The Queen took the opportunity on the final leg of the royal tour of the United States.\n<\/p>\n<p>  The event, which was opened by Cambridge native and US astronaut Mike Foale, was conducted at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, involving Suni Williams, Fyodor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kotov of ISS Expedition 15.\n<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"129\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/forum.nasaspaceflight.com\/forums\/get-attachment.asp?action=view&amp;attachmentid=13910\" width=\"600\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"5\" border=\"0\/\"><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>**Huge collection of ISS and Soyuz&nbsp;handbooks and presentations, plus daily On Orbit Status reports&nbsp;and more are&nbsp;<\/em><em><font color=\"#0000ff\">available to download&nbsp;on L2<\/font><\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>**<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Although the Queen did not ask any questions of the ISS crew \u2013 which was unexpected and may have been pre-planned \u2013 Foale set up the ISS crew with set standard questions about the ISS and its role in the future exploration of NASA. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">As the ISS passed over the US and out of video communication with Goddard, the Queen met with NASA\u2019s administrator Mike Griffin and Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA Associate Administrator for Space Operation, who again made a point of speaking about the return to the moon. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Griffin introduced the ISS expeditions as the modern day equivalent of Captain Cook\u2019s crew on board Endeavour. The Queen then asked a few questions of Foale, asking about the duration crew members spend onboard the ISS. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018How many times have you been into space,\u2019 the Queen asked of Foale, who noted his involvement on six flights. \u2018My most recent was as commander of the International Space Station in 2003 to 2004. I spent six months there with one Russian. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018Since then we\u2019ve added one crew member\u2026we saw Suni Williams and she\u2019s been there&nbsp;five months.\u2019 <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018So what sort of length of time, is it basically six months?\u2019 Asked the Queen, inquiring as to how long crewmembers spend on board the ISS. \u2018Typically six months, although it depends on when Shuttles can (rotate) crews,\u2019 Foale noted. \u2018But six months is what we shoot for. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">\u2018You get lonely sometimes, but we have contact with our families, and talk once a day.
