While this vehicle is set to ride into space in late 2013, the forward exploration path for Orion continues to be worked, with growing references pointing towards Crewed lunar surface missions.<\/p>\n<p>Orion Progress:<\/p>\n<p>Several Orions \u2013 otherwise known as the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) \u2013 are located across the country, as much as the main focus of attention is on the Ground Test Vehicle (GTA) stack at Lockheed Martin in Denver, and the Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1) in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>The latter is the \u201cflagship\u201d of the early Orions, under construction as a \u201ccrew capable\u201d vehicle which will be tested via launch, several orbits around the planet, followed by entry and splashdown.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21522\" title=\"A333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/A3331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"244\">This test \u2013 which will see Orion lofted into space via a Delta IV-H launch vehicle \u2013 was previously known as the Orion Flight Test-1 (OFT-1), prior to changing call signs to EFT-1 to represent the vehicle\u2019s primary role as an exploration vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>MAF, better known for constructing the giant External Tanks (ETs) for the Space Shuttle, are charged with welding the sections of the Orion EFT-1 vehicle, which began in September. Engineers are now around a third way through the cone section welds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThird and fourth welds on the cone section of the Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1) vehicle were completed on October 4th at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana,\u201d noted L2 Orion notes. \u201cThe welded structure now contains two window panels and 3 longerons. A specific article will follow when further information is available.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21519\" title=\"B3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/B34.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"331\">Over in Denver, the Orion GTV and Launch Abort System (LAS) \u2013 which together make up the sleek-looking Orion GTA \u2013 is continuing to be put through acoustic testing.<\/p>\n<p>Currently returned to the High Bay at the Waterton Facility, the stack will gain panels to simulate the Service Module (SM) \u2013 a key part of the vehicle which continues to undergo trades, which may include a role for Europe\u2019s ATV propulsion hardware.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ground Test Vehicle (GTV) and Launch Abort System (LAS) Ground Test Vehicle (GTA) stack was moved from the acoustic test chamber to the high bay floor at the Lockheed Martin Waterton facility in Denver, Colorado,\u201d added the L2 Orion notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the next two weeks Service Module simulator panels will be attached to the stack and it will be returned to the acoustic test chamber for additional tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The notes also added that Thermal Protection System (TPS) testing for Orion is taking place, with a cold temperature test showing some unspecified anomalies, which are being assessed.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Orion Forum Section<\/li>\n<li>L2 Orion\/Future Spacecraft Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThermal Protection System team conducted cold temperature tests between -25 F and -50 F to test for separation at the bond line. While the test was successful and separation at the bond line did not occur, anomalies were observed and engineers are now assessing the results in detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orion\u2019s TPS will be put through far higher stresses when compared to LEO vehicles, with as much as twice the energy expected for Orion\u2019s entry from a Beyond Earth Orbit (BEO) mission.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21517\" title=\"o5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/o5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/o5.jpg 352w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/o5-350x236.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\">Valuable entry data was gained during shuttle Discovery\u2019s final missions, which included a Catalytic Coating applied to two tiles in the turbulent heating wedge on the belly of the orbiter, appearing as two green stripes across the tiles.<\/p>\n<p>A version of the coating was first flown on STS-2, 3 and 5, as part of a laminar\/catalytic flight test effort. However, the documentation wasn\u2019t maintained, leading to the Orion request for help from the flagship orbiter.<\/p>\n<p>Several Detailed Test Objectives (DTOs) into understanding the entry heating performance of a fully catalytic (CC-2) coated tile located downstream of an in-built protuberance \u2013 designed for Mach 18 Boundary Layer Transition \u2013 were achieved by Discovery during the last few years of her service.<\/p>\n<p>In tandem with the major drive towards the first flight into space for Orion, there has been a notable increase in activity this year \u2013 following the reversal of the FY2011 budget proposal, which cancelled Orion, by the 2010 Authorization Act, along with the long-awaited announcement to confirm the configuration of the SLS as Orion\u2019s launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21518\" title=\"B2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/B24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/B24.jpg 351w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/B24-180x110.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\">Although Orion Parachute tests have been conducted since 2007 \u2013 with 20 drop tests in total \u2013 a late September test marked the first in a series of flight-like parachute simulations \u2013 the closest simulation so far to what the actual Orion parachute landing phase will be during a return from space.<\/p>\n<p>The drop tests at the US Army\u2019s Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona utilized a C-130 aircraft releasing the drop-test article that mimicked the Orion parachute compartment at an altitude of 25,000 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Once airborne, two drogue chutes were deployed at an altitude of 19,000 feet, followed by three pilot parachutes, which then deployed three main landing parachutes.
