Flight Rules, EVA, Pad and Launch Radar Presentations \u2013 huge section already, heading into FRR season.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**STS-119 Processing Latest**<\/em> \u2014 <em>**STS-119 News Articles**<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**LIVE updates: Endeavour\u00c2&nbsp;Dual LON and STS-126 Processing**<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**LIVE updates on Atlantis\u00c2&nbsp;STS-125 Processing Flow**<\/em> \u2014 <em>**STS-125 News Articles**<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>STS-125 EMU Glove\u00c2&nbsp;Plan:<\/p>\n<p>Cut gloves became a topic of interest since STS-116, after damage was seen on Robert \u2018Beamer\u2019 Curbeam\u2019s EMU (Extravehicular Mobility Unit) gloves during post-landing checks.<\/p>\n<p>The danger was then highlighted by STS-118 spacewalker Rick Mastracchio, who was sent back to the Quest airlock after a cut was observed in his glove during the mission\u2019s EVA-3.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the two incidents, engineers were tasked with designing extra protection into the glove, along with regular glove checks, which are now commonplace\u00c2&nbsp;during all\u00c2&nbsp;spacewalks.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate solution brought in was the \u201coverglove\u201d \u2013 debuting on STS-120, and modified again for STS-122 \u2013 which more than served its purpose in protecting astronauts carrying out assembly work on the outside of the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p>However, the overglove reduced some of the previous dexterity that EVAers enjoyed, meaning several elements of spacewalks had to be carried out with the removal of the additional protective layer.<\/p>\n<p>As always, engineers went about finding a middle ground solution, designing a new modification to the EMU gloves, one which added protection in the key risk areas of the glove, whilst allowing the spacewalker to have most \u2013 but not all \u2013 of the dexterity he required.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the \u2018Glove TMG (Thermal and Micrometeoroid Garment) Protective Patches\u2019 \u2013 or the Modified\/Turtle Skin glove \u2013 the modification made its debut during STS-124, as was deemed as a complete success by Ron Garan and Mike Fossum.<\/p>\n<p>The modification to the glove comes in the form of Turtleskin patches, sewn into the thumb and index finger regions \u2013 which are most at risk of suffering from cuts.<\/p>\n<p>For STS-125, the unique tasks \u2013 compared to ISS missions \u2013 involved means full dexteritiy is required on some of the jobs carried out on the aging telescope, especially during EVA-3.<\/p>\n<p>A presentation titled \u201cSTS-125 EVA Glove Plan\u201d outlined the need to return to a non-modified EMU glove \u2013 even without the overglove \u2013 for at least one large role during EVA-3, and possibly EVA-4.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4113.0;attach=95465;image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"327\" height=\"241\" align=\"left\">\u201cPlanned usage of Modified\/Turtle Skin EMU gloves for all EVAs with the following exceptions: EVA-3: In support of ACS (Advanced Camera for Surveys) Task, EV1 (John Grunsfeld) will wear non-modified gloves (and no overgloves) to accomplish repair,\u201d outlined the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComplex task requires maximum dexterity\/tactile feeling in\u00c2&nbsp;poor visibility and lighting\u00c2&nbsp;\u2013 and the\u00c2&nbsp;releasing and capturing a large amount of non-captive fasteners (36 fasteners).<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Grunsfeld will be using manual screwdriver to \u2018feel\u2019 initial release of fasteners in order not to strip them. Fine alignment required to not damage hardware\/tools. Interfacing with several 1\/4 turn fasteners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEVA-4: Currently EV3 (Mike Massimino) has planned to wear Modified\/Turtle Skin gloves for the STIS (Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph) repair task.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn EVA 2, EV3 will determine if the Modified glove will provide the required dexterity\/tactile feeling to support the STIS repair task. STIS Complex task (117 fasteners) comparable to ACS repair.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4113.0;attach=95466;image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" width=\"229\" height=\"167\" align=\"left\">\u201cIf EV3 feels that the modified gloves will hinder the STIS repair efforts, he will switch to the non-modified gloves (no Overgloves) on EVA 4 to increase the probability of a successful STIS repair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This plan is part of STS-125\u2019s EVA Flight Readiness Review (FRR) due to the exceptions it holds in the current \u201cOverglove Use Policy During US EVA\u201d outlines, which\u00c2&nbsp;were brought in post-STS-118 as part of the risk mitigation effort.<\/p>\n<p>However, exceptions have been identified for this mission, as the crew will always be in the worksite of Atlantis\u2019 cargo bay, along with all hardware \u2013 bar Hubble \u2013 being classed as new -\u00c2&nbsp;thus holding less risk of being damaged by MMOD (Micrometeoroid\/Orbiting Debris), which is a primary cause of cut gloves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnown sharp edges on HST Hardware clearly identified and warnings included in EVA procedures. Only 14 percent of EVA (5) time on exterior of telescope. Only 2.5 percent of EVA (5) time on HST Handrails (MMOD),\u201d added the exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStandard glove inspections during EVA and post EVA. If unexpected damage occurred, the location\/cause could be quickly identified and that marked as a Warning\/KOZ. Due to task locations, most of worksites on HST are never revisited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNon-modified glove usage plan will be re-visited if continued unexpected damage is identified on Modified\/Turtle Skin gloves that would put non-modified gloves\/crew at risk. Very High confidence that this won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be the case based on past HST history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five EVAs will be carried out on this mission, involving four spacewalkers \u2013 out of which only Grunsfeld is currently set to carry out tasks with the old design to the EMU gloves:<\/p>\n<p>EVA 1: Grunsfeld (EV1) \u2013 Modified\/Turtle Skin, Andrew Feustel (EV2) \u2013 Modified\/Turtle Skin. EVA 2: Massimino (EV3) \u2013 Modified\/Turtle Skin, Michael Good (EV4) \u2013 Modified\/Turtle Skin. EVA 3: Grunsfeld (EV1) \u2013 Un-Modified (No-Overgloves), Feustel (EV2) \u2013 Modified\/Turtle Skin.<\/p>\n<p>EVA 4: Massimino (EV3) \u2013 Modified Turtle Skin (To be determined during EVA 2), Good (EV4) \u2013 Modified\/Turtle Skin.
