{"id":41280,"date":"2008-10-27T19:01:09","date_gmt":"2008-10-27T11:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp-productionenv-bjg9h2g2bgg5b8aa.southeastasia-01.azurewebsites.net\/news\/another-emu-glove-modification-to-debut-on-sts-126\/"},"modified":"2008-10-27T19:01:09","modified_gmt":"2008-10-27T11:01:09","slug":"another-emu-glove-modification-to-debut-on-sts-126","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starpath.global\/news\/another-emu-glove-modification-to-debut-on-sts-126\/","title":{"rendered":"Another EMU glove modification to debut on STS-126"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since a small amount of damage was observed on Robert \u2018Beamer\u2019 Curbeam\u2019s EMU gloves during post flight checks after STS-116, NASA engineers have been creating ingenious modifications to improve the safety of their spacewalkers \u2013 the latest of which will debut on STS-126.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Endeavour\u2019s mission next month will focus heavily on EVA work on the troublesome starboard SARJ (Solar Alpha Rotary Joint) \u2013 which will be reviewed in an article later this week.<\/p>\n<p>The modification process resulted in the \u201cGlove TMG (Thermal and Micrometeoroid Garment) Protective Patches\u201d \u2013 which took over from the opening protective solution of the Overglove. The TMG Glove gave added protection against cuts, without restricting dexterity of the spacewalker during complex tasks, as seen in a major update to the gloves ahead of STS-124.<\/p>\n<p>This TMG modification has been improved once again for STS-126, with a special additional patch of \u201cTurtleskin\u201d being included in the glove design \u2013 as overviewed in the EVA Flight Readiness Review (FRR) presentation for STS-126 (All 16 SSP FRR presentations available on L2).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7792\" style=\"black 5px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/a218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"152\">\u201cSTS-126 Prime Flight Gloves will be the first flight of the redesigned Glove TMGs,\u201d noted the presentation. \u201c(This will) improve cut resistance of the TMG (via) a Turtleskin reinforcement layer (which has been) sandwiched between molded palm and RTV (coating) on thumb and index finger, and the implementation of new RTV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurtleskin fabric provides additional cut resistance in high wear areas. (New) RTV exhibits greater peel adhesion than (previous) RTV. Turtleskin patches are bonded and stitched to the molded palm prior to application of RTV pads. STS-126 CMs Piper and Bowen have been training in redesigned TMGs since May. STS-126 CM Kimbrough since mid-August,\u201d added the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTest Experience: Design verification testing conducted at ILC Dover (Completed 34 equivalent EVAs of cycling). Testing included manned cycling, TMG installation\/removal cycles and periodic inspections (after every 3.5 EVAs of cycling).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsed same Phase VI tool board and protocol used in initial Phase VI Glove Certification testing. Overall condition of the TMG was very good with minor peeling at base of thumb and only minor wear noted in other areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As seen in a special PRCB (Program Requirements Control Board) presentation last week, the precautions against cut EMU gloves are of paramount importance to NASA, even after several issue-free missions.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest concern relates to the potential of a spacewalker inadvertently cutting his\/her glove on a sharp edge during an EVA \u2013 a risk when the area has not been previously documented.<\/p>\n<p>Such a scenario \u2013 known as \u201cCause C\u201d (Sharp Edge Exposure) \u2013 is a real risk due to possibility of a MMOD (micrometeoroid\/orbiting debris) strike on the International Space Station (ISS) that results in \u2013 for example \u2013 a handrail becoming damaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPost STS-116 inspection of the EMU gloves revealed delamination of the RTV and cut in the underlying vectran weave. Since STS-116 there have been three more instances cuts to the EMU gloves, one resulting in EVA termination (STS-117 EVA-3),\u201d noted the PRCB presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since, the documented risk to a spacewalker has been classed as \u201cInfrequent\/Catastrophic\u201d \u2013 but thanks to the latest modification, the presentation confirms this risk has now been officially reduced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with the inspections and termination criteria, the phase VI glove have been hardened against sharp edges with the application of Turtleskin patches in the areas of concern (Glove Patch \u2013 First flight STS-124. Redesigned TMG \u2013 First Flight STS-126.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the transition of Safety paper from the Shuttle program to the ISS program Hazard Report was updated to take credit for the Glove Patch and the Redesigned TMG.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the additional controls the Risk was reduced from Infrequent\/Catastrophic to Remote\/Catastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7793\" style=\"black 5px solid;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/a34-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/a34-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nasaspaceflight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/a34.jpg 323w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\">As part of the extensive test process to be able to reduce the risk, engineers simulated MMOD damage to ISS hardware on the ground at the White Sands Test Facility, with the objective to see how much abuse the new gloves would need to suffer against a cut handrail before they became damaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObjective: Evaluate and compare damage created by simulated MMOD hits on handrails to knit Vectran and Turtleskin. WSTF shot handrails with hypervelocity particles simulating on orbit impacts,\u201d noted the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnit Vectran and Turtleskin were exposed to the MMOD strikes in a pressurized suited event attempting to induce glove damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the purpose to actually damage to the glove, the key results showed that damage could only be caused when the glove was used \u201cout of family\u201d from what is expected on orbit \u2013 meaning the spacewalker would remain safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhase VI Glove Knit Vectran (Molded Palm) Results: Subject was not able to cut the Vectran with slow high force gripping motions. Subject cut Vectran using a quick sliding motion across the MMOD impact site while pushing into the handrail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurtleSkin Patch Results: Attempted to cut the TurtleSkin using the same motion that cut the knit Vectran. One attempt broke off a large burr that caused a small cut in the knit Vectran. No damage beyond surface abrasion and RTV loss (after 10 attempts on each glove).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContinued to cycle the same area of the TurtleSkin against MMOD hits. The left thumb patch showed only abrasion damage and RTV loss after 50 cycles. After 50 cycles an abrasion hole was created on the right thumb patch.
