Astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Clay Anderson performed all of the EVA tasks, placing them in a good stance for the remaining two EVAs for this flight. Meanwhile, the Damage Assessment Team (DAT) have cleared Discovery\u2019s TPS (Thermal Protection System)&nbsp;from any requirement of a Focused Inspection.<\/p>\n<p>EVA -1 Preview:<\/p>\n<p>The main focus for the Discovery\/ISS crew today will be the execution of the first EVA for the STS-131\/19A flight as well as the continuation of internal supply transfers to and from Discovery\u2019s middeck and the MPLM Leonardo.<\/p>\n<p>Waking up at 8:51 p.m. EDT (April 8), Discovery and the ISS crew got right to work with final preparations for&nbsp;Flight Day&nbsp;5\u2019s&nbsp;spacewalk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>STS-131 LIVE UPDATES<\/li>\n<li>L2 STS-131 Special Section<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>First up was the repressurization of the Quest Airlock from its overnight pressurization (10.2 psi) for EV crewmember campout operations to nominal Earth sea-level for a much-needed hygiene break for Rick Mastracchio and Clay Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>Following that short break, Mastracchio and Anderson re-entered the Quest Airlock and the airlock was once again depressurized to 10.2 psi.<\/p>\n<p>MPLM transfers are currently scheduled to pick up at 11:11 p.m. EDT (April 8th) while Rick and Clay are donning their respective EMUs (Extra-vehicular Mobility Units \u2013 spacesuits).<\/p>\n<p>Final spacesuit purges are set to begin just after mid-night (12:06 a.m. EDT) April 9, followed by Spacesuit prebreathe activities at 12:21 a.m. EDT.<\/p>\n<p>Spaceflight<path d=\"M7.59009 18.59L9.00009 20L17.0001 12L9.00009 4L7.59009 5.41L14.1701 12\" style=\"animation: initial !important; transform: initial !important; vertical-align: initial !important; visibility: inherit !important;\"><\/path>\n<p>     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14202\" title=\"A3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A38.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"253\">Per the timeline (which EV crews on numerous recent missions have worked well ahead of), complete Airlock depressurization that began at 1:11 a.m. EDT with Rick and Clay taking their spacesuits to battery power at 1:31 a.m. \u2013 officially beginning the EVA.<\/p>\n<p>First up on the EVA-1 timeline was the retrieval of the FBG by Rick Mastracchio while Clay Anderson released the currently-attached-to-the-S1-truss ATA\u2019s (Ammonia Tank Assembly\u2019s) Fluid Quick Disconnect.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the two astronauts transversed into Discovery\u2019s Payload Bay (Rick first followed by Clay 30-minutes later) and performed a series of release and handoff preparations for the new ATA that rode uphill on Discovery.<\/p>\n<p>The new ATA was released from its payload carrier and handed off to the SSRMS (Space Station Remote Manipulator System \u2013 robot arm).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14203\" title=\"A4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A47.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"230\">Following this handoff, Rick Mastracchio translated to the JAXA Kibo module\u2019s exposure facility and retrieve the JEM Seed experiment while Clay remained in Discovery\u2019s Payload Bay performing cleanup duties following the ATA release and handoff.<\/p>\n<p>Next, Rick and Clay retrieved and installed the ABG before moving to the S0 truss of the ISS to Remove and Replace a Rate Gyro Assembly. Due to a clearance issue, Rick had to remove the near-by TERA, in order to free the RGA.<\/p>\n<p>After that, Clay was to translate out to the P6 truss \u2013 joined one hour later by Rick \u2013 to perform the final scheduled task of the EVA: \u201cP6 battery preps.\u201d However, that was deleted and replaced with a task for Clay to work on several P clamps.<\/p>\n<p>Following the completion of tasks, Rick and Clay performed EVA-1 cleanup activities before ingressing the Quest Airlock about 6.5hours after the start of the EVA.<\/p>\n<p>The crew will then spend the remainder of the Flight Day performing Post-EVA servicing operations, MPLM transfers, and preparing for a much deserved sleep period.<\/p>\n<p>STS-131 Specific Articles: http:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/tag\/sts-131\/<\/p>\n<p>Damage Assessment Team FD-3 Report:<\/p>\n<p>Following a stunning liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center on Monday morning at 06:21:25 EDT, veteran orbiter Discovery reached Low Earth Orbit with very, very few battle scars to her TPS (Thermal Protection System) \u2013 aided in large part to exceptional performance of ET-135 (External Tank #135), which provided approximately 535,000 gallons of Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen to Discovery\u2019s three SSMEs (Space Shuttle Main Engines) during ascent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14205\" title=\"A5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A55.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"235\">In all, the DAT (Damage Assessment Team) has been able to clear several areas of Discovery TPS for reentry already \u2013 despite limited downlink capability with the vehicle prior to docking with the ISS Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The cleared TPS areas include the Starboard T0 umbilical plates and surrounding TPS, the Port and Starboard OMS (Orbital Maneuvering System) Pod \u201cblack tile regions,\u201d all upper and lower LESS Carrier Panel locations, and the lower surfaces of Discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, all regions of Discovery\u2019s TPS that would be inaccessible for a Focused Inspection with the MPLM Leonardo berthed to the ISS have been cleared of the need for a Focused Inspection.