First was a skip of 12 feet in length followed by a stamp 19 feet long, then second skip was 73 feet long, followed by 544 foot long stamp which was only about two inches wide,\u2019 noted the engineering landing report.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018One interesting observation was that the initial skids were nearly on top of the STS-123 skid-marks.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Everything about Discovery\u2019s landing was \u2018in family\u2019 \u2013 which has proved to be encouraging due to a number of \u2018first flight\u2019 items relating to the Main Landing Gear (MLG). <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Some minor condensation was noted on both MLG struts, typical for amount of humidity on the day,\u2019 added the expansive report. \u2018A minor amount of Carbon Brake dust was noted on all four MLG wheel rims, seemed less than typical.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018NLG (Nose Landing Gear) tire wear was nominal, some minor ozone cracking noted \u2013 typical. STS-124 was the first flight for this pair of NLG tires. First flight of Discovery following MLG strut seal R&amp;R back in December 2007. No hydraulic fluid leaks noted on either MLG strut.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018All brakes looked good with clearance between brake pucks and pressure plates visually verified. All three Ground Lock safety pins were correctly installed. All Spring Bungees fired; NLG strut-assist pyro fired; All gear and door uplock hooks found in nominal released position.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Other work taking place this week on Discovery involves the de-configuration of the orbiter\u2019s mid-body and the opening of her payload bay doors \u2013 the latter aiding checks on her four radiator retract hoses.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Radiator flexhose inspections\/photos are completed with the exception of the port aft hose,\u2019 noted processing information. \u2018The remaining flexhose will be inspected during payload bay door ops.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Orbiter power systems validation is complete less phase angle and frequency counter checks, which will be rescheduled. Flight crew equipment destow continuing. TPS postflight inspections OMS\/RCS thruster inspections continue all week. Window inspections continue through Wednesday.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"141\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1170.0;attach=77638;image\" width=\"233\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\">An item of interest during STS-124 was&nbsp;the failure of the secondary controller on the left TVC (Thrust Vector Control) OMS (Orbital Maneuvering System) engine during ascent. <\/p>\n<p>This is being investigated in Discovery\u2019s OPF, though no issue has yet been found with the controller that strangely started to work again 90 seconds ahead of landing. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018OMS TVC measurement that was lost on ascent came back just before touchdown,\u2019 noted JSC\u2019s Orbiter Project. \u2018Troubleshooting on the left OMS engine did not reveal any issues. Engineering is evaluating further troubleshooting.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Praise has been noted for the engineering team that worked on the faulty MDM (Multiplexer\/Demultiplexer) card (FA2), which was responsible for causing an off-nominal 2-1-1 spilt of Discovery\u2019s General Purpose Computers (GPCs) during her pad flow.<\/p>\n<p>The card was removed from Discovery, with subsequent re-testing clearing the orbiter to launch on schedule. However, as per typical for how engineers deal with problems, the issue was fully investigated.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Prior to STS-124 had an FA2 MDM failure. Localized it to S-Mia card. Depot Team determined had a bad diode already on S-Mia. Looks like a random avionics failure and not anything fleet-wide,\u2019 added JSC\u2019s Orbiter Project. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Great job by team reaching resolution so quickly. Sometimes it takes many months to find a failure on an avionics component.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Discovery will continue post-flight processing for some time, with SSME removal on June 25, prior to heading into a long flow towards her February launch date for STS-119.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u>  <\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Atlantis\/STS-125:<\/p>\n<p>Atlantis\u2019 flow towards the flagship STS-125 mission continues to be well within the timeline. Most of the work being conducted on the orbiter relates to critical path work on her TPS and the leak checks on her three newly installed SSMEs. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Majority of critical path work is TPS. TPS on nose landing gear is configured. Doing mechanical checks to ensure everything is aligned,\u2019 noted KSC Ground Operations. \u2018On ET doors, thermal barriers are being installed and fit checks are in work. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018This leads to landing gear and ET door functionals in a couple of weeks. Are in good shape there. Have 23 TPS cavities bonded and 168 cavities total.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"170\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3993.0;attach=78738;image\" width=\"239\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\"><em><font color=\"#0033ff\">**New L2 Trailer Video, with examples of L2 content&nbsp;\u2013 <\/font><font color=\"#ff0000\">TRAILER NOW AVAILABLE \u2013 CLICK IMAGE**<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018All three SSMEs have been installed \u2013 conducting leak checks. SSME electrical panel installation, bond checks, and electrical mates were completed Monday,\u2019 added NTD processing information.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018GO2\/LH2 leaks checks passed. LO2 leak found on access port of SSME 1; seal will be changed out on a local PR (Problem Report) and retested. SSME connector mates complete on SSME 1 and 2. SSME\/MPS (Main Propulsion System) integrated testing taking place.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>STS-125\u2019s set of boosters are also undergoing final checks and closeouts, following the completion of stacking in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) earlier in the month.