Wing glove and crew cabin portions of survey will be performed (usually FD2 only),\u2019 noted documentation associated with the OBSS plan. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Crew requested that the post-undock surveys not be referred to as Late Inspection to avoid inadvertently performing callouts to skip steps for \u2018Late\u2019 inspection.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The OBSS helped&nbsp;double check an area of the RCC panels on her Wing Leading Edge, which avoided the usual \u2018full scan\u2019 via Flight Day 2 and 3\u2019s inspections via the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) and RPM.<\/p>\n<p>The scans from the RCC panels were the first set of results that went under the evaluations of the Damage Assessment Team (DAT). <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"176\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4537.0;attach=80483;image\" width=\"227\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\">In addition to Late Inspection procedures, an extra flight day has been added to the mission timeline to provide enough time to analyze the OBSS data, which started to undergo the major process of evauation shortly after the end of the scans on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Damage Assessment Team requires 34 hours from the start of the inspection to \u2018clear\u2019 the Shuttle for landing,\u2019 noted documentation. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018This is longer than the standard 26 hours required for late inspection analysis because a full inspection was not completed earlier in the mission. An additional post undocked day is required for analysis and to allow adequate reaction time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Shuttle managers expect to gain the final results of the OBSS scans ahead of Thursday\u2019s Mission Management Team (MMT) meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Those results are already positive, with a Flight Day 13 presentation showing Discovery has passed through the evaluations on the critical areas of her TPS with flying colors.<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018TPS Late Inspection Coverage: TPS is Clear for Re-entry,\u2019 noted documentation on Thursday (available in L2). \u2018TPS Community has assessed the small area of upper carrier panel that was missed. Inspection imagery shows that all tiles are installed and no large damages exist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Similar coverage of upper LESS (<!--StartFragment -->Leading Edge Structure Subsystem)&nbsp;carrier panels as previous flights\u2019<\/p>\n<p><\/font> <\/p>\n<p>The OBSS has now been stowed for re-entry on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The relaxed nature of the crew during the OBSS scans was apparent, when clips of video taken onboard Discovery during the Late Inspections showed one of the crew playing a game of \u2018peek-a-boo\u2019 with the OBSS cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018How you doing?\u2019 was heard in the short clip, as the astronaut impersonated Joey from the sitcom Friends, as the OBSS camera peered into the crew cabin, followed by \u2018I can see you!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The purpose of any mission is to get a cool crew video,\u2019 CAPCOM could be heard saying in response to the short clips, \u2018and I think you\u2019ve done very well on that!\u2019<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><u><em>Discovery undocking:<br \/><\/em><\/u><br \/>Discovery\u2019s undocking was&nbsp;followed by a stunning flyaround of the growing facility. .<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018midnight\u2019 undocking of Discovery was timed to ensure good lighting for the subsequent flyaround. Discovery was ending a docked stage of over eight days and 17 hours.<\/p>\n<p>While the one lap flyaround of the ISS is always&nbsp;stunning, it aides engineers on the ground with a 360 degrees-worth of imagery of the Station. However, with the newly added Kibo module, the growth of the Station is visually impressive.<\/p>\n<p><em>(See Live Coverage Pages, linked above, for a hundreds of screenshots from the undocking and flyaround).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"170\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3993.0;attach=78738;image\" width=\"239\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\"><em><font color=\"#0033ff\">**New L2 Trailer Video, with examples of L2 content&nbsp;\u2013 <\/font><font color=\"#ff0000\">TRAILER NOW AVAILABLE \u2013 CLICK IMAGE**<\/font>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following the flyaround&nbsp;\u2013 which was ably carried out by&nbsp;pilot Kenn Ham, who used less prop for the 360 degree lap of the ISS than controllers on the ground had expected \u2013&nbsp;Discovery fired&nbsp;her Reaction Control System (RCS) for the first separation burn.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery is returning Garrett&nbsp;<!--StartFragment -->Reisman from his stay onboard the ISS, leaving former STS-124 crewmember Greg&nbsp;<!--StartFragment -->Chamitoff as his replacement.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment -->\u2018Discovery departing after a successful mission, leaving behind great hope, Kibo,\u2019 said Chamitoff over the loop as Discovery left the Station.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The whole mission was very successful, we\u2019re sad to see you go, but we\u2019ve got great pictures, and we\u2019ll see you on the ground!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Issues with the vehicle remain to be few and far between, with only 11 items on the Mission Evaluation Room (MER) \u2018funny\u2019 report, following the addition of a MPS (Main Propulsion System) LH2 engine 2 pressure transducer shift \u2013 discovered during post-launch data review.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the 11 items on the MER list, none hold any mission impact, and several \u2013 such as a headphone microphone \u2013 are not going to require any further evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Loss of Fuel Cell 3 Cell Performance Monitor (CPM) and H2 flow meter \u2013 the four measurements went off scale low at the same time,\u2019 noted another item on the list. \u2018The work around for the loss of the H2 flow meter is to use the O2 flow meter to monitor purges and to use tank quantities to check for leaks.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Another item also holds no concerns, and will be dealt with once Discovery is back in her \u2018barn\u2019 (Orbiter Processing Facility) next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) 3 Water Line Thermostat Dithering \u2013 no issues in current configuration,\u2019 noted the item list. \u2018Plan is to swap heaters post undocking during heater reconfig.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The crew are enjoying&nbsp;a day off duty on Thursday, ahead of the regular checks being carried on Discovery\u2019s critical systems for re-entry on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery is targeting a landing at the Kennedy Space Center on Saturday, weather permitting.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\"><em>L2 members<\/em><\/font><em>: All documentation&nbsp;\u2013 from which the above article has quoted snippets \u2013 is available in full in the related L2 sections, updated live.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Click here for a range of superb&nbsp;STS mission specific music videos created by Max Q videos&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following evaluations on Discovery\u2019s Thermal Protection System (TPS) via Late Inspection data and imagery, engineers on the ground have presented the Mission Management Team (MMT) with a clean bill of health for the orbiter.
