More importantly, the announcement provided extra details on the vehicle\u2019s future ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>\nDream Chaser Deal:<\/p>\n<p>The Commercial Crew contender is currently focused on winning through an upcoming NASA downselect to press forward with the return of domestic crew transportation from US soil to the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>However, Dream Chaser has many strings to her bow, just like her since-retired relative, the Space Shuttle.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Z412.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"258\">The vehicle\u2019s ability to launch both crewed and uncrewed, to various orbital freeways and destinations has won the affections of numerous entities, in turn providing a level of financial security, in the event Dream Chaser fails to win continued NASA funding from the Commercial Crew Program (CCP).<\/p>\n<p>While&nbsp;Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president and head of SNC\u2019s Space Systems, believes his vehicle is winning the NASA race &nbsp;\u2013 one where Dream Chaser is pitted against SpaceX\u2019s Dragon and Boeing\u2019s CST-100, SNC is placing its fingers in many other pies, in order to fully utilize their spacecraft\u2019s future aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>While there has been talk of external deals for some time, Wednesday marked the official announcement of an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German space program, DLR.<\/p>\n<p>Although the announcement only confirmed the \u201ccooperative understanding\u201d between the new partners, the deal is a step in the right direction for Dream Chaser, as the Colorado company taps into the engineering expertise at the European powerhouses.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Commercial Crew Forum<\/li>\n<li>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle <\/li>\n<li>L2 Future&nbsp;Vehicles&nbsp;Section<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;Dream Chaser&nbsp;Special<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The outline of the agreement is centralized on the&nbsp;potential application of European technologies to both the current Dream Chaser design, and advanced derivative versions of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis international collaboration will also help define missions outside the Dream Chaser\u2019s primary mission of ferrying U.S. and partner nation astronauts to low-Earth orbit,\u201d noted SNC in a release.<\/p>\n<p>Examples were provided in a related teleconference, with references to how the&nbsp;Europeans may be able to offer a lighter version of the Thermal Protection System (TPS) that is currently allocated to the future Dream Chaser fleet, adding to the potential upmass the spacecraft could loft uphill.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Dream Chaser Docking\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Z714.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"223\">Docking to the ISS was also focused on, specific to&nbsp;ESA\u2019s International Berthing Docking Mechanism \u2013 an advanced docking system that actively captures and provided the seal between the vehicle and Station. The announced deal opens up cooperation between SNC and ESA on how to implement such a system on the Dream Chaser.<\/p>\n<p>However, by far the most interesting comment came from Jan Woerner, the chairman of the German space agency (DLR), who appeared to confirm studies into launching Dream Chaser on an Ariane rocket.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-32159\" alt=\"Z6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Z63.jpg\" width=\"349\" height=\"225\">\u201cIt could even be possible to launch the Dream Chaser \u2013 with some minor changes \u2013 from within the fairing,\u201d Professor&nbsp;Woerner added, clearly citing an unmanned mission for the spacecraft. \u201cBut that would mean the Dream Chaser would have to be changed a little bit, because the wings are a little bit too big.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr we could put it on top of the launcher, like it is with Atlas V, but then we would have to recalculate all the aerodynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor&nbsp;Woerner stressed they had only looked at simulations. A reference to Dream Chaser being too heavy was later revealed as a joke about a civil engineer using concrete, not about the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time the Europeans have looked at launching a space plane atop of the Ariane rocket, as seen via the ill-fated Hermes program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z122.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"236\">Notably, such a possibility of Dream Chaser riding with a European launcher is long into the distant future, with the current evaluations focused on riding with the United Launch Alliance\u2019s Atlas V \u2013 as per the proposal in the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) drive.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate focus of the European deal will remain on the docking system and technologies available at ESA and the DLR,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday marks a special day for SNC,\u201d added Mr. Sirangelo. \u201cWith the start of these new relationships with ESA and DLR we are able to continue to expand the Dream Chaser Space System globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe combined strengths of our partner space agencies, industrial companies and education institutions will significantly advance space education, exploration and, for various missions such as microgravity science, spacecraft servicing, debris removal, and materials manufacturing, provide economic benefits to all partners and strengthen U.S. and international ties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dream Chaser Forward Plan:<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Sirangelo also took time to update the current status of the program, noting the Dream Chaser Engineering Test Article (ETA) is currently on her way back to SNC\u2019s base in Colorado, following her test flight last year.<\/p>\n<p>With all the main objectives passed with flying colors, Dream Chaser&nbsp;passed the final NASA Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev-2) milestone requirement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Z7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Z76.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"222\">Although the landing suffered a failure of the port landing gear, resulting in the vehicle hurtling off the runway, in turn causing a large amount of cosmetic damage,&nbsp;Mr. Sirangelo pointed out the test timeline is actually a few months ahead of schedule, thanks to the multitude of data collected during her debut flight.<\/p>\n<p>The ETA will now be upgraded for one or two more flights \u2013 listed as ALT-1 and ALT-2 \u2013 beginning later this year. Both will once again be conducted at the Dryden Flight Research Center in California.<\/p>\n<p>*Click here for more Dream Chaser articles*<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The ETA) is fully repairable, the primary structures were not damaged,\u201d added the SNC boss. \u201cThe vehicle is on its way back here for its upgrades. We expect to be conducting air operations with this vehicle again this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Dream Chaser ETA Cockpit via L2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Z662.jpg\" width=\"349\" height=\"217\">The upgrade of the ETA will result in her changing call signs from the Block 0 to the Block 0.5.<\/p>\n<p>A final Californian test will involve a crewed high altitude approach and landing in 2015, with the ETA upgraded to the final Block 1 configuration.<\/p>\n<p>This upgrade will overlap with the final construction work on the Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV) version of the Dream Chaser, which will ride atop of an Atlas V for an uncrewed test flight into space.<\/p>\n<p>This vehicle is currently being manufactured at the Michould Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans, per their association with Lockheed Martin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Crew boarding Dream Chaser\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z1031.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"239\">Known as OFT-1 (Orbital Test Flight -1), Mr. Sirangelo noted this should take place in&nbsp;late 2016, with OFT-2 following in early 2017, carrying two crewmembers to the ISS for docking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect the first orbital launch to occur in 2016 \u2013 which will be an unmanned autonomous mission and we\u2019re expecting our first human certification mission in 2017,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>All of these test flights will lay the foundations for the final fully operational version, the Dream Chaser Space System (DCSS), which will be the baseline design that can foster several variants to account for potential NASA, ESA, Military, and customer specific applications.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Z84.jpg\" width=\"349\" height=\"232\">It is understood the DCSS systems can be tuned to specific applications and requirements, such as extended duration flight and fully autonomous missions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing with NASA is primarily looking at transporting crew and cargo, but what we\u2019re also looking (at Dream Chaser) as a utilitarian vehicle in space,\u201d&nbsp;Mr.&nbsp;Sirangelo continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has the capability of doing many more missions. We\u2019re actively developing new customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-32160\" alt=\"Z8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Z81.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"236\">The goal is to allow the DCSS to play several roles, such as being a space taxi to a private station, payload delivery and retrieval not unlike her Space Shuttle relatives, along with the capability to deploy telescopes or lab experiments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose (new customer) markets fall in to three main categories: Working in space, discovering in space and observing from space. We\u2019re looking at satellite deployment, debris removal, being able to deorbit or reposition things in space and potentially being able to construct things in space,\u201d added Mr.&nbsp;Sirangelo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to turn our vehicle into a mobile laboratory, and we\u2019re calling that Dream Lab. That would allow us to contemplate a series of microgravity experiments in configurations that could conduct short, medium and long term missions.
