{"id":40756,"date":"2010-06-11T01:07:37","date_gmt":"2010-06-10T17:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/sts-133-shuttle-managers-review-discoverys-flight-hardware-and-payload\/"},"modified":"2010-06-11T01:07:37","modified_gmt":"2010-06-10T17:07:37","slug":"sts-133-shuttle-managers-review-discoverys-flight-hardware-and-payload","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/sts-133-shuttle-managers-review-discoverys-flight-hardware-and-payload\/","title":{"rendered":"STS-133: Shuttle managers review Discovery\u2019s flight hardware and payload"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As mission planning efforts continue for Space Shuttle Discovery\u2019s STS-133\/ULF-5 flight to the International Space Station later this year, flight designers and mission managers have conducted a thorough review of all aspects of Discovery\u2019s hardware and payload at the recently-completed Launch Site Flow Review (LSFR) in May.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:<\/p>\n<p>At the June 10 Program Requirements Control Board (PRCB) meeting, managers approved the Change Request to extend STS-133 to a 11+1+2 days mission, with the addition of two EVAs. The Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) originally manifested for installation on Endeavour have been re-manifested to Discovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngine set previously baselined for STS-134 on 18-March-2010 re-manifested to STS-133 per Level II Change Request,\u201d notes the STS-133 LSFR presentation \u2013 available for download on L2.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14958\" title=\"A3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/A37.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"244\">Under the current manifest, Discovery will now fly with SSME 2048 in the Engine 1 position, SSME 2044 in the Engine 2 slot, and SSME 2058 in the Engine 3 location.<\/p>\n<p>All of these engines underwent their last \u201chot-fire\u201d during the launch of Atlantis and the STS-129 mission on November 16, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this hardware, the 39th flight of orbiter Discovery will use OMS pods LP01 (Left Pod 01) and RP03 (Right Pod 03), Operation Software (OI)-34, four (4) Cryo tank sets (with prop offload), and five (5) Gaseous Nitrogen tanks (full prop). Discovery will also carry a partial prop load in her FRCS (Forward Reaction Control System) and a full prop load for her ARCS (Aft RCS) and OMS Pods.<\/p>\n<p>Mission Specific Payloads and Close Clearances:<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the aforementioned hardware, Discovery\u2019s primary payload on the STS-133\/ULF-5 mission will be the ELC-4 (Express Logistics Carrier -4) pallet and the newly modified MPLM (Multi-Purpose Logistics Module) Leonardo \u2013 now called the Permanent Multi-purpose Module (PMM) Leonardo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14959\" title=\"A4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/A48.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"233\">The primary payload for ELC-4 will be the Heat Rejection System Radiator (HRSR) Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU). Currently, HRSR Flight Support Equipment installation and alignment operations are complete.<\/p>\n<p>HRSR cable harness testing is underway, as is Flight ExPRESS Carrier Avionics (ExPCA) standalone testing.<\/p>\n<p>The HRSR will be installation onto ELC-4 for flight later this month.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of Payload Bay support, four (4) active longeron latches, two passive longeron latches, and one active keel latch will be used to berth ELC-4 into Discovery for launch.<\/p>\n<p>As for Leonardo, \u201cSTS-131\/19A destow\/deintegration operations are complete\u201d and TAS-I modifications are in work.<\/p>\n<p>All external Multi-Layer Insulation blankets and MDPSs have been removed from Leonardo and the CBM (Common Berthing Mechanism) seals have been replaced at this time.<\/p>\n<p>A final cargo manifest \u201cbench review\u201d took place on May 19, after the compilation of the LSFR. Therefore, at the time of the LSFR, the PMM Leonardo was projected to have a launch weight of 21,555 lbs \u2013 a weight classification of \u201cheavy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14960\" title=\"A5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/A52.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"215\">For the Discovery\u2019s Payload Bay support of PMM Leonardo, this will be the first flight of an MPLM\/PMM in the manifested Payload Bay position.<\/p>\n<p>To berth the PMM Leonardo to Discovery\u2019s Payload Bay, four (4) active longeron latches and one active keel latch will be used.<\/p>\n<p>A ROEU (Remotely Operated Electrical Umbilical) will be used to provide \u201c28V heater power, 124V for temp and pressure checks, and 1,553 for command\/telemetry,\u201d notes the LSFR presentation.<\/p>\n<p>With the primary payloads and their Payload Bay locations identified, a \u201cpayload close clearance\u201d review was performed and identified three (3) areas of concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe following Close Clearance areas have been identified: 1. ELC aft port and starboard scuff plates to MPM; 2. PMM to top centerline latches; 3. ASI (Italian Space Agency) flag on the PMM to Payload Bay sidewall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chit #6601 has already been developed for measurements of the ELC aft port and starboard scuff plates. All other measurements will have to be conducted at the launch pad after the payload has been installed into Discovery\u2019s Payload Bay for launch.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, preparations are also underway on the various middeck payloads Discovery will carry to the ISS during STS-133. Among these payloads are a GLACIER unit, Commercial Biomedical Testing Modules 1 &amp; 2, and two Mouse Immunology (MI) Animal Enclosure Modules.<\/p>\n<p>Weight Analyses and Potential Mission Hardware:<\/p>\n<p>With these payloads, Discovery\u2019s weight analyses show that her Nominal case, RTLS (Return To Launch Site) abort case, TAL (Trans-oceanic Abort Landing) case, and AOA (Abort Once Around) case landings are all within weight limits, with RTLS including a 25-second FRCS propellant dump and TAL including a 60-second FRCS propellant dump.<\/p>\n<p>STS-133 Specific Articles: http:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/tag\/sts-133\/<\/p>\n<p>However, one of Discovery\u2019s landing case weight analyses did show a violation of landing weight criteria. For a Contingency Return case, Discovery\u2019s weight would be 2,056lbs over the 233,000lbs limit.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, while payload upmass is of paramount importance on the STS-133\/ULF5 flight, Discovery\u2019s aft ballast boxes are currently manifested to fly \u201cempty\u201d during the mission. While these boxes add just over 100-lbs of weight to Discovery, the boxes cannot be removed at this time due to continued uncertainty in the payload manifest for STS-133.<\/p>\n<p>In relation to these ballast boxes, NASA managers met earlier this month to discuss whether or not to add a LMC (Lightweight Multipurpose support structure Carrier) to Discovery\u2019s payload bay to support either the return of a Nitrogen Tank Assembly or a Light Weight Adapter Plate Assembly (LWAPA) to Earth from the ISS at the end of the 133 mission.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made via a June 10, 2010 PRCB meeting not to manifest the LMC on STS-133 and not to return the Nitrogen Tank Assembly from ISS.As such, the payload bay support bridges and latches currently installed (from the STS-131 mission) to support the LMC will be removed to enable further weight reduction of Discovery \u2013 the heaviest of the remaining three orbiters.<\/p>\n<p>However, the PRCB did approve the return of the LWAPA.