<\/p>\n<p>Areas still requiring DAT review include the Port and Starboard Forward Fuselage, the Port T0 umbilical plate and surround TPS, the remaining OMS Pod regions (white TPS tiles and TPS blankets), the \u201cLeading Edge of the VERT,\u201d and the ET umbilical doors for assurance of proper door closure and sealing for reentry.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, there are only three (3) areas of Discovery\u2019s TPS currently under investigation by the DAT: the Rudder Speed Brake, the Forward Reaction Control System pod, and one tile adjacent to an ET umbilical door.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14206\" title=\"A6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A65.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"223\">The first, and primary area of concentration for the DAT is the loss of a TPS tile on Discovery\u2019s Left Hand (LH) Rudder Speed Brake (RSB) ~42-seconds after liftoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRSB TPS Liberation D-131-RPM-410-001: Debris event during accent at 42sec MET from port upper RSB trailing edge,\u201d notes the FD-3 DAT summary.<\/p>\n<p>Based on ascent imagery assets, a portion of one TPS tile on the trailing edge of the LH RSB was seen breaking away and harmlessly falling aft of the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>On orbit imagery of Discovery\u2019s RSB during the R-bar Pitch Maneuver (RPM), performed about one hour prior to docking with the ISS, confirmed what is believed to be only a partial tile loss and charring on the AFT edge of nearby vehicle structure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisible charring along the AFT edge and visible signs of SIP and densification layer on sidewall,\u201d notes the initial summary analysis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14207\" title=\"A7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A73.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"236\">While initial RPM photography captured by crewmembers onboard the ISS confirmed the apparent partial tile loss in the area, additional photographs that will yield more information on the current state of this area of Discovery had not yet been reviewed\/analyzed at the time of the FD-3 DAT summary publication.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, \u201cDamage is located on the trailing edge of the LH Upper Rudder Speed Brake Panel Assembly,\u201d notes the summary.<\/p>\n<p>The RSB panels themselves are an aluminum honeycomb structure attached to spars and ribs that contain a \u201cfull depth aluminum honeycomb trailing edge wedge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This trailing edge wedge is 9-inches wide with a variable depth along the XT axes. Facesheet thickness in the area is 0.012-inches.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14209\" title=\"A9\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A92.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"227\">TPS tiles in this area extend ~1.9-inches \u201cover the trailing edge wedge [and] cover approximately half of full depth of honeycomb STR,\u201d notes the summary presentation.<\/p>\n<p>The tile in question was 0.68-inches thick at centroid (the point in a system of bodies or an extended body at which the mass of the system may be considered to be concentrated and at which external forces may be considered to be applied).<\/p>\n<p>The tile was originally installed onto Discovery\u2019s RSB in November 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, ascent\/descent Aeroheating environments have been provided to the DAT and thermal model development is in work.<\/p>\n<p>Stress and structural assessments will be performed after the thermal assessments are complete. Surround structural margins and adjacent TPS impacts are still being worked at this time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14208\" title=\"A8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A82.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"181\">The second TPS damage location is on the FRCS (Forward Reaction Control System) pod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFRCS Protrusion D-131-RPM-560-001: Unknown protrusion, assumed AMES Gap Filler,\u201d notes the summary presentation.<\/p>\n<p>The protrusion is estimated at 1.2-inches in height, though additional inspection video and photos from ISS had not yet been reviewed at the time of the summary\u2019s publication.<\/p>\n<p>The final TPS area of note is along the port ET umbilical door perimeter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14210\" title=\"A11\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/A112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"218\">The damage is located adjacent to the ET door thermal barrier seal but is contained to the tile itself and does not proceed to the thermal barrier.<\/p>\n<p>The damaged tile itself is 12 lbs in weight, 1.21-inches thick, and was installed in June 2004 ahead of Return To Flight operations.<\/p>\n<p>The damage is estimated at 1.21-inches in length and 0.5-inches in width (accurate to 0.15-inches based imagery assets).<\/p>\n<p>The summary presentation notes that \u201cET door damage does not compromise the ET Door thermal barrier seal and previous assessments show large thermal\/structural margins\u201d in that area.<\/p>\n<p>In all, Discovery\u2019s TPS is in good shape and no Focused Inspection is required on any part of the vehicle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flight Day 5 (FD-5) for STS-131 has seen the completion of&nbsp;the first of three scheduled EVAs (Spacewalks) of the mission.
