{"id":39564,"date":"2014-06-15T19:54:12","date_gmt":"2014-06-15T11:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/russian-glonass-launch-spotted-by-the-iss-crew\/"},"modified":"2014-06-15T19:54:12","modified_gmt":"2014-06-15T11:54:12","slug":"russian-glonass-launch-spotted-by-the-iss-crew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/russian-glonass-launch-spotted-by-the-iss-crew\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian GLONASS launch spotted by the ISS crew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The launch of a Soyuz 2-1B from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome \u2013 lofting another Russian GLONASS&nbsp;-M satellite \u2013 caught the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) by surprise this weekend, as European astronaut Alexander Gerst grabbed his camera and took photos of the satellite ascending during powered flight.<\/p>\n<p>\nRussian Launch:<\/p>\n<p>The Russian GLONASS Global Navigation Satellite System \u2013 operated by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces \u2013 is the only alternative to the US GPS fleet in operation that has global coverage of comparable precision.<\/p>\n<p>Development of GLONASS began in the Soviet Union in 1976. Three GLONASS-M birds were set to join the constellation last year,&nbsp;but were lost when their Proton-M launch vehicle dramatically failed during launch.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s launch of another GLONASS-M went to plan, however. With the satellite \u2013 designated number 55 \u2013 lofted uphill by the Soyuz 2-1B and its Fregate Upper Stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the telemetry received from Glonass-M N55, the satellite is in good health, all its mechanical subsystems have deployed normally, Sun and Earth acquisition have been performed as designed,\u201d noted a post launch release from ISS Reshetnev.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-36275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Z8.jpg\" alt=\"Z8\" width=\"348\" height=\"244\">The company \u2013 which provide GLONASS\u2019 launch and satellite services \u2013 went on to note this latest satellite is also providing some experimental testing of a new frequency band.<\/p>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlonass-M 55 was put into the third orbital plane to provide positioning services from its orbital slot N21.&nbsp;The Glonass-M N55 satellite is equipped with the experimental payload capable of transmitting signals in the L3 frequency band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe experiment will include flight testing of the new equipment and evaluation of the accuracy characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-36274\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Z52.jpg\" alt=\"Z5\" width=\"349\" height=\"238\">The launch uphill was also spotted by the crew of the ISS, as the mission proceeded towards its 12,000 mile destination. The entire ascent phase required three burns of the Fregate, resulting in a 3.5 hour mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks like something launched into space yesterday over Russia, possibly a GLONASS Sat from Plesetsk,\u201d noted Gerst on Sunday from the orbital outpost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpooky in a way, brilliant in view but without the slightest sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlad it didn\u2019t come much closer,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time a satellite launch has been spotted by the ISS crew, not least when a large set of photos were sent down&nbsp;to the ground last year \u2013 showing a spectacular view of a Russian&nbsp;Topol\/SS-25 missile that was launched by the Russian military.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Topol_NSF.gif\" alt=\"Topol_NSF\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\">The rocket was launched from Kapustin Yar with a target of passing over the Sary Shagan test site in Kazakhstan. The missile has a range of nearly 7,000 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The hi-res images (a huge set available in L2&nbsp;\u2013 from which the .gif was created) were captured from the ISS by Luca Parmitano and fellow Expedition 37 crewmember Mike Hopkins.<\/p>\n<p>The launch gained a similar twitter reaction to that of Gerst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaw something launch into space today,\u201d tweeted Hopkins. \u201cNot sure what it was but the cloud it left behind was pretty amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Images: via L2\u2019s Russian Section.
