A second opportunity was available, which would have resulted with wheels on the ground at 12:50pm.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Refer to LIVE UPDATE PAGES&nbsp;for minute-by-minute coverage)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Discovery \u2013 coming to the end of a two week mission \u2013 did not need to land on Saturday, with opportunities also available on Sunday and Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Had controllers decided to wave off Saturday\u2019s two attempts, Edwards Air Force Base will be added as a landing option. If the Californian option had been taken, Discovery would land on the shorter temporary runway 22 \u2013 as first noted by this site in April.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of her re-entry, the crew closed&nbsp;Discovery\u2019s payload bay doors \u2013 which were observed closely, following a fleet wide issue with the radiator retract hoses \u2013 that transport freon coolant to the orbiter\u2019s radiators on orbit \u2013 suffering from C-bend\/Omega-bend issues both at the pad and in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Crew procedure incorporated into Deorbit Prep checklist to capture imagery of all four Freon radiator hoses during payload bay door closure,\u2019 noted one Flight Readiness Review presentation ahead of the mission. \u2018Per Shuttle Program, this is a highly desired requirement.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Had one of the four hoses suffer from a bend, a plan was already in place to isolate the hose in question. This would have protected against any leakage of the freon, and allow Discovery to target a nominal re-entry plan.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hose related news content from initial issues during STS-122: <\/em><em>*Issue found\/fleet to be checked (December)*<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u2013 <\/em><em>*Atlantis found to have problem*<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u2013 <\/em><em>*Managers discuss forward plan*<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u2013 <\/em><em>*Use of pole to aid retract*<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<\/em><em>*Successful Retraction*<\/em><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In what in believed to be a record low, Discovery\u2019s mission only generated nine issues worthy of note by the Mission Evaluation Room (MER), and some of those issues \u2013 classed as \u2018funnies\u2019 \u2013 related to minor problems such as a microphone on a headset. None of the issues had any mission impacts.<\/p>\n<p>One item on the list gained additional attention, despite its lack of impact to Discovery\u2019s current mission.<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u>Left OMS Controller EOM Plan:<br \/><\/u><\/i><\/b><br \/>That issue \u2013 with the Left OMS Secondary TVC (or gimbal) controller\u2019s \u2018failure to null in both pitch and yaw\u2019 \u2013 saw engineers work scenarios on the ground, for the purpose of additional understanding, in the event of a problematic issue occurring in the future. <\/p>\n<p>The Left OMS engine is currently performing without issue via its working primary controller, and will be used \u2013 as per normal \u2013 in tandem with the Right OMS engine for the deorbit burn. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Use Primary controller to position engine during deorbit burn and entry stow,\u2019 noted one of several presentations on the engine. \u2018No reason to believe the primary will fail \u2013 it is working now and will be on for the remainder of the flight.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"198\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1785.0;attach=82787;image\" width=\"262\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\">However, the opportunity to work scenarios \u2013 where failed controller gimballed the engine bell\/nozzle to the extreme position of \u2018actuator hard stop\u2019 \u2013 leaving part of the bell exposed to some of the aeroheating of re-entry \u2013 was taken by engineers, mainly in thanks to the lack of any issues with Discovery during her mission. <\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, even in the event of such a scenario, the findings revealed that the Columbium engine bell would still avoid any damage, along with no controllability issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If the engine is in a bad config (scenario): An estimate of aero loads does not indicate controllability issues given the size of the engine bell and the amount it could extend into the airflow (&lt;4 sq ft pitch; &lt;1 sq ft yaw) as compared to the rudder\/speedbrake panels and body flap.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Aeroheating of the Columbium engine bell during entry (498-771 degrees F) is predicted to be well within the temperature range of the material (&lt;1600 degrees F at flange).