The team of engineers working on safing the orbiter ahead of her mating with the SCA have also reported very little damage to her Thermal Protection System (TPS).<\/p>\n<p>Atlantis post flight:<\/p>\n<p>Following her highly successful mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, Atlantis was towed off runway 22 at the Californian facility and taken to the Mate\/Demate Device (MDD), which cares for the orbiter\u2019s during their stay at Dryden, and also provides the cranes to lift the orbiter on top of the modified 747 SCA \u2013 which is currently scheduled for completion on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPost Landing Ops completed: Total downgrade and handover were completed at 1256 local. Power to MPUs (Main Power Units) was lost so Orbiter powered down. EASC (DFRC support) is working the problem, which appears to be a Circuit Board issue. Overall the vehicle looked good. Approximately 10 tiles had damages greater than 1.0 inch. (six were in the right hand chine cluster). There were no protruding Ames gap fillers identified,\u201d noted the TPS assessment presentation on L2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMidbody: Tile damage on right chine area appeared unchanged relative to on-orbit photos. Maximum damage depth was 0.1\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other item of interest related to RCC (Reinforced Carbon Carbon) panel 11R, following an indication \u2013 or trigger \u2013 via the WLE IDS (Wing Leading Edge Impact Detection System) of an impact on the surface of the panel. However, post landing photographs show no sign of an impact, or damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisual inspection of RCC Panel 11R (which had registered an on-obit impact indication) revealed no evidence of damage,\u201d added the assessment presentation, which leads to the possibility the indication was caused by what is known as a \u201cghost trigger\u201d, where the slightest movement of orbiter hardware on orbit can register on the ultra sensitive system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10109\" title=\"a318\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/a318.jpg\" alt=\"a318\" width=\"292\" height=\"189\">Other areas of \u2018damage\u2019 were deemed as minor and not unusual, such as slight tears in the thermal barriers on the landing gear doors, possibly caused when the landing gear was lowered just prior to landing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMLGD (Main Landing Gear Door) left hand thermal barrier at the forward outboard corner had torn outer sleeving approx four inches long. Inner portion of thermal barrier was peeled back. NLGD (Nose Landing Gear Door) thermal barrier on right side had loose\/broken threads between barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNLGD thermal barrier on the right side approx 2\/3 back had several minor discolorations (potential flow paths) that extended onto the pressure seal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAft Right hand ET (External Tank) door, forward thermal barrier, had signs of minor flow originating at the center of the door,\u201d the assessment presentation continued. \u201cUnderlying Koropon was also discolored. Corresponding discoloration was seen on the door side fingers and tiles. Flow appeared to start at the center of the door and travel outboard. No environmental seal damage was observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeft hand ET door tile had damage approx 1.5 x 0.5 x 0.5\u201d Area around LH OMS pod missing gap filler, observed on-orbit, appeared to be unchanged visually from the ground. Dome heat shield blankets had no tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo piano key tiles were observed broken, however one tile under the left engine was deflected downward. Vertical tail tile, just above the rudder speed brake, had a damage approx 2\u201d x 2\u201d. Depth unknown.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-10110\" title=\"a49\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/a49.jpg\" alt=\"a49\" width=\"305\" height=\"199\">One unusual area of interest was found on RCC Panel 7R, with a red\/orange residue clearly seen on one post landing photograph. It is not know where the residue originated from, with no sign of work being carried out on the panel during pre-launch processing.<\/p>\n<p>The heat of re-entry is understood to have caused the marking to appear \u2013 potentially caused by a piece of tape that may have been applied to the panel at some point during it\u2019s pre-launch flow \u2013 although it held no threat to the integrity of the panel during the return back to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRCC Panel 7R had red\/orange residue near the apex, approx 4\u201d long,\u201d noted the assessment presentation, which listed several other area of interest, all deemed as minor.<\/p>\n<p>Now the mission is complete, managers have been looking over the IFA (In Flight Anomaly) review presentations (12 available on L2), as they gear up towards the next mission, STS-127, which is scheduled to launch on June 13. However, for now, the shuttle team have been congratulating key members of the flight control room for their fine work on the hugely successful mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe long awaited Servicing Mission 4 is now complete and Hubble has a whole new set of instruments to impress the world,\u201d noted flight control team (MOD), on Tuesday\u2019s 8th Floor News memo (L2). \u201cThis mission went extremely well from beginning to end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorm Knight and his ascent team set the tone on launch day.
