ATK will provide the first and second stages for the vehicle \u2013 nicknamed Pegasus II \u2013 that will be air-launched from a huge carrier plane, with test flights set to begin as early as 2017.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Stratolaunch:<\/p>\n<p>Announced at the end of 2011, Stratolaunch was revealed as a collaboration between inventor, investor and philanthropist Paul G. transform: initial !important; vertical-align: initial !important; visibility: inherit !important;\"><\/path>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p>While the SLF\u2019s 300 feet wide, 15,000 feet long strip, is firmly in Stratolaunch\u2019s sights as the potential East Coast location for their missions, the focus will initially be to the west, with Stratolaunch systems already signed up to a 20-year lease agreement with the Kern County Airport Authority, Mojave, California, for the lease of 20 acres at the Mojave Air and Space Port.<\/p>\n<p>The launch vehicle that will ride with the Stratolaunch carrier aircraft is being designed by Orbital, after taking over the project when Stratolaunch and SpaceX \u2013 the initial provider of the rocket \u2013 parted ways.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30251\" title=\"Pegasus II during the climb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Z36.jpg\" alt=\"Pegasus II during the climb\" width=\"351\" height=\"236\">Exclusive details (L2) note the Orbital rocket, tagged as Pegasus II, will have a GLOW of 485,000 lbs resulting in a payload capability to Low Earth Orbit of 13,500 lbs.<\/p>\n<p>The first and second stages are made from \u201ccarbon-composite wound\u201d cases, with the same outside diameter as the Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) segments.<\/p>\n<p>These two stages will sport additional performance via an updated propellant mix, under development by ATK, who officially joined the team via a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cATK is pleased to receive this award for the development and production of first and second stage propulsion for the Stratolaunch ALV,\u201d said Blake Larson, president of ATK Aerospace Group. \u201cOur innovative propulsion concept combines both proven and state-of-the-art technologies that will provide a high-performing, cost-effective solution for the ALV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30252\" title=\"ATK Castor Stage on Antares, via L2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Z43.jpg\" alt=\"ATK Castor Stage on Antares, via L2\" width=\"349\" height=\"255\">The contract from Orbital includes the design, development and flight hardware for initial Stratolaunch missions and expands on their partnership that dates back to the development of Orbital\u2019s original air-launched vehicle, Pegasus, which also uses ATK solid rocket motors for stage propulsion.<\/p>\n<p>ATK also provide orbital propulsion for Orbital\u2019s new Antares launch vehicle, which debuted earlier this year ahead of its opening role with the Cygnus spacecraft next month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur design solution for the ALV will take full advantage of ATK\u2019s experience with large diameter solid rocket motors, like those built for the Space Shuttle and for the Titan IVB launch vehicle,\u201d added Scott Lehr, vice president and general manager of ATK\u2019s Defense and Commercial Division.<\/p>\n<p>Click here for more Stratolaunch articles: http:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/?s=stratolaunch<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stages for ALV will also use high-strength, low-weight graphite composite cases, advanced propellants, and heritage materials from ATK\u2019s extensive line of commercial solid rocket motors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30253\" title=\"Mixing propellent at ATK, via L2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Z511.jpg\" alt=\"Mixing propellent at ATK, via L2\" width=\"289\" height=\"284\">ATK are also busy at work developing new mixes for their Advanced Booster project for the Space Launch System (SLS), an area the Utah-based company are well-versed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSolid rocket motors use stable propellants and have proven highly reliable in a wide variety of systems. They are highly engineered systems that are designed for simplified operations, and minimize ground support infrastructure requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Per the additional details provided to L2, the rocket will also have a Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system on both the first and second stages \u2013 unlike Pegasus, which does not have a TVC on its first stage.<\/p>\n<p>The first two stages will act like a single first stage, given they will provide half of the required Delta-v. However, new information notes the first stage may also be recoverable after staging and splashdown.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30254\" title=\"Pegasus II on the Third Stage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Z86.jpg\" alt=\"Pegasus II on the Third Stage\" width=\"348\" height=\"243\">Once the solid stages have been expended, a restartable cryogenic third stage \u2013 currently baselined as utilizing two Pratt &amp; Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR) RL-10 engines for the development and early flights of the rocket \u2013 will be used, pending development of a higher thrust LOX-Hydrogen unit.<\/p>\n<p>The human rating effort continues to be classed as only at a very preliminary concept.
