{"id":41262,"date":"2008-11-15T17:49:04","date_gmt":"2008-11-15T09:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/fd2-inspections-completed-as-endeavour-pursues-iss-for-sunday-docking\/"},"modified":"2008-11-15T17:49:04","modified_gmt":"2008-11-15T09:49:04","slug":"fd2-inspections-completed-as-endeavour-pursues-iss-for-sunday-docking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/fd2-inspections-completed-as-endeavour-pursues-iss-for-sunday-docking\/","title":{"rendered":"FD2 inspections completed as Endeavour pursues ISS for Sunday docking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Endeavour continues to close the distance between herself and the International Space Station (ISS),&nbsp;as Flight Day 2 activities \u2013 focusing mainly on the Orbiter Boom Sensor System (OBSS) scans of the orbiter\u2019s Thermal Protection System (TPS) \u2013 have been concluded.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Flight Day 2\u2019s activities included rendezvous preparations for docking with the ISS, involving centerline camera installation, EMU spacesuit checkouts, docking ring extension and rendezvous tools checkout. However, the primary focus of FD2 has been the inspections of Endeavour\u2019s TPS.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluations into Endeavour\u2019s ascent have been continuing since her launch from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) on Friday, with a team of engineers on the ground trawling through vast amounts of data and imagery. So far, only one or two items of interest are being looked at, which will be cross referenced with the TPS scan data.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7969\" style=\"black 5px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/a218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"163\">One event, during early second stage flight is yet to be clarified, and may be removed as an item of interest. The other relates to an event at T+33 seconds, where launch video shows an object that may be related to an area of interest below Endeavour\u2019s left OMS Pod.<\/p>\n<p>Engineers initially believed they had spotted a what appears to be a missing strip of thermal blanket \u2013 measuring 4 inches wide (height) by 12 to 18 inches (long). This area has no primary thermal heating concerns of note for re-entry, though managers decided to ask the crew to take a closer look during the OBSS scans.<\/p>\n<p>Imagery gained via the short focused inspection by the OBSS is proving to be inconclusive at this stage, though the current thought is the T+33 event is the strip of blanket liberating from Endeavour.<\/p>\n<p>As with every mission since Return To Flight, ascent imagery, radar, and onboard cameras provide the opening salvo of data for engineers to check over. This is required to gain an insight into ET-129\u2019s performance during ascent, including the pinpointing of where any observed foam liberation shed from the tank. The whole process \u2013 carried out by the Damage Assessment Team (DAT) \u2013&nbsp;can take up to five days.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7970\" style=\"black 5px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/a36.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"180\">Flight Day 3\u2019s RPM \u2013 Rbar denoting along the radius vector of the ISS, downward \u2013 allows the ISS crew to perform a high resolution photo survey of the lower surface thermal protection system (TPS) tiles to screen for ascent debris damage.<\/p>\n<p>The nine minute maneuver \u2013 which sees the orbiter commanded through a 360 degree back-flip \u2013 was debuted on STS-114\u2019s Return To Flight mission, following months of planning by shuttle experts at the Johnson Space Center (JSC).<\/p>\n<p>They were tasked with the limitations on crew and sensor visibility, maneuvers conducted about an unstable orbital stationkeeping position, inherently unstable attitude dynamics, thruster plume impingement on the ISS, shuttle propellant limitations, and a very tight set of lighting and geometry constraints for the inspection photography.<\/p>\n<p>That photography will be downloaded to engineers on the ground, who will carry out what is now a well rehearsed exercise of checking through all areas of Endeavour\u2019s TPS for any areas of concern.<\/p>\n<p>Once the RPM is complete, Endeavour will move on to the next milestone, which will result in docking with the ISS around 4pm Central time.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, an anomaly with Endeavour\u2019s KU Band Antenna electronics may come into play during Flight Day 3. The Antenna is suffering issues when in GPC acquisition mode, which prompted controllers to call for the use of the alternative mode of GPC designate. Should the radar be affected, Endeavour will utilize the star tracker.<\/p>\n<p>There are certain limitations via this alternative option, as the star tracker only provides angle data, whereas the radar provides range and range rate (known as rdot) as well as angles.<\/p>\n<p>Crews are trained for such scenarios, where they will be required to monitor the system more closely than usual. This is due to the star tracker being an optical device, which will see the ISS as a \u201cstar\u201d as the two vehicles close in on each other. That in itself will give Endeavour the required point \u2013 or vector \u2013&nbsp;of reference.<\/p>\n<p>However, the main concern is that a celestial object (i.e. star, planet, etc) would pass through the field of view near the station and cause the star tracker to lock onto the star instead of ISS.<\/p>\n<p>It is not yet clear if the radar won\u2019t work as advertised, with confidence rising that the electronics issue with the KU Band Antenna system won\u2019t prove to be related to the radar, following self test diagnostics that were sent up by controllers on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Should the KU malfunction only relate to angle tracking, the crew could use radar range and rdot data simultaneously with star tracker angles.<\/p>\n<p>The specific cause of the problem is under investigation, but it might be related \u2013 with respect to KU to S-Band handover \u2013 to the debuting of the latest software load on Endeavour \u2013 OI-33 (Operational Increment number 33)<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the issue has no mission impact, as managers finalize plans to extend STS-126 by one additional docked day, based on encouraging data on Endeavour\u2019s consumables.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Endeavour continues to close the distance between herself and the International Space Station (ISS),&nbsp;as Flight Day 2 activities \u2013 focusing mainly on the Orbiter Boom Sensor System (OBSS) scans of the orbiter\u2019s Thermal Protection System (TPS) \u2013 have been concluded.
