{"id":40144,"date":"2012-04-26T21:17:40","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T13:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/esa-sign-big-money-deal-with-astrium-uk-for-solar-orbiter\/"},"modified":"2012-04-26T21:17:40","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T13:17:40","slug":"esa-sign-big-money-deal-with-astrium-uk-for-solar-orbiter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/esa-sign-big-money-deal-with-astrium-uk-for-solar-orbiter\/","title":{"rendered":"ESA sign big money deal with Astrium UK for Solar Orbiter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the 50th anniversary of Britain\u2019s first journey into space, the European Space Agency (ESA) have signed a 300 million Euro deal with Astrium UK \u2013 one of the largest ever contracts to be signed between the ESA Science Programme and a UK company \u2013 for the construction of Europe\u2019s next generation solar orbiter called SolO.<\/p>\n<p>Big Deal 50 Years In:<\/p>\n<p>Although the UK has only played a part role in the planet\u2019s orbital ambitions \u2013 mainly due to political restrictions that even resulted in most UK born astronauts having to become US citizens in order to fly into space \u2013 hopes are high than the recently formed UK Space Agency (UKSA) will finally push the country forward on orbit.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24158\" title=\"Z3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z324.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"242\">Regardless, the UK already has a number of star players, ranging from the hugely successful Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, through to the very exciting work being conducted by Reaction Engines Ltd, who are continuing their development of the Skylon vehicle that will utilize SABRE engines.<\/p>\n<p>The Stevenage-based Astrium UK are part of a major multi-national company, famed for building large numbers of the spacecraft currently in \u2013 and set to ride uphill towards \u2013 orbit. Thursday\u2019s deal with ESA was announced on the day Britain sent up its first satellite 50 years ago, when Ariel 1 launched on 26 April, 1962.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as S-55 and UK-1, the satellite was launched on a Thor-Delta from LC-17A at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), marking the UK\u2019s entrance as the third country to operation a satellite on orbit, after the United States and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Orbiter \u2013 SolO:<\/p>\n<p>The next generation Solar Orbiter will investigate how the Sun creates and controls the heliosphere, the extended atmosphere of the Sun.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>News Updates Section<\/li>\n<li>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle <\/li>\n<li>L2&nbsp;Future Vehicles&nbsp;Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the contract allowing for the development and construction phase of Solar Orbiter, the spacecraft has a target launch date of 2017. The launch vehicle of choice has not been named, although it was stated that NASA will contribute one full instrument, one sensor \u2013 and the launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday ESA awarded a very important contract in the space science domain to Astrium\u2019s spacecraft design and build facility at Stevenage in the UK,\u201d noted Prof. Alvaro Gim\u00e9nez Ca\u00f1ete, ESA Director of Science and Robotic Exploration and Miranda Mills, National Director \u2013 Earth Observation, Navigation and Science of Astrium, who also cited the importance of the UK anniversary for the signing of the contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is testimony to the important role that the UK has played in space flight since the launch of Ariel-1 in 1962 and it is testimony to the important role that the UK continues to play in space science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24155\" title=\"Z4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z423.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"332\">In addition, ten scientific instruments will be funded by the Member States of ESA and the United States, and developed by teams led by Principal Investigators from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted that Astrium has won Solar Orbiter, which reaffirms our leading position in science and exploration missions. Solar Orbiter is the second prime contract awarded by ESA to Astrium in less than six months,\u201d added Colin Paynter, Head of Astrium UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis contract builds on our unrivalled heritage in solar missions which includes the SOHO satellite which is still operational after 17 years providing valuable data for solar scientists across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new Solar Orbiter spacecraft will follow the heritage of the other European Sun explorers, including Europe\u2019s own PROBA-2, along with spacecraft that include NASA involvement, such as Helios 1 and 2, Ulysses, and SOHO, providing data towards the ambitions tasked by ESA\u2019s Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme.<\/p>\n<p>The primary goal for the Solar Orbiter will be to investigate the connections and the coupling between the Sun and the heliosphere, a huge bubble in space created by the solar wind that extends far beyond our Solar System. It is through this wind that solar activity can cause auroras and disrupt satellite-based communication.<\/p>\n<p>To get a close-up view of the Sun and to observe the solar wind before it becomes disrupted, Solar Orbiter will fly to within 45 million kilometres of the Sun, closer than Mercury.
