The NASA and United Space Alliance (USA) team is finishing up end-state safing activities on Atlantis, which is in OPF Bay 1, and Endeavour, which is in OPF Bay 2.<\/p>\n<p>T&amp;R Latest:<\/p>\n<p>Discovery\u2019s ferry flight captured both the media and public\u2019s attention, as the fleet leader took to the air one final time, on the back of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). With KSC now down to two orbiters, preparations are continuing on the next orbiter to leave, Endeavour.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Endeavour Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>Atlantis Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 T&amp;R Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also known as Orbiter Vehicle 105 (OV-105), Endeavour will be mirroring Discovery\u2019s final depature, except this time the duo will be heading west to California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now\u2026what we\u2019re working on is the TVC (Thrust Vector Control) actuators for 105,\u201d Greg Olive, Senior Aerospace Technician for USA, said in an interview with NASASpaceflight.com earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got the ammonia off of 105. The OMS system crossfeed lines were the last hypergolic contaminated thing\u2026and we\u2019re almost completely done with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24141\" title=\"Z3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z322.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"334\" height=\"321\">In addition to the safing work, Mr Olive \u2013 who participated in operations to mate Discovery to the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) for her trip to Washington, D.C \u2013 noted Endeavour\u2019s OMS pods, LP03 and RP04, were re-attached on March 20th and March 28th, respectively, and the ship\u2019s external airlock was removed from the forward end of the payload bay on April 19.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the work on the orbiters in the OPF bays, decommissioning work on the facilities themselves is also in progress. Once Endeavour is demated from the SCA at LAX, she will be prepared for a parade from the airport through the streets of Los Angeles to her new home at the California Science Center in Exposition Park.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24142\" title=\"Z4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z422.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"268\">Meanwhile, Atlantis\u2019 Reaction Control System (RCS) hardware, consisting of the FRC4 Forward RCS module and the LP04 and RP01 Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS), is still being decommissioned at a facility in White Sands, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The hardware was shipped to White Sands at the beginning of March, where the tanks and plumbing are being removed from the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Bart Pannullo, NASA Vehicle Manager for Space Shuttle Transition and Retirement processing, said in an interview with NASASpaceflight.com noted they are tracking a mid-May return of the gutted structures to KSC, where they will be re-installed on Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re supposed to come back on May 18th right now,\u201d Mr Pannullo confirmed. \u201cThat\u2019s the date we\u2019re tracking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24143\" title=\"Z314\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z3141.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"240\">Work on&nbsp;Atlantis includes one of the forward windows, window 3, being removed and replaced, as work also continues to prepare Atlantis for future museum display.<\/p>\n<p>Atlantis is currently scheduled to be towed in mid-November out of the OPF and down Kennedy Parkway to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where work is also in progress to prepare the new facility where the orbiter will be displayed beginning sometime in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>There still remains the possibility that Atlantis will have to vacate OPF-1 for a new customer later in the summer and go back to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Atlantis) may have to go there for storage at the end, (but) we\u2019re actually going to extend (Atlantis\u2019 stay in OPF-1) one additional month \u2013 we\u2019ve got that leverage,\u201d added Mr Pannullo. If Atlantis does have to go back to the VAB, \u201c(we\u2019re) tracking to end of July, first (part) of August for that.<\/p>\n<p>Click here for additional T&amp;R Articles: http:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/tag\/tr\/<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we turn the OPF over to another customer, we\u2019d put Atlantis in the VAB until Endeavour rolls to the MDD (Mate Demate Device). And right now that\u2019s a planned date of September 18th with a (ferry departure on) the 20th. We\u2019re still tracking to our (target) date and everything is going really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24144\" title=\"Z5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z514.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z514.jpg 353w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Z514-350x254.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\">The team is also continuing to remove Main Propulsion System (MPS) components from the orbiters for possible future use by the Space Launch System (SLS) program, while they configure the vehicles for display in their future museum homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now we\u2019re currently doing SLS hardware removals in the aft compartment of both vehicles \u2013 they\u2019re kind of paralleling each other right now, (and) we\u2019re finishing up the end safing,\u201d Mr Pannullo noted.<\/p>\n<p>While those activities were going on, workers in OPF-1 were working to disconnect and remove some of the large MPS feedlines from Atlantis. Removal of the liquid hydrogen feedline for main engine number three was completed on April 11.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;The large, twelve-inch diameter feedline was supported by a trolley hoist system that helped workers move the section of cryogenic plumbing out of Atlantis through the 50-2 access door on the starboard side of the orbiter\u2019s aft compartment (as seen in a series of images in a presentation acquired by L2 \u2013 Link).
