{"id":40978,"date":"2009-09-29T21:23:52","date_gmt":"2009-09-29T13:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/constellation-reviews-progress-of-lids-docking-system-for-orion\/"},"modified":"2009-09-29T21:23:52","modified_gmt":"2009-09-29T13:23:52","slug":"constellation-reviews-progress-of-lids-docking-system-for-orion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/constellation-reviews-progress-of-lids-docking-system-for-orion\/","title":{"rendered":"Constellation Reviews Progress of LIDS Docking System for Orion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Constellation Program (CxP) prepares for the test flight of Ares I-X \u2013 the rocket modelled on the vehicle that will launch Orion sometime in the next decade \u2013 in less than one month, a design review of the Low Impact Docking System (LIDS) that Orion will use to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) has been completed, revealing the forward progress that has been made by engineers.<\/p>\n<p>LIDS Open Risks Assessments:<\/p>\n<p>For NASA and Orion, the LIDS system represents a new design in orbital docking mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLIDS: Project Description: The Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) LIDS Government Flown Equipment (GFE) project is responsible for the design, development, fabrication, qualification, and delivery of the Cx\/CEV docking system to support Lockheed Martin Qualification, the first four Orion flights, and the passive LIDS interface adapter for ISS,\u201d notes the LIDS presentation \u2013 available for download on L2.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"widget-title penci-border-arrow\">See Also<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Constellation Forum&nbsp;Sections<\/li>\n<li>L2 Ares\/Orion Sections<\/li>\n<li>Click here to Join L2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This passive LIDS interface adapter (ATLAS) will be developed by the ISS Program \u2013 with delivery to the ISS via Japan\u2019s HTV expected in 2013 or 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the Orion LIDS system will compose of a Soft Capture and Hard Capture System. These systems will include \u201cActive Load Sensing with three inward facing petals\u201d and a \u201ctunnel with 12 internal radial active latches, dynamic interface seals, power\/data transfer umbilicals, and MMOD shields,\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this review of the LIDS system, the Constellation Program has identified several risk factors for LIDS. This creates a potential issue with heater control due to \u201ccongestion\u201d at the PDU interface.<\/p>\n<p>The previous design of the LIDS system had been streamlined into a two box system that fit the available space in the Orion capsule.<\/p>\n<p>However, placing the heater controls in the PDUs would require the addition of two boxes for the LIDS system. These additions would cost, time, and mass to the finalized design of the Orion Capsule.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, this revision of the Orion electrical system to a PDU design forced another change to the Orion to LIDS communication system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11945\" title=\"A3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/A315.jpg\" alt=\"A3\" width=\"237\" height=\"179\">\u201cChange guarantees that the correct serial communications will not be in the LIDS development control boxes (BB) in time for EDU 58 testing and will be a delta between EDU and flight configuration and testing,\u201d notes the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>This change has already been incorporated into flow development planning for Orion and Lockheed Martin has been solicited for their input into the design change as well as when sufficient hardware will be available for incorporation into the development and testing flow.<\/p>\n<p>Also, following from the change to a PDU design, is the ongoing evaluation and revision to Orion\u2019s overall electrical architecture.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to save\/reduce as much weight as possible while still maintaining positive safety margins, Lockheed Martin is \u201cassessing a range of options, from no change to the current LIDS umbilicals to using two #12 wires to replace a single #8 wire, to using only a single #12 wire per power umbilical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the LIDS project is in the process of releasing specifications in order to procure the needed power umbilicals. This is considered a \u201clong lead procurement\u201d by the industry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11946\" title=\"A4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/A413.jpg\" alt=\"A4\" width=\"279\" height=\"213\">The second major open item discussed in the presentation relates to undocking and separation concerns, which was found during the Orion Vehicle Engineering Integration Working Group (OVEIWG) review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring OVEIWG, LIDS separation system was removed to save mass by accounting for vehicle thrusting,\u201d notes the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>However, a \u201csmall spring plunger\u201d was kept in the design to in order to separate a LIDS from a LIDS while not inducing any relative motion between the two vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>An analysis performed by Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&amp;C) shows that for a nominal Orion undocking, there will need to be space between the two vehicles before separation thrusting can begin \u2013 not unlike the space that must be present between the Shuttle and ISS during undocking operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project dynamics team has provided a first assessment of the zero-rate effects of releasing Orion from ISS \u2013 which indicates we currently do not meet the proposed requirement,\u201d notes the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>The project dynamics team is conducting analyses on whether or not the LIDS soft capture mechanism is capable of providing the \u201cpushoff\u201d necessary to separate Orion and ISS to the distance necessary to begin separation thrusting.<\/p>\n<p>The team is also considering adding several soft springs in an effort to get as much momentum as possible in a LIDS passive configuration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11947\" title=\"A5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/A57.jpg\" alt=\"A5\" width=\"227\" height=\"234\">Furthermore \u2013 and an unsurprising situation for Orion \u2013 is the risk for increased mass for the LIDS system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLIDS is at risk for increased mass due to changing Orion launch, ascent, and abort loads,\u201d notes the LIDS presentation.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a static test firing of the Launch Abort System (LAS) revealed that acoustic levels for LAS were higher than predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Once the physical test data is integrated into the analysis, higher loads for LIDS are expected.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the requirement for On-orbit verification of redundant seals has been added to the requirements for LIDS; however, the technical community is split on whether or not this is truly necessary.<\/p>\n<p>The current design of LIDS does not support this kind of testing.
