The arrival of the rocket \u2013 ahead of a hot fire at the pad \u2013 should mark the end of delays related to construction difficulties for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS).<\/p>\n<p>Antares Rollout:<\/p>\n<p>Orbital and SpaceX won a combined&nbsp;3.5 billion dollars Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract back in 2008, required due to the ISS\u2019 cargo resupply needs in the post-shuttle era. The award from NASA orders eight flights valued at about $1.9 billion from Orbital and 12 flights valued at about $1.6 billion from SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26273\" title=\"Z41\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z41.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"243\">While SpaceX are just days away from launching their Falcon 9 and Dragon combination on the first of their CRS missions \u2013 following the success of their demonstration flights \u2013 Antares and Cygnus are yet to leave the ground. However, the vehicle formerly known as Taurus II is expected to gain a lot of ground, pending a successful test flight.<\/p>\n<p>That debut launch \u2013 which will be without Cygnus \u2013 is still expected before the end of the year, to be followed by Cygnus\u2019 first flight to the ISS to take place early in 2013. Should these demonstrations prove to be successful, Orbital will begin to satisfy their CRS mission obligations.<\/p>\n<p>The Antares is the first cryogenically powered launch vehicle produced by Orbital Sciences, as well as its largest to date. Unlike competitor SpaceX\u2019s philosophy of internal design and production of components, Orbital decided to use experienced contractors for major elements of the launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26271\" title=\"Z3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"234\">The main engine for the first stage of the Antares is the Aerojet produced AJ-26.<\/p>\n<p>The engines are rebuilt version of Soviet NK-33, originally intended for the massive N-1 launch vehicle. Yuzhnoye has extensive knowledge in producing kerosene rocket bodies as the producer of the Zenit launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26272\" title=\"Z4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"240\">Orbital Sciences originally conceived of a core with a single NK-33 derived engine combined with strap-on solid boosters. However a second engine was ultimately added to the core and the boosters were removed from the final design.<\/p>\n<p>The second stage of the Antares comes from another industry veteran, Alliant Techsystems (ATK). The vehicle utilizes a solid upper stage called the Castor 30, which is a derivative of the Athena and Taurus I first stage Castor 120 which is in turn a derivative of the Peacekeeper ICBM first stage.<\/p>\n<p>The first two initial flights will use the Castor 30A, while an upgraded version will be utilized for the next two flights called the Castor 30B.<\/p>\n<p>Orbital originally intended at this point to switch to a liquid upper stage called the HESS utilizing the Russian RD-0124. However, the company later decided to go with a stretch of the original upper stage called the Castor 30XL.&nbsp; The Castor 30XL will power the last six flights scheduled right now for the Antares, and will launch extra cargo on a larger Cygnus Spacecraft.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Orbital Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;COTS\/CRS Section<\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;ISS Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Two optional third stages are also available for Antares, namely the Hydrazine Propulsion System (HAPS) \u2013 a derivative of the Orbital STAR bus designed to inject a payload to a designated orbit with more precision, while the Star 48 third stage can be utilized for orbits requiring higher energy. Neither stage is current slated on the vehicle\u2019s manifest.<\/p>\n<p>Antares will utilize a three digit designation based on the combination of stages utilized. The first digit will always be a one and refer to the kerosene core. The second stage will be labeled 1 for the Castor 30A, 2 for B, and 3 for XL. The last digit refers to the upper stage being utilized, with a 1 being the designation for the HAPS stage and 2 for the Star 48 and 0 for no upper stage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26274\" title=\"Z416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z416.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"226\">Development of the vehicle has proceeded well. However, the main reason for the delays to Antares\u2019 schedule relates to the MARS facility at NASA\u2019s Wallops base, specifically the completion of construction work on the launch pad\u2019s propellant handling and pressurization systems.<\/p>\n<p>The project to build the facility at Wallops involved a four-year design, development, construction, test and inspection process, overseen by the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority (VCSFA).<\/p>\n<p>With the official authorization for Orbital to begin on-pad operations, leading up to flight demonstrations of its Antares vehicle, the first rocket took its historic roll to the pad early on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26275\" title=\"Z5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z5.jpg 351w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z5-263x175.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\">\u201cMARS has completed construction and testing operations on its launch complex at Wallops Island, the first all-new large-scale liquid-fuel launch site to be built in the U.S. in decades,\u201d said David W. Thompson, Orbital\u2019s President and Chief Executive Officer, in a statement to the media on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks, Antares will be put through the major ground test objective of the first-stage hold-down evaluations. For this test, the vehicle\u2019s AJ-26 engines will be ignited for a 30 second hot fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur pad operations are commencing immediately in preparation for an important series of ground and flight tests of our Antares medium-class launch vehicle over the next few months,\u201d added Mr Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>Once Orbital have demonstrated the readiness of the rocket\u2019s first stage and launch pad fueling systems to support the upcoming flights, Antares will begin a flow lasting around one month ahead of its maiden flight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-26270\" title=\"Z7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Z7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"245\">For the debut mission, Antares will carry a Cygnus mass simulator payload that will be heavily instrumented to gather data on the launch environment aboard Antares.
