Shortly after, the pilots triggered ignition of the rocket motor, causing the main oxidizer valve to open and igniters to fire within the fuel case.<\/p>\n<p>With SS2 propelled forward and upward to a maximum altitude of 56,200 feet, the 16 seconds firing saw SS2 go supersonic, achieving Mach 1.2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first powered flight of Virgin Spaceship Enterprise was without any doubt, our single most important flight test to date,\u201d said Sir Richard. \u201cFor the first time, we were able to prove the key components of the system, fully integrated and in flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-29062\" title=\"SS2 Powered Flight\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z416.jpg\" alt=\"SS2 Powered Flight\" width=\"349\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z416.jpg 349w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z416-180x110.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\">Several additional powered flights will take place \u2013 expanding the spaceship\u2019s powered flight envelope \u2013 ahead of the \u201crealistic goal\u201d \u2013 according to Virgin Galactic \u2013 of suborbital test flight by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rocket motor ignition went as planned, with the expected burn duration, good engine performance and solid vehicle handling qualities throughout,\u201d added Virgin Galactic President &amp; CEO George Whitesides. \u201cThe successful outcome of this test marks a pivotal point for our program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will now embark on a handful of similar powered flight tests, and then make our first test flight to space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-29064\" title=\"Spaceport America\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z515.jpg\" alt=\"Spaceport America\" width=\"348\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z515.jpg 348w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Z515-263x175.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px\">It is not yet know as to when commercial passengers will be able to board a SS2 from the newly built Spaceport America in New Mexico.