\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Engineers also evaluated any potential concern relating to a scenario of possible movement of the OMS engine nozzle during re-entry. Again, the engine\u2019s bell would be under no threat of damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018No concerns from Orbiter Entry Aeroheating team due to possible movement of the OMS engine nozzle into the flow during re-entry,\u2019 added one presentation. \u2018Orbiter entry orientation (40 deg angle of attack) shields leeside components from high heating. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018OMS pod nozzle is further shielded by OMS pod from incoming flow potential protuberance heating caused by nozzle worst-case orientation will be negligible due to thick boundary layer and leeside flow behavior.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the worst case scenario for the OMS engine bell \u2013 if slightly exposed via a large scale controller issue \u2013 would be via the high velocity airstream the orbiter enters during her return, with the potential that the exposed edge of the bell could buckle. <\/p>\n<p>Even then, the orbiter flight\u2019s would not be compromised, with the only requirement being its replacement, once she was back in her Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF). <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"170\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3993.0;attach=78738;image\" width=\"239\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\"><em><font color=\"#0033ff\">**New L2 Trailer Video, with examples of L2 content&nbsp;\u2013 <\/font><font color=\"#ff0000\">TRAILER NOW AVAILABLE \u2013 CLICK IMAGE**<\/font>. <font color=\"#0000ff\"><em>**Includes FIVE&nbsp;Stunning high quality&nbsp;2hr, 355-400mb Camcorder and HUD videos, with&nbsp;crew&nbsp;audio&nbsp;\u2013 from payload bay closure \u2013 through re-entry with an&nbsp;astronaut held camcorder video \u2013&nbsp;to post landing \u2013 several more videos showing landing from 90,000 ft also available and HUD videos from STA landings.<\/em><\/font><\/em><\/p>\n<p>At present, the plan for Discovery once she lands relates to the post-landing checklist. The OMS engines will remain in their landing configuration until she arrives for post flight deservicing in the OPF, where engineers will work on the root cause of the secondary controller failure. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Post-landing ops are minimal: OMS Enables are inhibited at OPS 9 transition; zero position measurement may generate an error during SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engines) Rain Drain repositioning, but will not affect operation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018No OMS motion is planned until the orbiter gets to the OPF except for a possible ferry flight.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><b><i><u>Discovery\u2019s Next Mission \u2013 STS-119:<\/u><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Once Discovery arrives back in her OPF, she will be processed for STS-119, currently scheduled in milestone charts for February 12, 2009. <\/p>\n<p>That mission will see her deliver the fourth and final starboard Integrated Truss Segment (S6), with the fourth set of solar arrays and batteries to the International Space Station. A crew rotation on Expedition 18 will also be carried out, with Sandra Magnus replaced by STS-119\u2019s Koichi Wakata.<\/p>\n<p>An expansive baseline presentation on the mission, available to download in L2, includes documentation on the deferred Boundary Layer Transition (BLT) experiment that was originally scheduled for STS-126, plus a special Thrust Oscillation test \u2013 designed to provide valuable launch vibration data for Ares I, added to Discovery\u2019s next mission.<\/p>\n<p>During her processing flow, Discovery will receive an upgrade to the Inertia Reels on the crew\u2019s launch and entry seats, along with three additional hardware modifications, which are currently in the process of review by shuttle managers.<\/p>\n<p>They include WLE (Wing Leading Edge) Spar \u2018Sneak Flow\u2019 Protection (on) Right Hand panels 1-4, Left Hand panels 2-4; Lower WLE CP Horse Collar Gap Filler Redesign (on) RH 1-4, LH 2-4; and Connector Saver Redesign (on) LH OMS Pod and Ku Band (antenna).<\/p>\n<p>STS-119 will be Discovery\u2019s 36th flight, still well short of the halfway point of her design life.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\"><em>L2 members<\/em><\/font><em>: All documentation&nbsp;\u2013 from which the above article has quoted snippets \u2013 is available in full in the related L2 sections, updated live.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Click here for a range of superb&nbsp;STS mission specific music videos created by Max Q videos&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Veteran orbiter Discovery and her crew of seven have returned to Earth on the first opportunity, landing successfully at the Kennedy Space Center for a nominal EOM (End Of Mission) for STS-124.