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Endeavour\/STS-126:<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>TPS is the main focus of attention with Endeavour, as she\u2019s processed in parallel with Atlantis for LON support (STS-400) \u2013 ahead of her primary mission, STS-126. <\/p>\n<p>Stood down from an emergency timeline to support STS-124 \u2013 following Discovery\u2019s heatshield clearance on orbit last week \u2013 Endeavour recently underwent a successful removal and replacement of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU 3). This will require a hot fire test on the pad.<\/p>\n<p>Her flow timeline remains well within the requirements for supporting LON support of Atlantis, with TPS work progressing to 90 cavities remaining for repair, out of an initial post STS-123 total of 125 cavities \u2013 a low count following her \u2018clean\u2019 flight earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>This week has seen Endeavour\u2019s main landing gear struts extended and pressurized, which saw the nose and main landing gears repositioned \u2013&nbsp;as required to support TPS work.<\/p>\n<p>Comm system audio\/video interface testing has been completed successfully, while standard mixed cargo harness (SMCH) reconfiguration continues all week in the midbody. Rudder\/speedbrake block seal R&amp;R has been rescheduled for later this week.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"118\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=39119\" width=\"183\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\">The radiator retract hoses gain a mention again via Endeavour\u2019s flow, this time relating to a starboard aft hose \u2013 one of four freon-carrying hoses located in the orbiters \u2013 which has suffered some damage. At present, it appears the hose will still be ok for one more flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Had an OPO (Orbiter Project Office) Tech Tag-up last week to review radiator retract hose on OV-105,\u2019 added the latest Shuttle Stand-up\/Integration report. \u2018This is the starboard aft hose that had damage which is more excessive than seen in past. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Have good stress analysis for one flight relative to this hose. Will do couple of payload bay door cycles. Working with Ground Ops team to ensure not doing more damage to hose. Have good stress analysis to fly as is with current level of damage. Will work to end of flow and probably won\u2019t R&amp;R the hose.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A highlight of Endeavour\u2019s near-term flow will be the installation of her three SSMEs at the end of the month, meaning a total of nine engines will have been involved in various orbiter operations during the month of June.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018On OV-105, will do engine installation on June 30. The three engines are in engine shop,\u2019 noted Pratt &amp; Whitney Rocketdyne\/KSC. \u2018On Engine 2047, finished big can leak check, which was good. Are in final walk downs from this. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Engine 2052 is ready to be installed. Engine 2054 is into pre-installation walk downs and liquid air insulation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Build-up work of Endeavour\u2019s booster segments has been ongoing for some time now, and remains on schedule for stacking operations to begin on July 14 \u2013 as per KSC Milestone Chart timelines for Endeavour.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, four External Tanks are in the depth of production at the Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans, with a specific report on their delivery status to follow this week. This will include an update on a mitigation plan to keep STS-125 on track for October, which has proven to be a resounding success.<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u><br \/>Pad Latest:<\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Ironically, it was the problems relating to ET-127 (STS-125) and ET-129 (LON\/STS-400\/STS-126) that originally delayed the launch date to Atlantis\u2019 trip to service Hubble. However, that delay would have occurred anyway, given the damage sustained by Pad 39A during Discovery\u2019s launch on STS-124.<\/p>\n<p>A huge engineering effort is still ongoing with both pads \u2013 firstly to decide on a forward plan to repair Pad A, while engineers&nbsp;also check for voids in Pad B\u2019s flame trench. <\/p>\n<p>A full overview of the investigation into the damage \u2013 and a decision on a repair plan \u2013 is set to move forward to an upcoming PRCB (Program Requirements Control Board) meeting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"156\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3993.0;attach=83945;image\" width=\"216\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\">\u2018Flame trench evaluation and mitigation work continues at both pads: Pull tests to evaluate the epoxy bond between the brick and the concrete wall pick up Tuesday. Tap testing is complete at Pad A but continues at Pad B,\u2019 noted NTD status.<\/p>\n<p>The next key event in the investigation will occur on Wednesday, when an Engineering Review Board (ERB) will meet to collate recommendations for the key PRCB meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018On pad brick activity, asbestos cleanup is still in work. Pad A has been completely mapped with tap test to determine any additional weak points. Pad B mapping is still in work,\u2019 noted their latest status. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Still working NDE (Non-Destructive Evaluation) options to compare with tap test to determine if can come up with something that is reliable. Chemical analysis of brick is in work. Core drilling was completed this weekend. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018This puts them in configuration to begin pull tests on areas they think are weak. Design options and analysis is in work. Worst-case reference drawing has been completed on one of the options. Plan is to have the option of choice down-selected by Friday.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Confidence remains high that Pad A can be repaired in time for Atlantis\u2019 rollout ahead of STS-125, though there is an element of concern about the status of Pad B\u2019s flame trench walls.
