{"id":41009,"date":"2009-08-28T22:59:18","date_gmt":"2009-08-28T14:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/discovery-launches-after-smooth-countdown\/"},"modified":"2009-08-28T22:59:18","modified_gmt":"2009-08-28T14:59:18","slug":"discovery-launches-after-smooth-countdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/discovery-launches-after-smooth-countdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery launches after smooth countdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the clearance of the PV12 Inboard LH2 Fill and Drain Valve issue &nbsp;by the Mission Management Team (MMT) \u2013 which ironically performed as planned during tanking \u2013&nbsp;Shuttle Discovery enjoyed a super smooth countdown and launch, as she takes aim on the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>STS-128 countdown:<\/p>\n<p>Technically an extension of attempt 3 for STS-128, Discovery\u2019s countdown was held for less than 24 hours in the flow, to allow for additional data gathering on the valve issue \u2013 mainly relating to flight rationale being signed by the engineering teams.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"neptec\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/neptec.jpg\" alt=\"neptec\" width=\"125\" height=\"125\">Out at the pad, the Discovery behaved well, as she patiently remains sat at Pad 39A for her midnight trip to the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrbiter: OV-103 \/ ET-132 \/ BI-139\/ RSRM 107 (Pad A): S0007 Launch Countdown Scrub Turnaround operations continue. The launch team is continuing to work towards an attempt on Friday, August 28th at 2354L (in plane 2359L),\u201d noted Friday processing information on L2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cS0007.300 LCD Scrub Turnaround: Tyvek cover R&amp;R complete. FCS stow is complete. RSS (Rotating Service Structure) retract \u2013 following Tyvek cover R&amp;R) to Park position first motion at 0600L. A high temp reading on Fuel Cell 2 was also cleared.<\/p>\n<p>PV12 Latest:<\/p>\n<p>Managers were close to approving a go for launch on Thursday \u2013 which would have resulted in an early Friday morning T-0 \u2013 before time constraints led to MMT manager Mike Moses making the correct call to give the teams more time via a one day slip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe STS-128 Launch attempt has been cancelled (Friday morning attempt) to allow the team additional time to review valve cycle timing data and develop additional rationale for flight,\u201d noted one MMT memo announcing the decision. \u201cWill be a 7:00 pm CDT OPO (Orbiter Project Office) meeting to discuss the status of the data review and flight rationale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That OPO meeting concluded with positive results, which in turn made up the bulk of the discussions at the MMT meeting at KSC, which was conducted at noon local time. That resulted in the clearance for Discovery to proceed to launch.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11467\" title=\"AA2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/AA2.jpg\" alt=\"AA2\" width=\"278\" height=\"188\">\u201cIPR 77 LH2 In-Board Fill\/Drain PV12 update: The MMT will meet today at 1200L to review the LCC (Launch Commit Criteria) Deviation Criteria and give GO\/NO GO for launch,\u201d added Friday morning information. \u201cThe Tanking Weather briefing will follow at 1400L.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additional technical overviews were created for the MMT, all of which backed up the claims that the valve appears to be operating nominally, even if the Valve Position Indicator (VPI) appears to be intermittent. This remained the most challenging element of the discussions, as the VPI failed to repeat the problem during the five test cycles earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSTS-128 MPS LH2 Inboard Fill and Drain Valve Anomaly: Anomaly Description: On 8\/25\/09 at GMT 212307 during LH2 transition to Reduced Fast Fill (RFF) the MPS LH2 Inboard fill and Drain Valve (PV12) was commanded to the closed Position. The closed Position micro switch indication (V41X1410X1) did not illuminate. Valve could not be verified closed,\u201d noted additional MMT documentation on L2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLCC MPS-04 required this indication illuminate for at least 1 sample to verify the valve successfully transitioned to the closed position. These valves have had a failure history of driver galling which can result in a failure of the valve. The potential for incipient failure in this mode is identified through the inability to verify the valve has completed a cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this has occurred any further cycling of the valve can further degrade the ability to control the valve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, despite the VPI indication, all other data pointed towards the valve performing as required \u2013 this was backed up by documentation that compared the surrounding parameters with that of STS-119\u2019s PV12 valve, which engineers know had a nominal operation during tanking. This is an important element, as a damaged valve would be highly undesirable for Discovery during Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) ignition and ascent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11466\" title=\"AA1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/AA1.jpg\" alt=\"AA1\" width=\"284\" height=\"203\">\u201cClosed cycle at LH2 RFF. Initial move time Closed (IMTC, Time from op pwr off to op pos off): 4.410s. Clsd cycle Sig to Sw (Op pwr off to Cl pos on): n\/a. Clsd sw to sw (Op pos off to Cl pos on): n\/a. MPS 750 Reg resp: 19 psid. Aft Helium Delta: 645ppm\/28s. Manif. Disc Temp Delta: 1.2 deg,\u201d added a highly technical element of the MMT documentation, outlining the data from STS-128\u2019s tanking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA comparison was then made against the data generated when PV12 was successfully cycled to the closed position at LH2 RFF for STS-119: Closed cycle at LH2 RFF. Initial move time Closed (IMTC, Time from op pwr off to op pos off): 4.411s. Clsd cycle Sig to Sw (Op pwr off to Cl pos on): 8.801. Clsd sw to sw (Op pos off to Cl pos on): 4.491. MPS 750 Reg resp: 20 psid. Aft Helium Delta: 534 ppm\/40s. Manif. Disc Temp Delta: 1.021 deg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the discussions have been related to providing a waiver to the MPS-04 LCC, had the VPI once again prove to be troublesome \u2013 while checks are made on the other the parameters that indicate they do have nominal performance from the valve.&nbsp; In the end, nominal performance of the valve and the VPI were observed during the countdown.<\/p>\n<p>Other forms of \u201cscreening\u201d during the tanking were also available to managers, with the aim to provide parameters that could have&nbsp;helped show if the valve was enjoying a nominal performance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11468\" title=\"AA3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/AA3.jpg\" alt=\"AA3\" width=\"341\" height=\"220\">\u201cThe capability exist to gather some additional PV12 Closure screening during the upcoming loading\u2026the first option requires no additional work but does provide limited time to analyze the data, the second option requires additional work but provides the data early in the count,\u201d added a KSC Engineering presentation to the MMT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1) The Orbiter Inlet Press\/Temp Profile during Terminal Count provides an opportunity to gather data (a pressurized Leak Check) on PV12\/PV13 as the Temp increases to OSH and the Pressure decays. The screening time is limited to the time between PV13\u2019s closure and PV11\u2019s closure (~1m14s).<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2) Additionally an LH2 Revert during the early part of Replenish would provide similar screening (minus the Flight Pressurization). Granted that a Revert is not without it\u2019s risks but it would provide this data early in the count.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current LCC for PV22 MPS-12 uses a 1 of 2 for the Close Indicator OR OSH on the Bleed Temp which is consistent with the screening of #1 above\u2026it is understood that this screening does not quantify any supposed leakage that may exist (in the absence of a PV12 Close indicator) but could be used for as additional confidence that the valve closure is in family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MMT opted for a plan where the valve would have been cycled \u2013 twice&nbsp;\u2013 to attempt to confirm its status, had the VPI repeat its condition during tanking.
