and extended durations to provide customers in such fields as biotech and pharmaceuticals, biology and life science, and material and fluid science with a flexible and evolvable vehicle easily suited for individual mission requirements.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Z81.jpg\" alt=\"Z8\" width=\"350\" height=\"236\">\u201cBy utilizing Dream Chaser as an orbiting scientific laboratory, our customers can fly tailored missions to meet their distinct needs,\u201d noted John Roth, vice president of business development for SNC\u2019s Space Systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur unique spacecraft offers customers the option for crewed, uncrewed, or telepresence flights, enabling scientists to have complete control of their own payloads \u2013 critical for research and development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomers will maintain scientific intellectual property rights, free from Federal Research Laboratory regulations that govern the International Space Station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Z113.jpg\" alt=\"Z11\" width=\"345\" height=\"216\">SNC note one of the major attractions to potential customers will be Dream Chaser\u2019s heavily advertised cross range capability, allowing for a wide range of international landing options \u2013 allowing experiments to be returned to a location specific to the customer\u2019s requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy allowing customers to be involved from mission definition through mission operation, and providing immediate access to science payloads at a customer-selected landing site, the Dream Chaser offers the scope and flexibility to enhance and enable microgravity science,\u201d added Mr. Roth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur DC4Science mission capability is designed to change the paradigm of orbital microgravity science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Images: L2 Content and SNC.
